yeah, why not? if they wanted some kind of artificial creek, they should have remodeled the whole area (regrade and then some!). aesthetics is the only reason I can think of to not just run the water through a pipe, and the customer certainly didn't ask for aesthetics.

I have been dealing with a similar situation on a spillway under a pond it always seems to take more stone and you would think . One thing I found very helpful we're old mini excavator tracks lie them down in the ditch and fill them with stone it really slows the water down and they stay put
You're right John, the proper way to fix the erosion problem is to regrade, but when it's the time of year when you get quite a lot of rain isn't the best time for that. So, "patching" it with riprap is just a stopgap. But good on ya for putting T-posts to hold the riprap in place better, and for putting up the safety fence on top of the headwall.
Seen a lot of similar comments and I definitely agree with the general consensus, I would much rather permanently fix the issue and have a bit of sediment in a pond than pay money to have it be in the same condition in a couple years. But as you say, gotta do what you are hired to do, even when its not the way you would do it.
Ive got one going thru the middle of my pasture. It started out a couple inches deep 15 years ago. Now its 3 feet deep in places! It starts as a culvert under the road. So, at some point(probably after I’m a widow) i will have it completely encased in 24 inch double wall culvert pipe, all the way to the other side, about 500 feet! I will fill in the pasture so there is only a small swale from each end(swale currently cuts the pasture in two) and the drop from house to swale is about 10 feet. Im going to fill it in so it only drops about a foot or so, so i can walk to the barn comfortably. Its gonna be expensive, but it only has to be done once, and will improve the utility of this place.
I would have used the mini to drive those tpost down, do it all the time, well you had the right idea, but the name of the game is to do what the client wants done, an you did what they wanted, it should work, but like you said, grading all that out an putting a swale in with fabric an rip rap would be much more eye appealing, thanks for sharing.
Yeah I've found that sometimes its not about doing it the right way, its about doing it the way the customer wants. He'll find out in a few years when there's more erosion and silt that maybe regrading the ditch, putting in fabric and then covering with rock was the better way to do it.

With all the rain we’ve gotten this fall & winter, he might have been afraid we’d get another gully washer either while you have opened up or before it would have a chance to settle. Maybe if was the dry season the inspector would have let you regrade it? Oh well mo money down the line!
question: even though they wanted the riprap the water still flow over the clay bottom right, so it will still be cutting a trench may slower but still. if they had followed your thought i would have cost more, assumption, but by regrading, laying in the geo-fabric, then placing in the raprap, they would have never had to worry about water erosion from this again right?

Yes butthey are only used on bigger jobs. Where you have room to move a crane in. Its too expensive for this job. And those are called T posts, not rebar. Rebar is entirely different.
What you initially said that you wanted to do was absolutely the right thing to do. I really don't know the drainage area or how much head is feeding that pipe but if that is a 24" RCP, I'd bet the flow is a good 35 CFS or more with a velocity of 25 FPS or more. The washed out channel turning to the right just as it exits the headwall needed to be straightened out and the washed out area needed to be filled and graded just like you said. Rip Rap needs to be placed on a filter blanket like you said which covers the entire ditch including running up the sides. It should be 2' thick including up the sides. The rip rap should not fill the ditch, rather it should be the invert of the ditch and riffles placed maybe 100' apart . With those types of flows, the only thing different than what you said would be to place Class 2 rip rap and not Class 1. If it was the County that told you to leave the ditch where it was and fill it with rip rap, I wouldn't be surprised, but I'm not sure that I would have taken the job or at least get someone to sign off on your liability because that isn't going to perform like they think it will.
What size riprap did you use? I have a similar (but not as bad) situation, trying to get #4 but might have to go with #3 regrade is not feasible they way it is - thanks!

my biggest concern would be that the water is going to continue to run down the right side of the ditch eating the bank out unless the riprap is raised higher than the original cut or rip rap
What will happen when that rip rap sinks into the ground? It seems like the soil in the ditch (under the rip rap) would continue to expand and deepen with the weight of the rip rap and water continuing to move downhill.
Should have opened it up and laid fabric and base then added rip rap to the edges. Otherwise the next big rain storm is going to start the erosion process again. You had the right idea but were told to do it that way.

I do not understand this solution. Whoever came up with this does not seem to understand that the volume the rip rap takes up now reduces the volume of water that can travel down this channel. As a result, the rip rap will fill with water and 'sit' like a solid dam and all the excess water that can not find 'room' in the channel will now travel on top of the rip rap and spread out, either flooding over the channel edge or dig into the soft bank on the right and erode it even further. Water takes the path of least resistance and will not try to force itself through the rip rap. It will flow elsewhere and dig a new trench or widen the current one.
Nice work. This is not a bad solution. If it doesn't work out, so what. Just add more rip rap in a few years. Big rip rap. Water goes where it wants. The better solution might not have worked out either.

You did a good job with what they wanted & documented on video you did not agree with their choice. Customer is paying for what they want. Lots of Rock. Could you have used recycled crushed concrete fill in the bottom of trench? Then, put the more expensive rip rap rock on upper layers. Would drain pipe in the bottom helped move water out with less future erosion? Western USFS National Forests use pipe & rock combinations for steep erosion prevention to remove water from roads. Rebuild swell with packed clay, pipe, fabric & rock. Protect the fastest moving water from causing erosion. Not done correctly from the beginning. Should have big pipe to bottom of steep slope with swell & rock originally. Very poor original plan designed to fail. Hope it works, not your fault if it doesn't work. Offer to come back, you would be glad to help again.
