Do you have Buff Orpington chickens? Big, strong chickens, good layers and they will go broody to watch over your eggs!
Beautiful chicken I'll be ordering them soon.
0:48 what a jump! 😊
The Reds and Rocks wanted to jump in our laps!
I'm getting chickens for the first time and I got six Buff Orpington chicks this morning. I have them in m laundry room for now; however, their coop is waiting for them when they are old enough. Your information about the lovely birds is very helpful. All the best ...
I need to update my video on the Buffs. We had ten of them and they got a bit broody. They are lovely birds and large girls. They just got broody and decided they wanted to be better Mothers versus egg layers. We sold nine of our Buffs to people who wanted Mothers to hatch eggs. They are all out being great Moms now. We kept one Buff and she is a good layer and leader of the flock. I hope you enjoy your girls. They are beautiful birds and great lap chickens. Cheers!
They are so sweet and like to talk.
Very sweet girls. So beautiful and friendly. Thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers!
Jeff Daniels is really getting into his character for his next movie as an owner of a chicken farm.
I've never been compared to Jeff Daniels. Thanks!
I love my Buff Orphingtons, they are awesome 👌
Beautiful hens! Love those fluffy butts!
Whoops....I just asked if you had done breed reviews on another vid.....this golden mama is a cutie! @0:48 that RIR was wanting a piece of the action lol.
We still need to film a Breed Overview of the Sapphire Gems and RIR. That girl at :48 sure wanted a treat!!! Cheers!
I love the buff Orpington! Next time I get more, I'll definitely get a few.
Our girls got a bit too broody and we're taking up all the boxes. We sold nine of them to other farms that wanted to raise chicks. They are now happy Moms! Thanks for watching and commenting!
good
this bird was like yep, yep, yep lol 😀he is laughing lol
I agree. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers Alicia!
They are so cute!
They are beautiful birds!
Thank u for sharing this kind of experience . Stay connected...👍
This is the kind of info we needed when we start. Each breed is so unique. Thanks for joining us! Cheers!
What a beautiful birds
They are big, fluffy, gorgeous hens!!
Their so lovely😍
Buff Orpingtons are great birds, Buff Orpingtons and Barred rocks are probably my favorite birds.
We'll have a breed overview on the Rocks pretty soon!
They are really cute
Yes they are!
I'm just starting out in chickens, I watched this video and think it might be right for me. Where can I buy Buffs in Michigan?
I'm going to film another overview of the Buffs. They are great Mothers but didn't turn out to be great layers. I would go with other breeds for laying breeds. If you want broody hens for mothering chicks, the Buff is for you.
I came over from Yogi's channel.👍
She is a Beautiful Chicken.. I have a assortment of 10 chickens!
I enjoyed your video my new friend! 😉
Thanks Barb! I think the Buffs are such graceful, beautiful ladies. All those feathers make them perfect for a MN winter! You'll have to tell us about your girls. Cheers from MN!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm
I live in Texas! 😉
I enjoy the 2 breeds you showcase,,,,
We've got some beautiful breeds. We don't have any Buffs any more. They are great Moms and were going broody. We sold nine of them to people who wanted to have broody hens. They went to great homes! We kept one and she became part of our family. Unfortunately, while we were on vacation, she was taken from us (we think by a hawk or eagle). She is missed. Beautiful hens! Thanks for watching Travis!
Beautiful 😍 I'll be ordering some soon
Beautiful hens although they can go broody. They can be great mothers, if you will be hatching eggs in the future.
Awww I had a buff Orpington, named Luna. She was my favorite chicken by far! She is no longer with us.
I love that name! Since we have so many, we haven't named them. That helps if we lose one.....
nice stuff!
Thanks again for watching and commenting! Cheers!
Beautiful breeds
Really enjoyed watching this video
Thanks alot for sharing..
Thanks for watching! You're correct....beautiful breed!
I have four 5 week old buff orpingtons, one of which is very sweet and curious. I named her Mary, however, I think I might have to change the name to Mario 🤭.
We'll know for sure by Fall if we've got a rooster or not, and if we do, I hope he stays sweet and curious 😊
Oh no. Where did you get the chicks? We always buy chicks from Hoover's Hatchery and we only ask for hens. The hens are really big birds. They stand above all the other hens. I can't imagine how large a rooster will be! Keep us posted on your Buffs. Cheers!
You should know by week 7 if it's a rooster. The combs are bigger and are starting to pink up and waddles appear. The hens combs are short and stay yellow for awhile. Make sure you have at least 8 hens to a rooster, or he will tear them up.
@@TheOldSwedesFarm The Roosters get a bit bigger than the hens, my roo was sweet, a little protective of his hens (I didn't have enough hens for him) but not the nightmare rooster that attacks everyone---but I lost him earlier this year to a bobcat, my hens survived and ran off. Even though you buy pullets, sexing is not 100% accurate (90%-95%) and in those bins at the feed store or even from a hatchery there are cockerels mixed in. Unless you buy "sex linked" pullets or older pullets where they know by then they're pullets. I bought 7 chicks from the pullet choices at a feed store, ended up with 2 cockerels 2 years ago. This year I bought sex linked only, took a chance on 1 barred rock, she is a pullet though, was hoping for a cockerel.
@@Cindy75K We've been lucky so far. Out of over 100 chickens (so far) we've had 100% hens. Maybe I'm jinxing ourselves for our 40 chicks in May! Thanks for your comments!
Why to Mario?
Mario is videogame character.
👍🤩
You have a fantastic looking flock. What hatchery do you get your chicks from? Keep up the great work!
We have gotten all our hens from Hoover's Hatchery in Iowa. They have all been quality girls. If you're in the area, I'd highly recommend them!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm OK. Sounds great. I know they do mail order as well. Thanks. Keep up the great work.
@@kl1958 Yes. We order and they send them to the local feed store where we pick them up. Take care!
That broodiness is what holds me back, otherwise I would have a load of them.
We had ten of these. Nine were very broody after a while. The last one was a great layer and she was an incredible lap chicken.
Would have really enjoyed seeing the off-camera drama!
With as many hens as we have, there is always drama! Thank you for watching!
They are beautiful
We agree! Thick plumage and a great disposition. Cheers Kathrine!
I'm really interested in chickens, and it sounds like Orpingtons might be for me. But I live in the Gulf Coast, would they be happy here?
Orpingtons have a thick coat of down and a big coat of feathers. You will have to watch them in warm and hot weather. Hot weather can kill chickens more than extreme cold. Just be ready to give them lots of water and cold treats any day that it is hot. We ended up not liking the Orpingtons since they got broody too often and wouldn't lay. We did a video on the two best breeds for beginners. We'd recommend those two breeds. Check it out.
Thank you for the information. Could you tell me about how long it took them to begin laying?
I purchased 6 Buffs and 6 Reds together as chicks and the Reds have been producing eggs for
going on 3 weeks now and not 1 egg from my Buffs. I'm sure they will at some point.
I keep telling them rent is due but I don't think they are listening. lol
The Reds and others started here about 16 weeks. Cute little eggs and they built up to large and XL. The Buffs waited until they were about 20 weeks before we saw them laying. They are a larger bird and took longer to fill out and mature. They will get there but we need patience with the Buffs (it's hard when you want them laying!!). Cheers!
I didn't hear you mention their roosters much?
We've never had a rooster, so I can't really comment on them. With the size of the hens, I bet the roosters are huge!
Just starting my chickens for the first time since my youth, God help me cyz my kids and grands are SO against me doing this, think they want me to fail, my coop will be an insulated 8x10 metal shed, 5 nesting boxes and roosts for my birds, the yard will be contained 10x12 since we have predator birds around, hawks, eagles, etc,so enclosed top, praying no bear issues, cuz we are in black bear territory...ANY suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated, thank you in advance...anxious to see my Buffs come, also nervous cuz some want me to fail...thank you💗
If you are putting up a contained run for the hens, use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire. It is more expensive, but it will keep predators out. Chicken wire only keeps chickens out, not predators. With a 10x12 run, I'd say you could have up to about ten hens. Buffs are beautiful hens but they can go broody. I'd get half Buffs and half Barred Plymouth Rocks. The Rocks are great layers and don't go broody. We're going to get more in the spring. Good luck!!
@@TheOldSwedesFarm thank you that IS what I'm using and I increased the run yard size to accommodate the birds coming...grateful for ur response 😊
that is nice chicken
Thanks and thanks for watching!
We have thought about adding in some buff orphintons. We have a barred rock that is like a stuffy lol. My daughter just loves cuddly chickens. How did you break your broody hens? We have had 2 over the last little while.. One was just determined to hatch some eggs.. it was so cute but we dont have a rooster.. 🤣
Add some Buffs. You (and your daughter) will love the breed. We have a metal cage for our broody girls. A couple nights in the cage (with food and water but nothing soft to lay on) will break them of the broodiness. Hard (cool) floor cures the broodiness. Hope this helps.
@@TheOldSwedesFarm Oh thank you. I will try that. You put it in the coop with all the other birds?
@@chelseahappyhome Since we use the pole barn, which is large, we have the cage in the corner. It stays protected from predators but still near the other girls so they can say hello. It's on the floor of the barn with no straw or bedding. The cool floor of the barn cools their breast and doesn't make them want to nest. A couple days of this and they snap back into being good, non-broody girls! I think you can see the cage in the corner of my review of the Hen Gear Nesting Box. Hope this helps.
👍👍
Hi! Are you in MN?
Yes we are. Southwest MN near Henderson. Are you?
Yes! Afton. Near the St. Croix River. I'm getting some chicks soon and I was researching what kind to get for our "lovely" winters .. looks like Orpington is a win! You have any other breed suggestions? Thanks🙂
@@kimbean We had ten Buffs and they did great for a while. Over the winter and into spring, they were constantly broody. We sold nine of them to other farms as they wanted Mothers to sit on chicks. We keep one and she lays great. We've had 100 birds over three years. If it is my first time, I would get a batch of Barred Plymouth Rocks. Great layers, cold resistant and great attitude. Never had one go broody. Sapphire Gems after that. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers Kim!
Thanks! I'm only getting 1 Orpington and I was thinking Rhode island red and another breed
@@kimbean We have Reds. They lay very good but they get attitude and pick on the others. We won't be getting any more Reds. We've got four new breeds this year so we'll see how they do. If I had to buy again, I'd go with Barred Rock and Sapphire Gems. We will see how our new girls do. They are supposed to be incredible layers and very family friendly. Good luck Kim! Keep us updated!
when you connect with chickens...u bring your human roots to the ground.
A great comment! Our roots are sad. Our favorite chicken, Lena, a Buff Orpington, went missing a few days ago. We suspect a Bald Eagle. A tough day on the Farm.
1:28 "..very mellow birds..even temperament.."
She was lightly pecking to see if I had a treat in my other hand! They really are relaxed hens. Thanks for watching! Cheers!
