  • I always dreamed of climbing with David. I would watch videos of David climbing with Conrad Anker and say... when I'm 28, David will be 42 and I'll be climbing with him. Sadly, those dreams are now destroyed, as David was killed in an avalanche, alongside Jess Roskelley and Hansjorg Auer. They were climbing the M-16 route on Howse Peak. When I first heard the news on Wednesday, I paused... This can't be real... This wouldn't happen to David. But after many hours, I finally admitted to myself David is gone. We must not remember David as a man who died in an avalanche... but instead remember him as the thoughtful, energetic and motivated person he was. Rest in peace David... may your legacy live on.

Just a few months ago I began watching videos on RUclips of alpinists climbing big mountains. I didn't know who David Lama was. When I first watched a David Lama video on RUclips I was so incredibly amazed that I soon found myself watching every single video of David Lama available on RUclips. I thought "wow, this guy is such a young and talented mountaineer". I soon discovered that he was one of the most talented climbers in the world. His videos were really inspiring to me. I never thought the life and career of such a talented and young climber would end so soon. On his videos David always looked so passionate about climbing, he always looked so calm and in control.
I try to find some meaning out of this big tragedy. To me the big lesson here is to follow your dreams with passion no matter what. To do what you love and to love what you do. Always. It doesn't really matter how long you live as long as what you do in life makes you happy. It is not about how long you live but how much you enjoy what you do in life regardless of your age.
Great lessons by this young and talented climber. Thank you so much David for the inspiration. May you rest in peace.

He died doing what he loved having already confronted the risks that are out of his reach. So please don’t argue and just appreciate the man that was once Mr. Lama

I refuse to rot away in some hospital bed and I refuse to allow anyone tell me where/how I should die, or that I should never fight my illness. My happy days of climbing, skating, horse riding dancing, being a chef(only to name a few) have long passed. I'm 47 and doubt to see 50. We all need to stop speaking about death like it's a dirty word. LIVE LIFE while you can cause when your body breaks, it sucks 😢

Not trying to be disrespectful-even if its happening. In climbing and life it is more important to be realistic. Thats my “inspiring” take away from this man.

No, I want a little bit from life...and that is enough. do you want YOUR kid to try to take too much, pushed by sponsorship money? “Too much is never enough” is a sickness. It has only one cure. Its killing the whole world for god’s sake. Glad I’m a nobody so I don’t have to live or die as a proxy for anyone’s insane fantasies... mostly my own. -but yours are special.

RIP David, Jess and Hansjorg. And heartfelt condolences to the loved ones you leave behind. The mountaineer’s life is 10 times greater than the average person. It’s a series of rich and emotional struggles at the edge of human experience. The mountaineer embraces his (her) passion equally with fear and divine joy. He knows no god but of himself and of nature. He is a fierce athelte and dreamer wielding a sharp blade. When he passes, his life becomes the story of sorrow and legend. At the highest level of commitment, he stands before each monumental task in front of him with stubborn determination; and with his comrades, he thinks not of his fate, but of his boundless freedom with tears of elation. He is accepting that the mountain is neither his friend nor his enemy, and by choosing to climb it he acquiesces that on any day the mountain can take him. Such is the irony and ultimate sacrifice of our sport.

This great man is a true athlete in every sense of the word. Rock climbing without help, 🎿 down snow packed mountains. The muscles in his arms look so fragile yet he had amazing incredible strength. He wasn't afraid of dying, he just wanted to live his life. It's so dangerous, what he did but that he did it anyway speaks volumes about him. Wished he were still on this Earth and I send my prayers 🙏 up to his family and his two friends families.

I think its pretty close to say that Lama was on his way to be the alpinist of them all regarding difficult routes if he would have lived on. To achieve so much so young is breathtaking and unheard. His talent was very special. His free ascent of Cerro Torre was only one of these unique feats and this combination of technical climbing ability with alpinist qualities has imo only been seen very few times . Dani Arnold isnt far behind and a Hans Jörg Auer also was an absolute animal (The fish in free solo is close to Honnolds El Capitan). Imo had Lama lived on he would have gone up to be considered the most talented alpinist of all time with fantastic resume. It doesnt really matter as mountains are imo not for competition but friendship and respect but its still mesmerizing and most of his ascents have a beauty in style and routes he choose.
In a way Lama continued in Wolfgang Güllichs foot steps. Much like if Güllich would have been his father. IF you look at their lives there are so many similarities. Güllich also was for quite some time the best climber in the world period but then ventured on to alpine style climbs and free solos. Lamas Cerro Torre project reminds me of Wolfgangs Trango Tower free ascent of Eternal flame.
Both were free thinkers and continued to be very respectful, friendly and not caring about financial sucess. They will always be remembered and by that also Hans Jörg Auer and Jess Roskelly. RIP.

The somnolent skies the iced snow bridge, reaching from on to another ridge. Hands frost bitten, eyes half blind, two friends lost and ropes hard to find. The wind icy and cuts so deep, my inner core, there is no heat. Dear God please help me, for I'm so cold, hours ago, young eager and forever bold. Now reduced to a pitiful stumbling man, reach down please and hold my hand. I'm in a place, no conquest now, I know not my journey, the why or the how. For my climbing at last has come to and end, no courage or strength, or hope to spend. Lay me down and spare the pain, find a place for my body lain. The mountain has won, I did my best, oh how I failed that ultimate test. My cairn is there for my spirit to dwell, read the inscription and read it well. "Man is mere mortal, climbing up to the gods, consider your strengths, consider the odds. For this man fell, as others have done, for many have tried, and succeeded there are none. But in time one will come, strong and with fright, standing atop the mountain, and bathed in it's light. 'We the lost and fallen all came for that chance, to bathe in the sunlight, our life enhanced. Hey ! We are all different and we cannot understand everything about others action and life. I think it is amazing and incredible to look at what some gives us to look at...about skills and fearlessness...adventures and spectacular scenery. Some how it is inspirational...and challenges all to understand...that everyone has bigger potential.... that it is about doing it...belive and be fearless. However I think many of those things about climbing is to stretch the luck and the safety....way too far. Than again...it seems that someone has the gift to do such a things...and it ...as i said has many different impacts on others life and others perspectives...others beliefs...others ability to complete and fulfill dreams. Much respect for the skills, bravery and thanks for sharing. I agree....that one should live ... and blossom, instead of regret a boring life...when old. Be safe...take care.
