This lady showed courage and realism in arranging for the other cult members, including Balakrishna's daughter, to escape the collective. She realised that the daughter needed treatment which Balakrishna was denying her, and made contact with the outer world without his knowledge. Those are the actions of a well-meaning, responsible person who must have been aware of Balakrishna's faults.
Instead of giving pat judgments, people should realise that our lack of understanding of the psychology of why young people can be entrapped into cults is a life and death contemporary issue! And also that there are 'cults' and beliefs which are not so obviously damaging, but which attract and control in similar ways.
This woman is hardly weak-willed, as some commentators have described her, and hardly stupid. Before joining the collective she was a brilliant violinist by all accounts, and the daughter of a brilliant mathematician and codebreaker.
But it would not be easy for her to admit to herself that for 40 years of her life she was living a terrible mistake.

Thank you for your empathy. I think you dodged the bullet she's actually the one who tried save the others (but it's highly possible she was involved in brutalising others as well), including Katie the daughter, but she could not save herself.

Poor woman, her life has been literally wasted and thrown away. At least 30 years in prison she would have had access and contact with other people and the world outside and come out with a sane relationship with the world. What she has been through is so much worse - she has lost any form of rational thought. I wonder if somewhere deep inside she knows its all nonsense but that admitting this to herself would mean the complete crumbling of her entire identity so maintaining the lie is the only way she can function?

Perhaps a desperate urge, and compelled to go back to the only existence she knew for so long even if it wasn't great but could function and control her fear.
They all talk with that weird accent so strange, it's a really fascinating case. One of the things I find interesting is that to me when you actually watch these women you can see that deep down they don't really believe in all this stuff only they don't have anything else after 40 years of being force fed this bull.

I believe she helped the girl but then she was warned by him that something bad would happen to her if she didn't claim he is innocent he probably said his special so called powers would kill her and she really does believe all that he says she's clearly conditioned and scared of him

If he cared so much about people why wouldn't he want his own daughter to get medical help? And why did that poor deluded woman have to escape in order for her to get treatment. Thats the question he should have put to her because that proves that he didn't want her to get medical help and she obviously knew this. Plus when she lies she does the double blink tell. I think she can't except what happened because it means everything you believed in is false. She's clearly a very damaged person but doesn't seem to realise it.

Northern Ireland. Her father was later an lecturer at Queen's university Belfast. She developed an Indian accent from being in the collective.

@@dxtura "Comrade Bala" grew up in Singapore so it makes sense. I guess he did most of the talking in the commune - so his female followers ended up talking like him.
