The real problem here is that the way California has been budgeting their state money in such a way that they have prioritized ridiculous DEI programs and virtue signaling instead of keeping the fire departments funded nor keeping up with forestry programs that would prevent disasters like we are seeing today. It seems they have budgeted based on the expectation that the federal government will inevitably backstop the budget when these disasters occur. The American tax payer shouldn’t be on the hook to indemnify the risks California has been taking by neglecting the forests, water infrastructure and fire protection. The 3 most important factors in mega-fires are 1- pre-existing high temperatures 2- prolonged drought 3- most importantly: strong winds. You can have the best firefighters, full reservoirs, fire breaks ( raking the wilderness 😂, 150,000 sq miles, seriously? And note the present fire started in an urbanised area) , etc, that can only do so much. With desert winds of up to 100 miles/h (or even 50 m/h) there is nothing much you can do to prevent new fires from spreading. Note that about all experts agree that clinate change significantly affects the 3 factors mentioned above. These MAGAs haven't gotten a f*cking clue.
I've been making those exact points, too. I'm from Australia. A good deal of my friends and family have been involved in our volunteer fire fighting service. You can't control the wind or the dry conditions, and they are the biggest factors in an uncontrolled burn.

I grew up in San Diego--a place I dearly love. I remember my mother driving her dad's 1939 Buick and when a few drops appeared on the windshield she shouted, "It's raining!" 1- pre-existing high temperatures
2- prolonged drought
3- most importantly: strong winds.
You can have the best firefighters, full reservoirs, fire breaks ( raking the wilderness 😂, 150,000 sq miles, seriously? And note the present fire started in an urbanised area) , etc, that can only do so much.
With desert winds of up to 100 miles/h (or even 50 m/h) there is nothing much you can do to prevent new fires from spreading.
Note that about all experts agree that clinate change significantly affects the 3 factors mentioned above.

You shouldn’t have to beg your president to support your state throughout this type of recovery. It should be a given. No strings, no qualifications for use, no “we’ll only protect you if you pay us enough $ beforehand,” that’s all junk.
