I really loved the fast paced humor and nonchalant attitude of the characters in this one, and if you ever decide to do another skit with that style or especially these characters again I think it could be really awesome! Especially for a party having a very bad streak of luck with their Charisma checks, or a party stumbling into an area WAY too high level for them. Thanks for the video! It was really fun!

Players: all of my training watching scooby doo has been for this moment
Same player: (spends entire fight on ground looking for their glasses)
I know that splitting the party can often lead to terrible consequences, but I'm proud to be able to say that my players did so a number of times and not only did it not go terribly wrong, but it actually made those sessions feel more fun and gave them a little pinch of extra realism
Absolutely agree, group stealth and charisma checks are nearly impossible, especially in a campaign at higher levels. Sometimes, its best to let those that can sneak, stealth around back, and those that are charismatic, charm their way right in.
Ex. My changeling swashbuckler rogue and bard made a spectacle in the streets and charmed their way into the kings palace, drawing attention as the monk and druid snuck around back, while the artificer kept overwatch and crowd control in the city streets. Everyone played their role so well, after a few rounds, their king was dead and we took control of the whole city.
I'm glad you had fun I just worry about the DM.
I also had a one shot with a really big party so it was fine that they split up... At least for them. They even befriended an owl witch and were able to send each other messages and they had to get the job done before sunset otherwise they would be in big troubles.
It was great. Everytime the other party was playing the others chilled in another room and we used a timer but the FRUSTRATING part was that even so they could send each other messages with *important* information they constantly forgot to write those down (one group always prepared a letter for the other group).
Everytime one half was reading the message of the other half I went quite, blinked asked "Is that all it's saying?". After they answered "yes", every single time, I screamed internally.
The stress I was under is undescribable and their boss fight was really close because they met up 1/2 h for sunset and had to improvise.
You know that scene in the shrek movie in which everyone said the other person's name?
We had something similar when someone was slowly dying because he was poisoned by spores, another person who had the cure for that spor disease, mushrooms they had to plant which could only "bloom" at the mountains because they took so long, which they need for their weapons to fight the boss and the other group obtained a broom of flying and pixy dust to remove a curse on someone who had to be tied up because he has been put under a curse that made him think he was followed by a monster and a player who has been actually cursed who was constantly attacked by wild animals. Because of that he was the one who got the broom, got the mushrooms, gave them the pixy dust and the cure for those spores flew up, planted the mushrooms "after sunset" because yes there was still light at the top of the mountain, while the town folks they got on their side after rescuing a cursed mayer in the mountain brought them time before they were able to fight the Wizard warlock...
It was CHAOS pure!!! An amazing one shot over 3 sessions (because they split the party) 1 day in play time but my spress level went through the roof.
@@rogeliog9030 I mean, group stealth is certainly a valid strat if someone has Pass without a trace and most everyone has at least solid dex or a stealth proficiency. Otherwise bad idea, and even then seriously low rolls can screw you
We once finished exploring a dungeon. Half of the party split up to loot. Ended up being captured by giant spiders while the rest of us didn't even hear them get mugged. Was fun releasing them from the ceilings once we found them though.
As a DM, i find it both difficult but also very rewarding when the party splits up and everything works out. Example: party arrived at the town the queen of elves lived to cure her poison. After healing her, party explored the town before dinner. As they prepared to go to dinner, someone said one of their relatives diappeared. So one half went to meet the queen and the others searched the town. Turns out, queen was turning her people into slaves to build weapons to start a war. Second half found her secret entrance and eavesdropped while first riled her up to give a villain monologue
"Indubitably"
“I can talk to the goblins!”
“You are deceased!”
I can't get enough of these British parodies. Just the sheer "Understandable. Shame, but understandable" levels of tolerance among the party is so wholesome and I love it.
I was the DM to this one guy, who split always the party, like 3 person one side, he on the other side, because he wanted all the glory, even the information, he didn't share anything, because "that's what my character would do" and he was a paladin chaotic good.
Guys, if you just want glory for yourself, I can give you tons of videogame names, don't bother people in D&D for that.
I *want* to judge. But I can't. I've had my fair share of different party dynamics where sometimes things like that happen. I mean, I can think of a couple of people I've played with who were *exactly* like that. But I've also seen party dynamics, sometimes, where sometimes that just happens.
Sometimes you have reckless heroes who are less hesitant about jumping into danger if they feel others are at risk (I've admittedly played my fair share of those). While others are staying back, because they're more hesitant about getting involved.
Sometimes you've got party members with differing morals. Sometimes you get information that the paladin won't like, but it's not something overly egregious, so you keep it away from the paladin. Or maybe you just know that one guy's a necromancer, and while you put up with him, you want to make sure the body of someone you found gets a proper rest.
There are ways these things can happen and it *actually* work well for a good story. Buuut people actually being gloryhogs is always a bad time.
You would think that since horror movies are a thing, and everyone knows you don't split up, that everyone would abide by the survival rules of horror films. Meanwhile:
1. Wizard gets killed by something weak and dumb
2. The rogue tries to sneak away but ends up still dying
3. The barbarian rages to be the hero yet still dies
4. The only one who survived was the paladin or cleric cuz they got god and anime on their side
There are no horror movies in Faerun.
4.5 Paladin and Cleric drown in a Pitfall trap with deepwater since they cant swim in heavy armor and nobody is there to rescue them.
Actually only cleric, because paladin sacrifised himself because he could not fit a door to escape
Fun fact: I have played a barbarian and tried to leave a final blow on the boss. I was new to this class, so I forgot to do the most important thing; Rage.
So I took 36 points of damage and nearly died. My friend revived me.
Now, in fairness, rogues are kind of designed by nature to run off ahead. As long as you play it smart... And, you know. If you get caught, you beeline back to the party to stand ground together.
But damn if I'm not incredibly confused every time I'm adventuring with a wizard who decides to wander off on their own.
The reason the Adbarian doesn’t show up is because that would split the video.
Or maybe adbarian was part of the party and the party got split, and that’s why this party ended up getting their campaign TPK’d...
I hope he’s okay.
I appreciate that this is taken as a rule for the players. As a forever DM, I get criticized for letting players do this. "Don't split the party" isn't a rule of thumb for DMs, but for players. It isn't up to me to keep everyone in a nicely packed snowball. I'm going to offer up multiple paths and the party should do its best to make good choices.
My party does small splits somewhat frequently. Two guys will scout ahead while the rest sort through some crates. These three party members go to the library to do research while those two party members go to the town hall to try and get permits to enter the off-limits part of the town. Etc.
Now that I’m thinking about it, the only player character deaths so far happened when we were all together and one of the rogues set off a trapped chest , killing two PCs and our favorite NPC to boot.
I'm part of a party in a scifi campaign that consists of my character a mercenary who only chases money a smuggler who is just starting out and an infiltrator (effectively a high tech rouge assassin) and the party split almost immediately due to character personalities the gm for that one has been more than patient especially seeing as each character ends up either fixing a problem one made or creating a mess that organically
and I'm a gm that has the party split so damn often I've given up trying to get them together as they want to follow dozens of plot hooks for side quests
But the only player death in either of those came from when the party was together
@@FentonHardyFan it comes down to the DM and when exactly the party splits, as well as the patience of the entire group.
If your DM is relatively new, avoid doing this because that can be taxing on his mental bandwidth. If it's an experienced DM, remember that any consequences for splitting the party unnecessarily are on you. Even a good DM will have to punish the party if you ignore every hint that you're running into a tough fight and promptly have half of your party split off to check more rooms.
As a fellow British who plays dnd, our sessions always end up being a "hmmm" challenge and whoever passes out last wins. What a classic, fun game

I must say, this was quite the informative video. Astounding job old chap.
"never split the party" *next week* let's split the party
I once split the party into groups of three, there where 6 of us and we each went to a different location to look for Cranko, a goblin mob boss in Ravinica, and it turned out great for me and the the two others that went with me. However the other group did barely escape their mission with their lives, the three of us found Cranko and took down his organization singlehandedly.
krenko, the goblin mob boss from ravnica. MTG. idk if that was intentional or not....
*Krenko
It's the inevitable truth after all isn't it. It happens every single time in every show or campaign. Also the new accent is really cool.
I was half expecting for the guy who went left to pull out a game breaking way of coming back to bail out his buddy lol
When we played TOA, we splited in Omu (half of group went back to the camp for NPCs) and on our way we had encounter King of Feathers. Worst day ever
This is the most British way to say “don’t split the party”
The only acceptable time for a split party is before a wedding.
So you've never had a character be assassinated before his wedding before have you?
@@airbots4789 So you’ve never had a Bachelor or Bachelorette party?
In my game, I suggested that I carry on the mission to escort an NPC while the rest of the party took what might be their only opportunity to escape Barovia. I assumed everyone would say ‘No, we made a commitment and we’re sticking to it! We won’t abandon you here!’ Or something. To my horror, three out of the other four party members said ‘yeah sounds like a plan. We’re gonna dip, good luck tho!’ Now, I’m totally okay with that, but it was NOT what I expected and I feel bad for the DM who has to deal with the consequences of my character’s hero complex.
As someone who is British, I must say, this was absolutely delightful, cheers!

*Party splits*
DM: "I see I have been given permission to do everything possible to kill my players"
I'm js, y'all. Some folks out there will take splitting the party as consent to be as brutal to your players as possible as some kind of in-game punishment for breaking an unspoken rule.
We have a rogue at the moment who constantly goes off on his own and it stresses me out so much, but he's not died yet and has in fact done some amazing things with charisma throws (including an entire bit where he spoke in the funniest french accent I've ever heard)
Idk about yall but we split the party in literally every session and I kid you not nothing bad has ever happened to us. The absolute worst thing that happened was when 2/5 of us and like 5 NPCs had to hold off a big final boss hag for a couple rounds while the other 3 members made their way towards the battle. Like 3 NPCs died but they were guards who dident even have names so yeah it wasnt such a loss
a couple of rounds mean very little in dnd with each being 6 second. Even 20 rounds is just 2 minutes and being 2 minutes afar isnt really splitting. Its more like scouting ahead.
@@elderswanderingcircus2341 Well to be fair I should give some more details. Technically my teammates and I were about two hours apart in game. They were heading towards a completely different location than to where we were. Now in our game there is a special action called sprint that you can take and it uses your bonus action and your action but it allows you to move something like 120 feet because it doubles your dash. So now our teammates were about two hours away from us however they werent going to head to us they were heading to a different place which was about 1 hour from them. We managed to hold off the fight for about 30 min and it took us about another 10 min to get to the hag. Now we had 2 rounds fighting the hag and at the beginning of the next round on her turn the hag opened a portal to the place where our teammates were going and the whole third round we were basically just following her through the portal. Our teammates managed to get there just as tha ground began because since they were sprinting what would have taken them 1 hour to do took somthing like 40 min so we were super far away from eachother when this happened. It just happened that the hag teleported halve of us to where the other halve was headed and our other halve managed to get there because of the movement speed action they could do.
So yeah we were very split up
@@Forest9528 how long is each round of combat? Because 6 second rounds would be hours of real game-time to compensate for even 30 minutes of combat, not to mention, no fight should ever have to last that long, everyone should be long dead and exhausted of spells/resources. (Also, I personally think players who do a straight dash for 30+ minutes should suffer at least some sort of exhaustion or a constitution saving throw at the very least) But of course, it's all up to whatever you and your DM all decide on what is the most fun for you guys! Definitely not trying to youtube quarterback or tell y'all how to have fun! I'm just learning and getting into DnD so figuring out all the systems and possibilities!)
@@jaseeliegames you misunderstand we were separated by 2 hours of travel and in between us there was a point that we were both 1 hour away from. Our second group realised that they had to get to that midpoint as the first point started to travel to the hag and we delayed the fight by about 40 minutes because we had to get to her. While we were delaying the fight they were sprinting to that midpoint. This was happening at the same time and so it meant that when our timelines linked up again we were 3 rounds into combat when they entered. The fight in total took us like 30 irl min - 1 hour irl.
So while we were traveling to the fight in the first place they were already sprinting to that midpoint location. Then we fought the hag for 2 rounds and she teleported us to that location and at that time our other players arrived there. This is all going on at the same time and its confusing and difficult to explain in writing but If i could draw you a diagram it would make sense
Honestly as a DM i love it when the party splits to do things. Its pretty fun to see the chaos or if they are able to make it work and come up with a pretty awesome plan.
loved the accent and roleplaying in this one, one of your best in my opinion xD
One time when we split the party during the game, half the team went up the stairs of this huge tower (which spiraled, leaving an open section that spanned the entire tower), the other half went down. The team that went up got into an encounter with some vampires, and were pretty quickly getting overwhelmed. Instead of retreating (like they probably should've done), they started knocking the vampires off the stairs into the open section so they would freefall down to the bottom of the tower, making it the other group's problem to deal with.
This becomes even funnier when played at x1.75 speed

The last time we split the party my warlock was knocked unconscious, locked in a frozen coffin by goblins and when she finally escaped discovered that the rogue and the paladin had developed a blood feud with the local barbarians. Not sure how they managed that considering we were super busy running from Wendigos at the time.
But you can Split the party And win you just need master Dm And inteligent players.
PS: this Is not a joke i'm serious
I love how 'don't split the party' is a trope, but good players and a good DM can make it work. ^^ I've a forever DM of 13 years and splitting the part 'should' only lead to a 50/50 kill of a party member. ^^ However it's still funny to see. ^w^

I watched all your videos, but this is the first one I comment on. Because I just had to say it^^
Good work and thank you for keeping us entertained :)
I really liked the fast pace and the exquisit choice of words and the moral of the story too, of course!
Splitting the party is probably the only instance in which i like online dnd more than in-person sessions.
It's so easy to move part of the party out of the voice channel while only one person goes to talk to the mayor or something and it encourages roleplay because you bascially *have* to talk about what happened, since you just wouldn't know otherwise
well done. to the point. No chance for things to get boring at all. Good D&D comedy.
Only now do I realize how much I needed to hear that accent bahaha it was absolutely beautiful! Your efforts are not in vain good sir!
Basically, either the encounters are modular and can compensate for choices like splitting the party OR you should always assume the encounters the dm balances have the entire party in mind
I hope you don't mind but I've implemented the dm and the chaps in my campaign. The dm is a satyr named Verlis Masters (Verlis apperantly translating to dungeon in german), Chaplin a always smoking dwarf and Chapman a always drinking human. Verlis is the bartender at the local guild and Chapman and Chaplin are the regulars. They're known as the hummers. For obvious reasons.
This seems to be a common sentiment but…
This is probably my new favorite video you’ve ever done. The speed and deliveries are perfect

Fucking brilliant script
Hands down my favorite skit you’ve done to date, this was incredible.
The accents and mannerisms made this 100x better. Excellent work Duke 🤣
We had a funny time when we were in an ice dungeon. I was a paladin, and there was a barbarian, storm ceric, warlock and sorcerer. The warlock and sorcerer wanted to go left, but the rest of us wanted to go right. All the tanks went one way, and the squishy casters went the other. The tanks were the ones that came into "danger", which was 3 ice trolls; we were fine. The casters almost got eaten alive by a conclave of ice toads.
Absolutely mad editing. Loved every cut.
As a DM, I love giving the party opportunities to split up realistically qnd safely in alot of overworld areas, it often leads to some really cool exploration and fun roleplay. I always try to make dungeons seem spooky enough though that they decide not to split up in areas where there might be encounters 😂
Our party was introduced to two paths to attack Terror Folk, our fighter wanted to split us up to attack both entrances, my ranger thought otherwise. We all voted on it and didn't split up
"You. Are. Deceased." Had me laughing! Well done
loved both the fast paced cuts and the accent, well done sir.
This is absolutely amazing, I love this skit so much!
