    I think it's fascinating hearing someone talk about death the way he does. It's scary in a way, since most old people don't want to mention it, have a thought that there might be an afterlife, or have just accepted it. Seeing an old intelligent man discuss it with the insight that he is soon gone and that's it gives an uncomfortable feeling that is hard to shake, even if I agree fully with his thinking.

    • @KipIngram
      @KipIngram 5 месяцев назад

      I think it'll all be ok. Years ago I set out on a quest to understand consciousness, at the level of physics. I started that with a PhD in engineering, and over the decades since I've learned a LOT of physics. And the conclusion I eventually reached is that... physics offers no explanation. I see ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in our major physical theories that point in any way toward how consciousness "actually works." I think it's just something completely different and outside of those theories and we just DON'T UNDERSTAND IT, at all. That's vastly comforting to me - it really means that science has nothing to say about any of it, including death.
      I think that our minds are somehow "more" than our bodies, and while that doesn't guarantee that there is some aspect of existence that persists after death, I tend toward the idea that there is. What exactly it will be I have no idea, and I don't think anyone has any real idea either - I think the chances that any of our major "spiritual world view" is precisely right are slim to none.
      I think something probably comes after, and we'll all get to find out what it is eventually. And, if not... well, it won't matter to us then anyway, will it? I've had a wonderful life and have raised five beautiful and wonderful daughters, and am up to three grandchildren to enjoy so far. There have been some difficult times, but generally speaking I have no complaints about the quality of life I've gotten to enjoy.

  • @KipIngram

    I love the state of "contented peace" Conway seems to have reached in his later years. I think that's the best any of us can ask for.

At the time I was 25 years old and suddenly confronted with my own mortality when up to this point I thought I was nearly invulnerable. As if you were at max speed at one moment and then everything is in slow motion in the next. I don't know if anyone can unterstand this without having experienced something of this kind.

They all looked different visually from the explosions in Conway's Game of Life for example I noticed some would form tunnels and others would form crystal-like shapes. I don't remember the rules or names of these cellular automata but it shouldn't be too difficult to find similar ones online.

      I guess I was mistaken in thinking that I was commenting on avoiding drawing overly detailed conclusions from limited data. I apologize for doing such a terrible job in communicating a point and in trying to infer what was or was not known.

    • @JasonMitchellofcompsci
      @JasonMitchellofcompsci 9 лет назад

      *****, ah yes. I know my synaptic learning machines well. The issue is that when you do the math the neuron is a critical part of the math. Mathimatically the nueron is the transform and the synapse is the data. When you don't have active data going there is only so much it can tell you. To understand the brain would be to understand what transforms it is performing when it receives data not which data lines were used the most / were possible. Of course looking at the data lines can be inspiring and might help settle a question or two for which there is debate but it will never lead to understanding a particular brain at an intimate level. No amount of math is going to save you if the data just isn't there in the synapses to do the math at that level.

    • @cubeaman
      @cubeaman 9 лет назад

      Ryanator You may be able to see more of the activity based on stimuli when it is still functioning, but there are other things you can look at when it is not.

    I can do all except the wave, but that one just looks like it needs practice to learn.

    I don't think the point of this video is the tongue exercises.

    Could that be, by any chance, be an authentic signature by Edwin Aldrin on the photograph on Brady's mantelpiece?

    Numberphile Please explain this!
    There's an old Tamil statement that predicts the hypotenuse of a right angle triangle to an astonishing accuracy considering it doesn't involve roots! This is how it goes:
    “Odum Neelam Thanai Ore Ettu
    Kooru thaaki Koorilae Ondrai
    Thalli Kundrathil Paadhiyai Saerthal
    Varuvathu Karnam Thane”
    This translates to something like -
    "Subtract one eight of the length (longer side) from the length, and add a half of the height to get the hypotenuse" i.e. 7/8*L + H/2 which approximates quite well to the hypotenuse! Seems like an interesting subject to elaborate on! Please reply! :D
