  • Nuestra Señora de los Dolores de Turumba. Domingo de Dolores Sunday September 13, 2020. 232nd anniversary of the discovery of the original painting of the Lady of Sorrows. THE Philippines’ longest Marian celebration. A 200-year old wooden statue is carried outside the Pakil, Laguna church eight times every year on the Lupi Fiestas - seven times during the Easter Season and then once in this month of September on Domingo de Dolor which celebrates the day in 1788, when the original image of the virgin of sorrows - a nine inch by eleven inch wood-framed painting on tin - was first discovered and carried to the church.
on what since 1668 has been the exact date of the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows.
Biblical reference to Mary’s sorrows can be found in the Gospel of Luke - the priest Simeon predicts to Mary how a sword would one day pierce her soul, in the anguish of her witness to the sufferings of her son Jesus.
The oil painting was brought to the Philippines by Spanish missionaries but was lost overboard in rough weather on the Laguna de Bay off the coast of Pakil town 232 years ago. Some local fisherman spotted it floating in the water, but they had to leave it on shore when they found it too heavy to carry. The next Sunday some women ran across it but also could not lift it, so they called the parish priest who came in procession with some altar boys, saying some prayers. Suddenly he was able to lift the image. The spontaneous dance of joy at the miraculous event came to be known as the Turumba dance, The word turumba is from the Tagalog phrase “Natumbá sa lakí ng tuwâ” -falling over in joy. A few years after the painting was found, the parish requested for a large wooden image to be carved in Spain and brought to Pakil. This is the image which is taken out for public veneration.
In recognition of miracles accredited to it, the image was Episcopally crowned by the Bishop of Lipa, Alejandro Olalia In 1953 by order of Pope Pius XII, and in 2016 Our Lady of Sorrows of Turumba was formally declared as the "Mother and Patroness of Laguna Lake."
This year’s 2020 Domingo de Dolor was much more subdued than the usual raucous celebrations due to the covid pandemic, but the image was taken on a motorized journey to nearby towns while scenes of the day’s activities were shared live for devotees via Livestream on the facebook page of Pakil’s St. Peter of Alcantara Parish Church.
