It appears to me the more you harvest Basil, The more you get. :-)
@@tommanley6566 exactly!! One of my favorite things about it
Melissa K. Norris - Modern Homesteading do you basically use potting jars for growing herbs or do you play a garden for some of these plants? Thank you
@@maryholt9805 for basil I usually just grow in containers, sometimes I pair it with my tomatoes. I only do mint in the containers because they spread like crazy. My oregano and thyme are in beds
I just started growing stuff this year by myself after believing for years that I had a brown thumb! I have mint, basil, thyme (3rd year), rosemary, and chives. And I am enjoying every minute of it 😁 Thanks for the pruning tips.
The best way I found to increase volume of herbs is to buy reseeders. Do lots of cuttings and place them in a sunny window. I'm herb rich yall!
Bless you, puppy😘
Great tips to prune and extend harvest season of herbs!
Thank you, Melissa. Good information. 😃
Great filming very good to see where you specifically cut. Happy gardening!
You have gorgeous basil bush. Thanks for informative video!
So helpful and clear❤❤❤❤
Very helpful. Doing this to my basil now
What a good video!! Thank you!!
Looking forward to it, Melissa! I have a ton of basil to harvest, and oregano too, plus sage, thyme and dill.
BOOKMARKED! Thank you so much! About to go harvest some of my beautiful purple sage now.
Thank you! Very helpful!
That’s it! I’m ripping out my herb garden and paving it over. Lol your herbs are beautiful and no burnt tips. The quality organics are evident.👍🏻
Thank you for your clarity and and such a simple, straight forward guide to harvesting/pruning the most used culinary herbs in one concise video!! Very appreciated, thank you!👍❤️
Very helpful video!
Great video, you’d be surprised how many there are where they don’t show you a close up of what they’ve done. Very informative also, keep up the great work.
Hay there from Mn. Great information thank you.
This was great! I have two big post of mint --spearmint and peppermint. And lemon balm. We also really, really, love basil--I think it's my husband's favorite herb. So it's good to know how to grow a lot of it.
Thank you!!

I didn't know to prune my basil. I'll be getting a lot more of it now! Thanks!
@Sandra Julian 🙌 yay!
This information came at the perfect time for me. This is the first year I have grown sage and mint. It is getting pretty big and I knew it was time for harvest but I wasn't sure how to do it. This is also my first year for chives and lemongrass and I'm not sure how to harvest it either. I'm going to have to do some research.
Started batch from the grocery store basil is 3 \4 foot tatt and 2 foot around...sage bloomed 2x this year keeps going. Dehydrated one batch and have been hanging to dry last two picks
If you have more space I would highly recommend giving your herbs bigger pots (or divide the plant(s) into different pots) and more light.
Thanks Melissa, I was actually getting really leggy basil, I didn’t realize it needed to be pruned this way!
So glad you found this tip!
So glad you found this tip!
Loved this video - just like all your videos! I also really LOVE your sweater! Where did you get it? I wish it was sweater/jean weather here in NJ - still pretty warm and muggy!
Thanks @Shannon Mulligan I actually got the shirt (it's more like t-shirt material, not super thick) from Amazon last year, here's the link amzn.to/2NtRf1M *affiliate
Thank you! So many ppl keep grabbing a handful of mint and just chopping through them and I have little plants. 😅
Thanks for the video! Do you ever prune/trim for use from the larger bottom leaves (even just for size control)? Or do you need to stay away from removing lower, mature growth?
Nice 😘👍👍👍
I Loved your viedo and I'm so jealous of your sage I just can't get mine sage to grow well in the hot south it is so beautiful and your mint also I love the basil i'm on my way now to pinch mine a little. Lol
Thank you so much for these videos! I plan on buying land to build a homestead in Washington state where I currently live! I have been trying to inquire as much knowledge and skills has possibly while Impatiently waiting! Your channel has been such a great source of information! I was wondering if you would be able to feed all the herb clippings to chickens or other live stock?
Thanks again!
Yes, extra can go to the chickens, pigs (we don't have pigs currently but will be getting them again this spring) or compost
I have sage, german thyme, basil( but it has grown like a small tree) because I didn't know how to harvest it. oregano, mint. all my plants are in containers. If you would please advise me of these. This video is very informative. Thank you
Please talk about cilantro when the new leaves start growing very thin. Should we cut that off and can it be used?
Rosemary and thyme, oregabo
Looking forward to learning to preserve all this basil with salt! I’m also working on a couple of tinctures, one basil and one mint.
I think you'll love it, it's by far my favorite way for basil and yay for tinctures! I've got to get more alcohol to get more going this week.
Did you see the link for the basil salt?
Melissa K. Norris - Modern Homesteading no
Sorry, no.

Do you do anything different in the fall for overwintering? I didnt end up harvesting much from my sage last year, and some stalks died back over winter, but some did not and now this spring its growing again. I wondered if I should have cut it back before winter, or not. I assume its ok to remove any of the dead stalks at least? I'm in OR, in the valley, zone 8b. This plant has successfully overwintered twice now and grown a lot, but if I can encourage it even more, that would be awesome.
Miss Melissa, Do ramps grow in your part of the country? Great Video as always, From N.C.
@Tilman hensley no, we don't have them here.
Thank you Melissa, it's 2 years on and I still learned something from this. I'm curious, what do you do with your sage? Any favorite recipes (just the name would be good)? We have sage growing well now, but I'm not sure what dishes to use it in, as it wasn't one the herbs my mother used. The only recipe I've tried with sage is Saltimbocca, delicious!
Don’t know if this helps- I love spaghetti simply with sage and a little butter. X
I'm new here, what zone and area are you? It's helpful to know what grows best where. I'm in hot Southern California zone 9a. Some of my herbs (mint, oregano, sage), don't look as good as yours! But I'm progression planting basil and my rosemary is very happy:)
I have a gorgeous sage bush in my garden. I would like to take some of it with me when we move back to Washington. How do I harvest seeds on a sage plant?
What do the runners look like for chocolate mint?? I got some and I think it’s primarily runners honestly. And I’m trying to decide if I should prune them back to let it grow back from the center
My mint has yellow spots on the leaves and I don't know what I am doing wrong need help.

😊Thank you !! This was very helpful information !!
Did you burn your arm in the oven ?
@Anthony Burdine you have a good eye, and yes I did. I've been using my homemade herbal wound salve on it and it's almost gone now, hoping for no scar
@@MelissaKNorris Do you have a video on making your homemade herbal salve ? I'll ask GOD to bless you with quick healing and no scar !!!😊
I am growing sage, mint, basil, rosemary, lavander and moringa.
My sage has a lot of brown spots on some of the leafs, do you knwo what causes that?
Keep up the good work
God bless you
It could be a nutrient deficiency or some bug damage. Sometimes my older leaves get it and I remove them. Are they mainly older leaves?
@@MelissaKNorris
For the most part yes on older leaves. I feed this plant twice a week with an organic water soluble fertilizer, but I have not seen much improvement. I inspect it for bugs and I can't find any, i am afraid the bug may be in the roots. Here in TX e get those ugly root eating bugs 😔
Thanks for replying ☺
@@gvas7560 that is frustrating. I'd try some in pots if possible to see if that makes a difference if these ones are in ground
@@gvas7560 pinch of leaves that are browning.
I noticed the basil goes to flower only when the roots can’t grow anymore. If you put it in a bigger pot or in the ground, it focuses on growing bigger and doesn’t flower
And I live in New Hampshire. Even in the 48 degree nights, only the basil in smaller pots are going to seed. The ones in bigger pots and in the ground are not trying to flower
What is mint good for? medicinal
My basil has started flowering already. Is it ruined? What do i do? Please help
I had to search this after my last few basils instantly regressed after I harvested... Had to buy some from Walmart because I couldnt keep up... I can only make a few dishes per basil plant, and was like, is this really something I need to start from seed over and over or am I doing something wrong here?! I *always* harvest from the bottom, and the sides, usually just ripping the biggest leaves off wherever! LOL.
Removing the leaves individually doesn’t make more leaves 😂
My mint lost all of its leaves and now I need to buy another plant What could I have done to prevent this? I need lots of mint but need to plant in containers because I have deer that will eat my plants in the yard.
May I ask- is the sage in the kitchen the same sage that I can burn in a sage smudge? I would like to make my own sage smudge by hand but nit sure that it’s the same exact species of sage? Thanks in advance.
White sage is used for smudging.
So what happens to the bigger bottom leaves since we’re supposed to harvest from the top?
Good question I was wondering the same thing.
One thing I don't see yet.. please help, it's summer here but I water routinely. I have full-on flower cones on my mint and basil. They are big green and healthy.can I revert them back into growing? Or will I kill them by removing the maturing flower tips?
Removing the flowers should not kill the plants, but the leaves flavour may not be good anymore based on how long the flowers have been on the plant, if the flowers are removed immediately when noticing them start to form then flavour of leaves should still be good. Good luck, worst case scenario just take a cutting of the plant that doesn’t have a flower and propagate it in water, then plant it in soil and then have a new plant.
I can't find the actual video on how to preserve my basil in salt! Help!
@Jennie Arnold It's in the video descriptions (hit see more) but I copied it here for you too My favorite way to preserve basil - How to Preserve Fresh Basil in Salt ruclips.net/video/0gKJ8n2iVZk/видео.html
I want to be part of the class on herbal medicine
Good tips for pruning - however please save some of the herbs' flowers for the pollinators since they need them for food.
She blocks her hand on the video. So irritating
