fredric kroll Maybe. Maybe not. More to the point would be to acknowledge that Rachmaninov wrote these preludes for piano, not for orchestra. As piano pieces, do they sound "orchestral"? Personally I don't think so. Perhaps Rachmaninov thought otherwise and was happy to entrust the job to Respighi. They're OK as orchrestal pieces but I prefer both his Capriccio bohemien and The Rock, both early pieces and not all that wonderful.
fredric kroll The "Little Red Riding Hood" etude has a lot of components that are in fact suitable of the piano and for an effective listening experience, but not so much suitable of the orchestra. Nevertheless, I think Respighi did a great job, and rachmaninoff was pleased with the result
La Mer et les Mouettes 00:01
La Foire 8:07
Marche funèbre 10:03
Chaperon Rouge et le Loup 17:53
Marche 20:45
Rachmaninov: International but always very Russian. Rozhdestvensky: International but always very Russian.
Listened only to "'L'ittle Red Riding Hood" - Rachmaninov would have orchestrated it much better.
