dear steve..on the subject of lathes . my first was a milne.. treadle lathe ...i soon sorted that out by fitting a morris car gear box powered by an electric motor of an industrial sewing machine.. i sold it later to a friend for twice what i payed for it ! then whilst working for a scrap merchant i got a dean smith & grace . ! a z13 i think . £20 then got a victoria shaper £15. then a pedetal milling machine £10..then decided to move to spain.. sold the lot for £150.. regreted it ever since....we all let the sand slip through our fingers.. wish i could turn the clock back..regards... laurence
do you have the pt. no. for tool inserts for truing up hardened lathe jaws ? great video by the way!

I could have used this set-up the other day. I had to face a flat and drill and tap some 2 inch steel balls for my front porch railings. I managed to get the tap started in the lathe but, only a thread or two, before the tap started slipping in the tailstock drill chuck. Got the job done but, your accessory would have made it much easier. I do enjoy your videos. Thank you for making them. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Cheers!
Hello Steve, this is the very first video I watched 😀 you. Nice to make your tooling. I'm in the process to get my Lathe setup, and have been saving lots of videos. Have a good 👍 day, and be sure to see more.
Hi Keith Thanks yes I will be making some more soon. Great that you have a lathe. Regards Steve
AWESOME. You are by far helping me out. Thank you for the videos your putting out. Very knowledgeable and wise. The things you can come up with.
Beautiful project and as always thank you for such great videos!
Hi Steve, came across your videos and WOW great videos and nice fabrication! I started to watch from the beginning and can't stop to watching your videos. Can't wait to see what's the next video. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Lots of good tips! I have the chuck and was about to start on the MT2 adapter, so your video is of great interest.
Excellent explanation.
And a nice looking end result. Thank you.
The transfer screw is a great idea - thanks!
Gday Steve, great job mate, that’s a great idea with the grub screws and pointed Allen key to transfer the centre, I’ve never seen nor heard of this before, I wish you and your family a wonderful Christmas and please stay safe mate, cheers Matty
Hi Mat. Thanks Have a great Christmas as well. I got the idea from someone else using the grub screws although they fixed the allen keys in place a little longer and used a socket to screw them in. I did see on one engineering retail site that they sell sets of transfer screws but they were quite expensive. Regards Steve
Nice project Steve!
Fantastic video! And yes, I also use DC inserts (Sumitomo DCGT 11T304MN-SC,or DGGT11T304R-FX), and they cut great on many types of steel.
Mr. Jordan, I have enjoyed this video as much as the many other very clever videos that you have produced. Keep them coming please. Happy Holidays to you and yours in the UK... Joe
Nice work Steve can’t wait to get a lathe
Thanks for all you video's and tips this year. Wishing you, your family and friend a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous and Happy New Year.from down under.

Very handy being able to put chucks in the tailstock. Having a myford I was able to buy a 2MT arbour with the myford thread on it so I can mount any of my chucks in the tailstock or in the morse taper of another lathe.
Yes I have one of those as well. I have'nt tried it with large screw taps though as I thought maybe it would unscrew from the 2mt adapter?
@@SteveJordan Going forward it would be fine, reversing back out there is a chance I guess but you could always use a brace against the bed which would stop the taper slipping as well.
How do you use a brace against the bed?
Good morning Steve I hope you are well. I have followed your videos on upgrading the mini lathe over the years and have carried out many of your upgrades and machining fixtures on my previous 7x14 mini lathe. I now have a new 8x16 mini lathe and am about to make your 4 jaw tapping chuck fixture however I propose to use an aluminium bar end which I already have. Do you think that aluminium would be suitable or should I try to find a steel or cast iron bar end. I have learned a lot and have drawn much inspiration by following your videos. I wish you well, thank you very much.
Thank you for you videos, it's a pleasure. the links are great, i've just bought some of tools you present!
Great tricks there Jorden
Thank you Jordan. Great video!
Excellent video Steve. Many thanks.
Thanks for the transfer punch jack !!
Good job! Stay healthy!
I agree, thank you for a very interesting and well made tool and video - Happy Christmas!
Thanks....Have a great Christmas as well
Outstanding
Thanks again, Steve for yet another interesting video. That swaging ball tool is ingenious, as well as your transfer screw tips. Merry Christmas and all the best for the New Year to come!
Johan/ DIYSwede
Hi Johan Thanks. Have a great Christmas as well. I hope to show the swaging tools again soon and more on what you can do with them in making other components. Although that one is ok, I have a better designed one you may be interesred in.
OK Steve, I HATE you (says the/my Wallet)! The Jack Wagon (me) that carries me around constantly watches your RUclips Videos! For some reason he, more often than not, gets a Wild Hair up his Ass and feels he needs to gut me so he can spend what little money I have in me. He buys the tools you Showcase in your Videos to make the (what he feels are cool items) items you build. I’m so empty my Ribs are showing! This has to stop!!! Best regards, Empty in Minnesota (Wallet), USA.
Steve, I love your RUclips Videos (says the “Jack Wagon” carrying the Wallet - Me)! Please keep up the GREAT work. Your RUclips Videos truly inspires me (FNG - “Fun” New Guy)!
It is GREATLY helpful that you include the links that help us get the right tools/tooling. The details you provide are GREATLY appreciated too! It helps us “NEW” to the Machining big time!!!
Being disabled, you give me the ability to get the right stuff the first time (buy once, cry once)!!!
Wishing you a GREAT New Year and many new Videos for us FNG’s to watch, re-watch, try, go back to the Video(s) to find the detail I missed and make cool things!
May God bless you my Friend!
Best regards,
Willie
P.S. Do you have a link for the 80mm Steel Round you got from Ebay? If you do, please add it to this thread.
The last time I looked he was sold out. There must be other bar ends on Ebay though and one could go to a larger diameter and turn down. Have a great New Year
Regards Steve
Good video Steve!
nice work as always Steve, keep up the good work

We in the States use the same phrase. But I guess we got it from you guys. Lolol "killing two birds....."
Nice work Steve. I love the transfer punches, very smart!!
Hi Luke Thanks I did get the idea of the transfer punches from someone else. They fixed longer allen key parts in but I thought they may need new points if they were used a lot. Have a great Christmas. Regards Steve
You do great work. Keep the videos coming. I am loving my Grizzly mini lathe. How would I add the tachometer?
Wish you a merry X Mas and a very happy new year. I guess another way of doing this drilling in the tail stock malarky is to just use your existing ER Collet Chuck in the tail stock. Even the crappy Chinese ones with 0.002" TIR would be mostly accurate for simple drilling ops. Thanks again for your very informative videos.
Thanks I could use the collet chuck but this method is much faster to use not having to change collets. Have a Great New Year as well. Regards Steve
Enjoyed your work. Would like to know the largest diameter the 80mm chuck will hold (jaws in the normal position I.e not reversed) looking for the clamping range thanks
This video clearly shows how good the VFD performs turning a 80mm dia on a mini lathe impressive.
Hello Steve. Just wanted to let you know that I ordered the Sanou 4 jaw chuck, made a back plate for it, and attached a 2mt by 1/2" x 20 threaded taper (with the recommended LocTite). You were right, it was always a challenge to get a drill chuck tight enough to allow tapping on the lathe. Kind regards, Al
Hi Al thanks for the feedback. I'm pleased you liked the idea....Regards Steve

Turning an Allen key for the transfer punch is a great idea. That definitely a keeper! Still I was disappointed when you talked about"feeling" the level of the height of the points when I know you know darn well that 3 point define a plane. Any rocking is the result of pushing down where those points are not.
No I can feel and see when one is out. I wouldn't have said it if I couldn't. When one makes things like this you get a precision feel whether it is correct or not. I can tell immedietely by the method whether the points are all equal and level. I showed what I meant better in another video on the subject.
@@SteveJordan I don't know what to say to that. I'm astonished that you don't acknowledge that 3 points define a plane or that using a height gage would assure the points were set equally. What's up with the stability of a 3 legged stool? It doesn't rock.

another good video ...........Merry Christmas and a Happy New year ....from Kentucky USA...........
Thank you Steve, I've enjoyed your videos and have learned a lot.I'm in the process of building my own mini Lathe and am wondering if you could make me a drive spindle for it. I'm not sure of the proper bearing sizes to use, any info to point me in the right directions Greatly appreciated.
Oh, by the way.... Merry Christmas and have a safe and Happy New Year from Canada!
Hi Steve i wonder can i
use cast iron for a back plate
Hi yes that is what most backplates are made of.
Does the Morse taper just slide in your tailstock or do you have a draw bar in the rear? I see threads in the rear of the Morse taper shank. Do you have any problems with the shank spinning when tapping?
Hi, they just slide into place. Sometimes they spin though. You have to make sure they are clean with no oil.
The Chinese Mini lathe has a short winding travel. I normally shorten the mt2 taper tool a bit so there is more travel before they are ejected. If you don't know what I mean I can show this on a short video? Regards Steve
Isn't it possible to attach the MT arbor directly to the spindle when machining it? It would result in a greater accuracy even without the need of indicating. At least my mini lathe (TOS MN80) is capable of holding MT tools directly in the spindle.
Hi yes it could. Mine has an MT3 taper spindle so I would have to use a tapered sleeve. It is much quicker to machine it like I did though and the accuracy is spot on. Regards Steve
you know they make chucks for taps
Hello Steve.
I've bought one of these 80 mm 4 jaw self centering chucks. A cute little thing for which I'm about to make a backplate.
I've thought about also making a crotch pad for center drilling, but is it really necessary to have one of these. I mean the 4 jaw chuck makes it possible to bore in the center of a rod when holding or clamping "diagonally" in the 4 jaws, right?
Alternatively, could you combine a crotch pad with MT2 taper and a back plate with MT2, so that it could be used in both circumstances or as both one at a time? Just to save "stock" material which is hard to come by. Most companies do not sell to "privateers"/hobbyists due to complex tax regulations. I'm lucky though that I have a limited source at a local "technical" college in the form of scrap metal.
Thanks in advance for an answer on the question and for your ever inspiring videos.
"RagnarOK"
Hi Regnar, I have never used mine diagonally yet, as I have always used my independent 4 jaw chuck for doing bar like that. I must give it a go tomorrow and see. I haven't heard the term 'crotch pad' I think you are referring to the V block type of tool on an MT2 taper? I have a couple of those with clamps to hold the bar in the tailstock for drilling. I think I did a video on those. I called them a cross drilling adaptor or fixture.
Steve I notice that you are using steel for the backplate . I'v had problems with bruising and galling with steel and now use cast iron . Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Hi if you have a good finish on the backplate and it is kept clean there will be no problems
Also the chuck I use for this set-up will stay on this backplate for good.
Hey Steve, Do you have a link for the soft blank end 2mt arbor that you use in the video ? Thanks - Dave. :-)
Hi Dave they are on this page, be sure to choose the 2MT arbor, you can buy them singularly or 5-off. Regards Steve

Thanks Steve. Much appreciated !
Use a set of vise grips to hold Mt drills, when drilling, or you will ruin the tail stock ram bore.
Well I haven't ruined one in over thirty years of machining. I have never used vice grips once
@@SteveJordan Well i have experienced slipping in a no.3mt,but that was in production turning,a long time ago.Like your video's,you have some unique idea's.
Why use loctite instead of shrink fit?
All methods are valid if it work. Although that was also my first question mark!
Personally I would have stuck one part in freezer, the other in the oven. A good interference fit never fail. ;-)
Could not find the arbor you used in the video.
Do you have e-bay item number?
Great learning videos!
thank you
Need some oil when drilling out mate
lock tight 638
Its a very high strength adhesive. It will never come apart unless it is heated up to a certain high temperature and even then it is difficult to break
Does the country of origin of a tool always be announced? You don’t refer to The Myford as the “British small lathe”. Well at least you did drop the “cheap” accolade from the small red lathe. 🍺. Love your vids and info in any case. 😁
It is always referred to as a Chinese Mini Lathe. I've never said it is a cheap lathe either. I actually think they are very expensive in the UK as they generally need several improvements even if bought from new. Having said that though I think they have excellent capabilities if upgrade a bit. I really like the lathe it is so fast to use.
Yep - I have one too - a Sieg C4/LMS 3536. 8.5"x16" with BLDC motor. Seems fairly capable, but the overall workmanship IS a bit shoddy. Perhaps not by you - but there ARE a lot of videos on You Tube that have as "cheap Chinese" part of their title. I do think (especially with the great offerings from Banggood) they are quickly moving into the "very capable" and "not so cheap" category. :-)
Speed things up. We do not need to watch every revolution as you turn.

I'm from Surrey, England.

Do a little editing. We don't need to see every min. of machining. It's boring.
