    Hey :) thank you for this video. Last night a friend found a glowing insect in the sardinian countryside. I never before seen a lucciola and thanks to this video i think i can say that the bug my friend found was an adult female that was glowing in the wild 😮🤩. I want to go this night wishing to see one with my own eyes 😁. Thank you again.
    Best regards from Sardinia

    Thank you for these videos. I have wondered for years what was needed to breed fireflies in captivity!

    Thank you very much for this information, adult glowworms love to drink water, water + sugar , water + honey, honey, some kind of solid food for bees + water.

      Yes, North-American species are known for that. Lampyris sardiniae comsumes "sweets" like sugar-water, mango fruit, beetle jelly, etc. at least as a larva...

    Great video! Very informative. I honestly never knew there was so many stages. Our fireflies (or lightning bugs as locals to my state call them in Maryland, USA) look a bit different than yours. I never knew the female was a "glowworm." I always just assumed there were males and females flying around!

    • @JexxiMae

      Photinus Pyralis...Big Dipper Firefly....that's the type we have here, Red heads!

    • @PeppersnGlowworms
      @PeppersnGlowworms  3 года назад +1

      Thank you!
      For some species of fireflies (Lampyridae) both sexes are in fact capable of flight (and light)! However, the females tend to be more sedentary. In some species they even have reduced wings and look a lot more like the wormlike larva. Those species are often called "glowworms".
      This also happens in the closely related railroad worms (Phengodidae).
      I think in the USA they are more commonly called glowworms, since species with wormlike females are less common in the Lampyridae there.
      All of those are in fact beetles...
      The famous glowworm caves in New Zealand feature a different type of insect, though...

      I once kept some P. pyralis, but I was not successful in raising them all the way from egg to adult. Beautiful animals, but their lifestyle is somewhat different from the species, I managed to raise or even breed so far.
      I may try again, after I made some progress on another species (local to my region), that may have similar requirements.
      Is Red Head a local common name? Big Dipper seems to be more often in use.

      @JexxiMae 3 года назад

      @@PeppersnGlowworms you should definitely try again some time! No, Red Head is just a name I gave them, lol. Most around this area call them lightning bugs. We usually take drives out to the country farmlands in summer to get really intense firefly shows. They're really amazing little creatures!

      @@PeppersnGlowworms I've learned a lot from you about one of my favorite parts of summer! Our area is about to be taken over by those 17 year cicadas in a week or so, so I've been nervous about that and this reminder that fireflies will also be coming around has made me a great deal happier! Thank you!
      I'm going to look into the glowworm caves, I don't think I've ever heard of them!

    Hello, how would one go about buying glow worms, and finding more info about their care?

    • @PeppersnGlowworms
      @PeppersnGlowworms  3 года назад

      As far as I know, living fireflies are commercially available only in Asia. A type of bioluminescent click beetle (Phyrophorus noctilucus) is slowly making its way into the North American invert hobby, however.
      Some care instructions for the glowworm Lampyris sardiniae can be found on my channel, e.g. here:
      ruclips.net/video/_lHOhgtRz2w/видео.html
      Those instructions should be more or less applicable to a few species of Lampyridae.
