Perhaps like many of your viewers, at age 80, I am one generation removed from a family farm, where I spent summers in my youth. That family farm was in southern Illinois, (vicinity of Sparta, Campbell Hill, Ava, Red Bud, etc., how I do love these old names!) and I can remember driving the tractor at age nine during the baling. This RUclips channel is a great blessing to an old man.
I spent my youth in Red Bud, Waterloo, Valmeyer and Dupo areas...all along Route 3. You have 18 years on me but living amongst farmers and ranchers while growing up...absolutely the best! This channel brings back all those wonderful memories❤

I'm only 72 but I grew up on a farm and several of my father's family had farms and I took early retirement and bought a farm so it's easy to relate.
4:20 Bolt in pins, just reverse them to the inside and you can use it on the case. Some people don’t like to do it, but I’ve never had a problem when making old implements fit
Precisely what I was going to suggest. Easy fix. Although setting it up with a quick-hitch for the front and adapting a hydraulic top link to automate blade angle sounds just like an Evan project.

Evan, take a tip from the Millenial Farmer and cut the hood string off of your hoodies. Farmers are always around rotating equipment and getting one of those strings tangled up would be a bad day for sure.

your engine should be turning over before you start to spray starting fluid into air intake. if a valve was open and filled a cylinder with fluid it could pre ignite and damage the engine
Back in the late ‘60s I found an electric dipstick to keep the oil warm in the winter. 😄
Like George Davidson said earlier, You could move the vertical arms of the grader blade and put them on the inside to gain more room if you wanted it to fit on the Case tractor.
At the shop we call it a can of "start you bastard" 😊

Howdyyawl from the land down under. Nothing wrong with an old tractor. Strong& dependable. Might want to turn the battery around. You can still use the implements, have to weld different eyelets on. In South Australia we have a product called ( start ya bastard ).😂 works well with all engines. Keep plugging along, you'll get there. Sometimes it takes more patients than time

Saw a Case 931 row crop at the tractor parade/show near the Mackinaw bridge in northern Michigan a few years ago. It had been restored to like new condition. Was a real beauty! Very different from the one I still have of the identical model purchased by my father in spring 1969. We used ether to start it many times when we forgot to plug in the block heater.

There are actual water block heaters that you can put into one of the freeze plugs or there are ones that can be put into the lower radiator hose. Changing out the fuel filters and making sure the lines are clean and not leaking from the tank to the injection pump will solve a lot of the hard starting issues.

When I was 15 I worked for a farmer ! The tractor I got to use was a Case , looked yours , forgot to put fuel in it after lunch, it died I tried to restart it started to run In reverse and blew oil out the air breather !!!! I about died , I was afraid I blew it up , I went and told the farmer ,He was not happy with me at all !!!! I never did that again !!!! I LOVED FARMING !!!
We had a case tractor at our oil patch similar to yours... No glo plug... and we used ether every time... brake cleaner works the exact same as ether if you're in a pinch

For the Case tractor,scotch briting the tins then Vice grip garage clear coat either wipe on,or spray.Heater blanket via hot point for the engine when the snow arrives.

Case - always keep stabilizer in the diesel. Check the antifreeze level, the alternator belt and hydraulic fluid level.

I grew up running Case tractors, 730s and their gas brothers, the 741 on a small dairy farm in upstate NY. Those old girls were workhorses, just hour after hour of field work. They also had an old SC and a 700, and later the bigger 1070s. I'm always on the prowl for an old one, mainly for nostalgia of course. The only problem I remember with them is, as you've pointed out, the old diesels sure don't like the cold lol. Keep the videos up, love your place and videos!
We use ether for our diesel tractors and skid steers all the time. It's highly combustible and will work in any engine that I know of. Works wonders definitely recommend for older diesel engines. Not so sure how well the new piles of junk would like ether.
You could put the lifting pins facing inside instead of out so that it would fit on the Case.
If the tractor had non detergent oil in it you should probably clean the pan out. If nothing else, change it after a short time. Non-detergent oils do not suspend the debris, they allow it to settle to the bottom. This would be good for your oil bath air filter.
Be careful with the starting fluid both gas and especially diesel. You can get an over rev or fuel wash if you're not careful.
A block heater that heats the water would be your best choice.

Be very careful with mechanic in a can. Use too much and it will blow a head gasket, or worse yet, crack a head. Much better to install an engine tank heater and warm the coolant up for an hour or two. The coolant heaters heat the heads where the compression takes place. Oil pan heaters are practically useless. Thanks for giving the old CASE some love.

I have used Kats circulating tank heaters for years on older tractors,easy to install,and work good,I would suggest changing the hydraulic oil and any filters or screens on your case,cheap maintenance
My family has always used a circulating heater that ties into the coolant line. It has always worked for us here in alberta
I actually saw a guy on Facebook marketplace with 730 parts for sale in Michigan, including a set of fenders. My husband's family used Case tractors exclusively and think the 30 series are excellent tractors that produced above average power for the fuel consumed. Although he is quite I'll he is going to an auction this weekend with his oxygen and walker I hopes of buying another old Case tractor :-)
The cylinder on the blade isn't a bad idea, but I would try to get a wider one, especially if your blade isn't wider than half the road when it's rotated at an angle. It's not uncommon for us to have an issue starting in the cold, we have water jacket coils on ours. We use Rotella T4 on our older diesel tractors and have been for 15 years, but I do use Motorcraft on my 05 F250 diesel truck. I enjoyed watching, have a great dinner and remainder of week.

If you get you an old service book for the case they have a cold start valve on the injection pump it really helps when it's cold.
I'm not a tractor maintenance person but that tool drawer with organized wrenches and sockets? Yes, please! My hubby needs that organization tool.
On the Case tractor I'd forget about the magnet heater for the block and get a Kats inline coolant heater. It makes a huge difference on my IH 484, it will warm the coolant up to 160 or more before you start it.
Evan I'm at greater blade take the wishbones at the top once the bolts are out and heat the wishbones up and bend them so that they'll fit in board instead of outboard so you'll get your 26 inches and then put the bolts back in

I've got a similar style blade and just run the tractor in reverse with it on. With the slight curve on the blade, running in reverse the blade seems to float over the ground while I am pushing snow. I lose a lot less gravel and sod that way LOL
You are doing a great job in restoration and cleanup of the Chalmers. With each piece you remove it is obvious how dirty and in need of repair/cleaning it is. Should run like a new one when you finish!
Lol the old saying about CASE tractors is CANT AFFORD SOMETHING ELSE but I am an old man and I have owned 8 case tractors in my life that I used on the farm and I loved them.The 930 I had for many years and it was one of the best tractors I ever owned. I am a farmall fan and I have restored many of them over the years. I know people love the John deere but I only love the old ones 50s jd 60 73o or the 4o20. I know a lot of people in my area have gone RED lately.
I think you should be that guy who does go to auctions for parts for the Case and paint it and keep it running. I think it should be a hobby tractor and you can show it off on this channel as well as ride it in 4th of July parades etc.
Evan, I have the exact same tractor! It had the same hard starting issue when I got it. It sounds to me that your starter is lazy. I fixed mine by soldering new heavier gauge brush leads on. The old ones were burned from years of use. The difference is about double the rpm of the starter. I will soon get a picture of my 730 and show you how much our tractors look alike!

When you were talking about using ether to start the tractor I was thinking that you've never watched Diesel Creek, he has a thing for rescuing old equipment and I've seen him use it countless times on diesel engines. I've used it a few times myself.
The 06 series have low compression engines with glow plugs. You made a good choice

Very good job on changing the oil I think you should fully restore it paint it but maybe first just give it a really good bath in this next summer what about the hydraulic oil either you don't know when that last was being changed
That D17 brings back some memories from my teens. For a Summer I worked on my uncle's farm, doing whatever was needed. Lots of picking rocks out of fields with an old Farmall model A, running bin wagons back and forth with various tractors, mowing, disking, and harrowing with an Allis-Chalmers WC, sickle-bar mowing with a Farmall model H, odd jobs with a couple of Massey-Harris 44's, a bit of harvesting using an old 1950's open-cab Massey Harris combine, and even some logging work on an old 3-cylinder 2-stroke 1960's Franklin cable-drag log skidder with some loading work on an old 1950's knuckle-boom loader. One semi-humerous incident with a diesel D17 jumps out at me, though. It was corn-picking time, and my job was running bin wagons to and from the corn crib area. On one trip after off-loading, I forgot to release the brake-set latch, and started down the road with the brakes still locked. Didn't feel any different, and I only realized it after smoke started pouring out of the two vent holes near the ends of the axles. I immediately stopped (brakes still had some room to apply more pressure) and released them. My uncle didn't seem to concerned about it, and we had a bit of a laugh.
We've used starting fluid to start our old D-2 catapillar
Oil pan and coolant heaters work best at maintaining heat in an engine. Plug in when engine is already warm. Stating fluid is your best friend when it is cold.
I was thinking about all your tractors and that nice workshop…. Before you seal up the ceiling, you might want to consider putting in an exhaust vent/fan or pipe that you can drop down and put over a tractor’s smokestack so it blows the exhaust outside instead of sooting up your shop. Something similar to what a car shop would have to vent car exhaust out their garage doors. Having an exhaust fan/vent probably wouldn’t be a bad idea regardless.

You can turn one our both attechment pionts on the grader around to the inside then it could fit on 26 inch on the case
I think your case has a grid heater on it that is Hooked to the intake manifold. You should be able to turn your key counter clockwise for 10 or 15 secand then try starting it, but turn it all the way clockwise. First to see if that helps out you can also look inside of the intake. Manifold and see if there's a wire attached to like a little stud that would be your greater.
Your 730 has a manifold preheated on it. I can see the cable on the left side of your engine. Turn your key the opposite way of starter engagement and it will preheat the intake air. You should hear a click when it starts heating. Hold it for a count of 60 to 80, depends on how cold it is . Release the key and attempt a normal start procedure. It will make a great difference in your cold start attempts. If it's not working, remove the heat element it may have a broken heat coil. Or the mechanism that transfer current to the element may be defective. Good to start the engine until the Temps dip to the low 20s. Then you should rely on a engine tank heater. Case tractors do not like either, good why to Crack the heads. Costly repair. I own many old Case Tractors but no 730 Diesels, only 730 is a gas tractor
The key don't turn left. Maybe someone put the wrong key switch in it.
Very possible. Should be a spring loaded switch that returns to the center position when released. You may have to visit a Case Dealer for an original switch or a salvage yard for a donation switch. You can activate the manifold with a cable from your battery to see if it's working first in case you need more parts relaced.
@harleyrozeboom7826 the key switch acts like a lawn mower key switch. right to run and momentary farther right to start. probably the wrong key switch.

That 730 is an early one being an low tin. So it might not have the pre heater or manifold heater, those tractors don't mind a little shot of starting fluid as long as you don't go crazy. Those early years from the 400's in 1955 through right around 60 had an ether capsule cold starting aid.
I saw in the video there is a cable running from the heater on the intake manifold... if you get the intake hot...there may be no need for the ether
i use whatever almost empty oil in oil bath cleaners my last time i changed it on my farmall m, it was a mix of 30 weight, gear oil like a 80w90 and 0w20 from my wifes car to dilute it lol
I have a latter year 730 if you replace the air intake heater makes a huge difference with cold starting. It threads in underside air intake. It's definitely cool seeing the difference between your 730 and my 66 730

For how black the old oil was , it was a good time to change that oil - maintenance is the trick to keep the old equipment running for many years to come - keep up the good work 👍🇺🇸
One can change the oil in a diesel engine, run it for an hour, and it will be black as coal. May, and I say may, be different on diesel engines using DEF.
Evan I had a 730 Case it was a 1969 year it had a block heater it was located on the same side as your oil filter.They are a plug that you can remove and install the heater.
You need to go to Pickneyville Threshersmen Reunion and you will see row after row of restored Case tractors. My family has over 10
You need a wheeled floor jack it would help in removing and repositioning heavy parts it would make it safer
I am a fan of old tractors, and once restored it will serve you for many years,as old as it is and still runs tells you how well they are made,as with any equipment storing out of the elements helps protect it ,also for safety sake please put on some fenders, God bless

The wire connected to the bottom of the intake manifold is the glow plug. I have a tractor like it. just sayen.
I had to use starting fluid on my diesel truck with a Cummins motor when I had a sensor going out to get it started it fired right up with a decent shot. I’ve saw where people weld wings onto their grader blade to make them 7 or 8 foot blades. I run Rotella T 15-40 oil in all my diesel engines or Valvoline Premium Blue 15-40 if I can’t find the other that’s what all my diesel mechanic friends recommend
The air filter should be serviced every 50 to 25 hours depending on the conditions you use the tractor. Your best option for starting in cold weather is a block heater, ether does work but over time is hard on the engine
You need a true engine block heater. You have a oil pan heater. A engine block heater is installed in the water coolant hose. It heats the coolant and circulates the warm coolant. they make freeze plug heaters also. More work to install.
When connecting battery cables, NEVER go terminal to terminal on the ground connection. Always connect to the frame on the weak side.
It actually was a good day to work on the tractors and you were able to get something necessary done. Hope the food was good at the place you went to.

That would have been nice to get both of the tractors with the property, but sounds like you got a really good deal anyway. That Case is one of the coolest old tractors that I've seen. It looks to be when the started to become more modern being it's diesel. Never know maybe they didn't sell the other maybe they still have it?
Hey Evan there is a place called Steiner Tractor Parts, that has a spin on oil filter adaptor as well as most parts for vintage tractors. Your choice of 15 w 40 is good, we always used auto trans fluid in cold weather in the air cleaner. The old 30 weight oil is a thing of the past. Enjoy your videos and can appreciate working on the old vintage tractors, cheers my friend.
I use 30 weight in all my John Deere 2 cylinder tractors. Never had a problem.
@@andyrobinson339 that was the only oils they made in the old days, straight 10, 20, or 30 weight etc.still works well, but the multi grade oils are much easier to source in this day and age and the multi grade is much more versatile than a straight grade oil. We use 15 w 40 in all the machiner In winter when cleaning snow etc the stuff that we use is 5 w 40 the engines turn over much easier for better starting. Merry Christmas.

Ha I would remove that red band off the negative battery cable. It would be nice after the Allis Chambers repairs to clean up the Case Tractor metal shrouds and a rattle can overhaul.
Evan the best are engine block heaters that heat the coolant and not the oil. You remove a freeze plug
and they seal by o-ring into the block.
