I played the base denizens missions when I first started playing NMS (all those many years ago) thinking they had to be completed...they go on forever, and those guys have problems that cannot be resolved by mortal man.

And you can also "Scrap" them to gain "upgrade slots for other tools.. on the traveler/Nada station. left teleporter (right next to the portal)

An easy way to remember the difference between a stalactite and a stalagmite, stalagmites hang "tight" on the ceiling. So the stalagmites must be on the floor. 😉
