Die Hard is the adaptation of the book sequel to the detective. The detective was made into a film starring Frank Sinatra. So Die Hard should have taken place in 1979 with frank Sinatra playing the lead role.

Fun fact: the psychiatrist in The Detective, Lloyd Bochner, a then well known Canadian actor, was the father of Hart Bochner, who portrayed the well known and deeply flawed character called Harry Ellis (the one trying to "broker" a "deal between Gruber & McClane). He was cast because of being an acquaintance of producer Joel Silver.
It is said that John McTiernan did not want Bochner to portray Ellis like a bumbling cokehead, but a suave Cary Grant-esque man, and he was upset until he saw Joel Silver & Lawrence Gordon (movie producing powerhouses and fathers, together or separately, to great 80s classics such as Predator, 48 Hrs & Lethal Weapon) having a great time with Bochner's portrayal of Ellis, which is in the end one out of many pieces that together made Die Hard a memorable movie classic.

@@carlosayala5161 I don't would love it if they remade the detective, have it stick more to the book and then do the sequel. And I think the actor who could pull it off should be Russel Crowe.
