I love that this series has shown why Worker has the Swift and the Harrier. I heard a lot lf people calling the Harrier the Swift's replacement. You have shown that it is in fact the newest evolution of a different branch of the tree.
Well, in my opinion, anyway. I can not actually prove that was their intention.
@@CaptainXavier not necessarily their intention, but it shows there is a different reason to use each.
Or it may very well be both depending on where Worker feels the Swift is in its sales lifecycle. The Mk-4 might even give it a boost. Who knows...
I personally feel like worker still supports the Swift and did not mean for the worker harrier to be a replacement, as they still have lots of upgrade parts available for the swift, and the harrier seems a lot more modular and space efficient. The harrier has a smaller plunger tube and a shorter prime, showing how they are not improving the old design, but making a new one for a different niche.
I love how the progression is so simple, yet complicated
The Caliburn also being an evolution to oldschool +bows is an interesting chunk of history too.
I considered including one of those, but I decided a line had to be drawn somewhere, or I would have to put a blast-a-ball in here, and that would be silly.

I really enjoyed this series. As someone who was introduced to this hobby after the majority of the blasters in this series were created, I find it very interesting.
I'm curious if you would consider a deeper dive into some of these individual blasters. Info like designers, where they took inspiration from, what they set out to do, looking back what would they do differently. Obviously, for something like this, you would need a person on the inside to interview. Just brainstorming. Great video!!
My opinion aligns with yours on the r and d. I’ve really enjoyed this series of videos and I think I’ll adopt this terminology for blaster classes. I hope that Worker and DZ continue all 3 DMRs. It’s always great to have options. My gf can’t carry my Mk4 comfortably, so she’s better suited to a medium or light DMR.
It's kinda wild for me, cause when I got into the hobby the caliburn was still rather new and the terminator wasn't introduced until about a year after I got into it, the infinus was my first flywheel blaster and look how far the hobby has come since then, the ceda was brand new and it was a huge deal, and now we have blasters half the price that have twice the performance of the ceda on store shelves, the nexus is almost 3 years old at this point and that shook the hobby and changed everything and now we have the DZP 4.0 that can easily get 300+ from a primary manufacturer with just a spring upgrade when just 5 or 6 years ago 350+ fps was something exclusive to heavily modified blasters like the longshot and early caliburn builds
Quite the informative series. Personally, I'd more than likely stick with either light or medium DMRs, only because I'm not sure I'd ever need more. But if the X-Shot Longshot has shown anything recently, it's that swapping between light, medium, and heavy for some blasters is only a 5 minute (max) job anymore. And I'm curious on where you'd rank the X-Shot Longshot if you decide to purchase one.
I do have one. I would classify it as Medium.
Another one I would add to this evolution is the Longstrike. In its original design, it was a rather underwhelming reverse-plunger blaster, but the later Modulus series re-release of it made many improvements. There were even aftermarket upgrade kits that could make a Longstrike just as powerful as a modded Longshot of the era, but for some reason, the Longstrike was just never quite as popular...
Probably because the grip angle? I wasn't in the hobby at that point, so I have no clue

I'm not an active partcipant in the hobby (more of an oversea spectator), but I've been watching nerf related videos like reviews and discussions both casual and hobbiest, and it's great to have a quick lesson in the history of innovation from the perspective of a person who's been in the hobby. It's quite interesting!
It's interesting to note some of the times when things haven't gone to plan. The Terminator seems like a no-brainer, all the metal internals, offer a new shell to put them in. Yet the shell was a failure. They somehow messed that up, but not the Prophecy. Then with the Swift there were teething issues that needed to be smoothed out with new parts to fix things (the MK4 has copied their homework, but, just that initial release...). Which goes to show just how important all of that R&D is, or trial and error.
It's kinda fascinating to see the companies drawing from hobby stuff. We're seeing another example of that in the X-Shot Longshot, which sits pretty comfortably next to the Lynx in the medium realm. Mainly due to it being incredibly similar to the proto-Lynx, the Taurus. And amongst all of this later development, one name is missing, Nerf, which is kinda funny. Especially as they were the launch point for each category.
I have a great appreciation for what has been accomplished in the hobby.
This series was great, good overview of the history of the hobby. It would be great to see something similar with flywheelers, maybe split between semi-auto and full-auto. They've been following the same pattern, but they're still stuck in the Caliburn stage, where the design has been perfected (via stuff like the Gryphon) but no one has injection-molded it yet.
I agree that it makes way more sense to have designated blasters for various levels of play. Excellent video sir! Bangarang!
These have been awesome videos, Cap! I’d love to see a similar series on flywheelers for those of us who *snooty, posh British voice* appreciate the finer aspects of war ;)
9:15 Just Yesterday (6-25-23) Dart Zone Pro released a blaster that is basically a MK 3.1 and called it the Omnia Pro. So maybe they are changing their ideas on the Mk X.X system. (They also called it both Pro and Max to merge their two High Performance lines.)
I love this series. I have a misunderstanding of dartzone mk 4. I thought that it would compete with something like the trion or the 1.3 (what he called medium DMR) and being kind of dissapointed by it's size and bulk in general. But seeing it alongside the swift and caliburn really shows that it was built for a different class/branch in the hobby.
Perspective matters. :)
Shoutout to the 1995 crossbow mods back before elite to first couple of years ( before i came into the hobby from what i heard)
Fun fact: The hosts of Dart Zone's Blaster Chat podcast, when showcasing the DZP Mk 4, actually name dropped the Caliburn in that episode!
I had to do a double take upon hearing that, and it got me more hyped than it probably should have but I was just thinking like "YOOO, the Caliburn is an absolutely legendary blaster and they know it!!!"
Having just received my MK 4, I think that'll be my heavy going forward, and I think I'll keep my Stryker as the light/medium. Makes sense to me to have different blasters for different roles. I think flywheelers have fallen by the wayside a bit these last few years in the commercial market and the next big step should be trying to optimize those.
Hell yeah the Longshot made it. She is obsolete in tech wise when compared to the current but if she ain’t broken, sometimes don’t need to fix (or be obsessive as me and have over thirty in different configurations and looks lol).
I play at 350fps caps and i sold my swift to get the Harrier and it is hitting just as hard and is just as accurate. Great video.
Ow and also I've hear of swifts breaking using the 1.8 springs so personally i don't think the swift is actually stronger. Thats why monkey mods is selling shells for the swift as people kept breaking them.

The future is anti-aircraft. I'm working an idea and gathering parts that should work together to take down drones etc. It will be modular. You could run it on/off the back of a golf cart, shopping cart, someone's shoulder, a tower, and the list goes on. Of course these will be fly wheelers with lipos. 5 blasters shooting half lengths darts. I need 2 more Herjas and 4 more EZE drums. I got the Tachis to start with (5). I will probably need help figuring out the electros. I want to be able to fire all 5 at once, in pairs, and 1 in singularity in case I get rushed.

Absolutely loving the series. On a side note, i see thats a blasterforge/monkee mods rail for that longshot. Those are discontinued. I have a very special longshot that id love to install one on. Any chance you have an extra you would be willing to part with? Or be willing to part with that longshot?
Why yes that because that Longshot I built personally. That was sent to him as a gift and that rail was the last batch to be sold when I got it. Built that Longshot with colour match in mind.
Did I forget to mention she was built to hit 270fps with worker darts when she was sent in early 2020 iirc

Captain speaking of Picatinny rail do you know of a longshot grip that has Picatinny rail or could I potentially heat form PVC and drill in Picatinny from underneath? Also, sorry for this comparison I have noticed that the chambering of something like the Caliburn and the chambering of something like a model, 1895 Winchester, are the same in terms of both systems, have a rod that pushes the projectile into a barrel that seals it. I’m not trying to step out of line I’m just noticing a comparison.
I have a Caliburn, never got the Swift because of poor reports, but did get a DZ Mk4.0. Might need to up the power as 200 still feels a bit anemic.
I got one of the worker caliburns a few years ago but a screw broke in it sadly, so I couldn’t finish it

I’ll have you know good sir, I have a bachelorette in philosolawyering. How dare you say I’m not qualified to pass judgement on legal ethics of others products.
I don't think that there is a need in this hobby to go too far beyond these blasters... it is cool when somebody can really crank up a project blaster, but exceeding 350fps, we're talking airsoft speeds... and with projectiles that can weigh over a gram our generally safe painless sport becomes something else.
I know I am divergent from a large sector of the hobby, but I think we can continue to push FPS limits, sure... but we really need to bring that "nerf" innovation back, learning to push capacity and capabilities... I am more excited by developments like the OOD Herja, and the new Dart Zone Outlaw... that introduce new ways to experience the hobby rather than yet-another-evolution of the large plunger tube insane FPS pursuit.
Need has nothing to do with it. People like to tinker. Besides, blasters at that level are used in very small, rare, and specific venues, not casual public game.
That is only one small subsection of the hobby. It is a loud one but certainly not the majority. I could do a series on semi-auto blasters, full-auto blasters, shotguns, hopper blasters, etc. Each would also display power creep at the higher ends. 200 FPS, 20 DPS blasters that are almost absurd in their impracticality but fun to see built.
It all comes down to how you play. Casual, HvZ, Competitive, To the Pain, everyone is allowed their preference.

What I was trying to say is that mass produced blasters like the Swift and MK4 greatly expand access to 200+ FPS blasters out of the box... my primary concern has to do with escalation in the hobby, more and more heavy hitters are hitting the market than ever before in much more high profile retailers... I guess I see the potential for the line to eventually blur between casual and hobby level blasters... I guess I am just seeing a doomsday scenario where kids are giving eachother welts and losing eyes in the park or at the beach and suddenly Nerf and Dart Zone are in a congressional hearing like Ninetendo and Sega were in the 90s (Nerf is Nintendo in this case).
where does that giant mega bolt action sniper rifle fall? it doesnt get the FPS of a heavy but it sure has the attitude of one

The install is the same as the 3d printed ones where you chop the carry handle rail off to flush with main rail. That Long was built by me back a longshot while ago in 2020. Best tools is a dremel and a file.

how about something similar in the high performance springer pistols? the gecko, the mk 2, mk 2.1, etc.
I don't have most of them, so not really an option. I am not a big springer pistol guy.

so question, what roles would you say these DMRs (across all levels) be in squads? basically, between light infantry, scout and marksman/sniper, would you say that the level of DMR depends on the role in a squad taken or should all roles just use the heaviest DMR available?
for me personally, i feel like light DMRs and even pistol sized blasters meant to do that like the spamf are perfect for scouts, medium for light infantry for extra punch but better ergos but not as much punch as a heavy specifically for marksmen since they are most likely engaging targets at the highest ranges.
You are over thinking it, my friend. As I said in all three videos, the nomenclature has no real meaning, I just used it for ease of the discussion. I referred to them as "DMR's" because that is easier to say repeatedly than, "magazine fed, pump action, springer." I broke it into Light, Medium, and Heavy to easily break it into 3 shorter videos instead of one super long one. But at the end of the day, they are just magazine fed, pump action, springers. So use them accordingly.

@@jimmusthegrimmace Fair. Just be careful of not falling into the trap of thinking certain blasters can only be used in certain roles or that certain roles require certain blasters. Use whatever works for you.

honestly, i feel like if they go any higher in fps, they wont find a customer base within our hobby for it. Accuracy is the next frontier i think.

You absolutely could make that argument. I considered including one but opted not to because it would have opened up the non-mag fed rabbit hole and consumed us all. So I stuck to mag fed, pump action, springers.
...though now that I ponder it, I assume there were mag fed Pump Snaps? Wouldn't really matter as I don't have one.

@benrogers7935 it is still a mag fed, pump action springer (the primary abitrary features I used to determine if something is a "DMR" in our hobby). Being a bullpup doesn't change that.
But at some point, how much pressure can a dart take?
From my testing, 600 fps is enough to stop a full length dart due to sir resistsnce. Such velocities also rupture Mega darts pretty consistently

@CaptainXavier that's very fair, those things were a true enigma but before the caliburn or the terminator I'd say that was one thing that kicked off the professional grade 3rd party blasters fron xplorer.
