Q&A Panel with the One and Only "Weird Al" Yankovic!!!

- Come along with me as I attend a Q&A Panel with "Weird Al" Yankovic at the Greater Austin ComicCon on July 21, 2024! Words cannot express what it felt like to finally meet this legend that was such a huge part of my childhood. He is a self-made man who carved out his own niche that spoke to so many of us who didn't fit in with the masses, and felt alone. At that age, you struggle with that, and don't know yet that being a unicorn amongst a sea of horses is actually a GOOD thing! You don't know that you'll emerge from those tough times as a stronger and better person, forging your own way, because of it. All you know at that time is, you feel like a misfit and life feels hard, sad and lonely. Al helped me see that there absolutely wasn't anything wrong with me at all, and that it's OK to be different and even more OK to embrace that! Heck, we even have the same HAIR (which was the first thing he commented on when I met him!). Al's music was always there to make me laugh, and I mean LAUGH OUT LOUD throughout the 80’s and beyond until my sides hurt! And forget about whatever had been going on in my head or my life that day. His embracing his true self helped me embrace myself too and brightened some otherwise darker days. Long live Weird Al, who I think is also wonderful Al!

I had such a great time meeting Al. I was the dork in the moose antlers that not only asked him what his favorite Retro Game was but the guy who gave him the snorkel. Such a fantastic man.
I swear his hair went fully grey in the course of a day

How many inches a year does hair grow again? Because I saw him 2 and a half years ago and his hair was this same length but fully brown.
@@nuclearcatbaby1131 I read about 6” per year. But also I think the stage lighting was harsh because his hair looks more brown in the still photos I took with him.
@marythegirlygirl Wonder if he dyed it for a movie or TV cameo where he plays an old man?
@@nuclearcatbaby1131 in the q&a someone asked how he cares for his hair and he said he doesn’t do anything, it just grows out of his head like that, albeit a little grayer and thinner. So that would seem to suggest it is natural. But anything is possible!
The generational range of his audience is something I've noticed at his live shows (seen him four times now). There's whole families that go; grandparents, their children, and the grandkids with them. It's awesome that Al has that range of appeal.

Yes. My daughter and I have seen him at least 15 times. And we've seen toddlers at his shows. It's amazing!
"Weird Al" is a bonafide legend-Hope to see him in concert one day.

So cool to hear him answer questions like this. Was a fan of Dr. Demento on the radio back in the day so I watched an episode of 20/20 on ABC in 1980 to see a segment on him and there was this young guy in his studio performing Another One Rides the Bus with an accordian, which I thought was hilarious. That was 44 years ago! Wow.

I got teary-eyed watching Al becoming emotional when that father, with his two adorable kids, presented Al with the portrait of him with his beloved late parents. 🥲 What a wondering gift that man gave Al !! So heart warming. 🩵

1985 was when 'Yoda" was officially released, but it had been played on the Dr Demento show since 1980. I was confused when I first saw the release date was 1985 because I was sure I was listening to it in the early 80s along with "Another One Rides the Bus" on the Dr. Demento show so I had to look it up.
It’s one of his early songs that took a few years to show up on an album. He performed it live many many times before doing the album recording.
@therealCrazyJake I'm sure Star Wars was quite protective of their IP and he also needed permission from the writer of "Lola".
I'm sure it helped that Al became more well-known between 1980 and 1985.

My introduction to Weird Al was in 1985 when my older sister played me her Dare to be Stupid cassette, though maybe I had seen the Eat It or Like a Surgeon videos on MTV.

The grey hair reminded me that Weird Al is older than both of my parents and I feel sad now.
@@AmishParadise27 well to be fair, I think the stage lighting was harsh and gave it that cast. In the photos I took with him the color is more brown with some gray. I think the stage lighting was a little unkind.
Why is gray hair an issue here? He's still got it.
Gray hair in and of itself is not the issue. It just reminds me of our mortality.

I worked in Radio in the 80s. He was performing in town. He called in to arrange a ride from the Airport. I hung up on him 3 times thinking it was a prank. When my boss called to ask me if weird al had called, because they could not find him at the airport. I said no. Al never told on me.

@@JMAC..I saw him at the Nightmare Before Christmas concert 2 1/2 years ago and his hair was fully brown. He was singing with Danny Elfman who was 68 and redheaded, and Paul Reubens who's the same age as Danny and was wearing a wig because he had leukemia and lost his hair but nobody knew it at the time. Anyway how many inches of hair would he have grown by then, is this even possible?!
