    It's so difficult to cover Steely Dan and do it justice, but this is freaking awesome!

  • @KathleenEReed
    @KathleenEReed Год назад +30

    They had no benchmarks for this tune, no one's expectations to meet. The band took the tune, made it their own and handed us champagne! John Cowan's and Michael McDonald's voices do it justice! And Patrick's and John's guitar 'conversation' towards the end was just brilliant! What a thrill it must have been to be part of the audience!

      I was remiss in not mentioning Marc Russo's saxophone in all its trilling, baffling, growling excellence. It gave me chills.

      @@KathleenEReedIn the section right after Pat Simmons finished singing his verse, Marc mirrored Pat's raw/distorted sound; this musical couplet really added to this live cover. That kind of spontaneous interplay is a joy to behold.

    My wife and I first heard Michael McDonald's voice on this song (here at 3:00) on Sunday April 21, 1974, when Steely Dan headlined at the U. of Toledo. He was so good on that tour that Becker & Fagen made him the featured backing vocalist on their next album, 1975's "Katy Lied." Then, when Steely Dan refused to tour behind that album, he was available to fill in for an ailing Tom Johnston with The Doobie Brothers. We saw them in April 1977 at Bowling Green State U. Steely Dan was the opening act for The Doobies on several 1973 tour dates.

    Love John Cowan! I saw the Doobies in 2018 or 19 - they were touring with Steely Dan. We were in our seats right away - about the 5th row or so right in front of John - most of the people hadn't made it to their seats - John noticed my wife and I getting into the music right away and basically played directly to us, smiling and playing that bass. It's like we were showing each other appreciation.

    Oh, this was so much fun to see! I saw the Doobies last summer, with both Tom Johnston and Michael MacDonald (amazing show at Jones Beach, the sound quality was fabulous!), and then saw Steely Dan there a week later. Lifelong fan of both bands, with all their interconnections, so it was a dream seeing them back to back.
    I guess there's just some songs that can't be performed without Tom, which (despite the Doobie's large catalog) made space for this cover. I wish him a speedy recovery.

      Michael didn't play on the original, but joined the band on the '74 tour that followed. Def worth finding the recordings here He sings the same bridge part he does here as well as the lead on Show Biz Kids and his unmistakable high notes throughout. He was one of the Dan's secret weapons.

      @johnr1294 Hey, glad you like it. We're all different. I listened to it again. The acoustics and recording doesn't help, the bass is a blur and sounds off the beat, Michael just sounds old, Simmons and McFee finally put some fire to it but way too late. This song should be a strong shuffle not a plod. Search for 'pretzel logic southland 1974' for a version with some punch. The Southland audio is great. There are a number of songs to check out from that concert, Rikki is amazing. If you're a Dan fan you're gonna love it.
