I, of course, never seen Carrie as a villian, but rather her school bullies, her mother or, what seems more accurtae to me, society in general, but this is a take I never heard before, and I like it! thank you for the video, glad people still talk about this story
Hard to believe King wrote it over half a century ago but the themes and characters still resonate today. Billy kinda flew under the radar during the story. Sneaky character. Thanks for watching!
This was a nice deep dive! I forgot about Billy but Ywah, he is definitely a guy to watch out for. I never considered Carrie herself to be a villain; even though by prom night she was aware of and practising with her powers, her extreme distress caused her to completely lose control, which is hardly an unheard of phenomenon in stories about people with powers. What happened as a result was 100% an accident, albeit a catstrophic one. Also I would absolutely love to read that Carrie/Firestarter crossover AU/sequel! That sounds awesome!
Carrie is definitely a sympathetic character. Billy kinda flew under the radar for most of the book. Pulling the strings, so to speak. I would like to see Carrie get a redemption arc in a sequel. Maybe somebody will do a fan fiction story.
I think Billy zeros in on Carrie because he is looked down on by Chris, he is a bad boy from wrong side of the tracks, given his absent father and drunk mother, he is likely poor and put together his car with his own hands. He has street smarts but no social status. Humiliating Carrie is likely his only way of feeling some sense of status/power when really he is on the lower rung of society.
First time coming across your channel, really enjoyed your analysis (I'm a massive King fan and Carrie is one of my favorites. I think the original movie is perfection!).
I love this book and the Brian de Palma movie of Carrie. I had a fun time with both of them. I love the pissed off look on her face when she gets covered in blood. The music that goes with it is great. The doors to school slamming shut and the destruction that follows. I also really love the movie Scarface as well. I enjoyed the raining rocks part of the book. It is a great debut. Interesting review. I agree that character Billy Nolan was vile.
Brian de Palma did a fantastic job directing Carrie. It's a classic horror movie for me. Kinda gets lost among other horror films. Had a nice 70s dreamy quality to it.
Chris was a nasty person who bullied everyone and got her dad to save her for years. Billy is dumb but dangerous but it’s Chris who has to push Carrie too far. Love talking about a book I read at 12 and has burned ( no pun indentured) it’s way into my 55 yr old heart.
Well it's been a while since I have Read Carrie but from what I remember reading the villians in the book is how I interperet it. Billy Nolan and his GF: Highschool villians(theres a huge amount of them) Main villians: Margaret White with being really extreme with her religious views. However, I wonder how Margret grew up with her mother(who had pyrokenesis) I wish these flashback moments with Margret and her mother were expanded upon. A long with Carries father and how he treated Margret before Carrie was born. Now that I look back on Carrie now it looks more like a case of generational abuse with a hint of the supernatural. 🙂❤📚
Great insight into the generational abuse observation. The book could have used an extra 50 pages to flesh out Margaret's backstory. Or Biily's motivation.

Yes. In a way, he can humiliate Carrie and control Chris at the same time.

Its themes and story still hold true 50 years after it was published.
This is a great analysis! Never thought about this.
Thank you!! Billy just seemed more off than the rest.
Little did you know that your friend who tripped up the stairs would someday become the president of the United States.
I wondered what happened to her. She always excelled at calling me by the wrong name and getting lost in public spaces.
