- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- In today's video we will be repairing all the dents in the roof panel and rear body panel on the 1953 Chevy Chicken Truck project. I will show how to remove dents on high crown panels, as well as badly damaged low crown panels. Then I will use the Proshaper shrinking disk to help level out the surface.

Just an outside perspective view, sometimes, more often then not, you tend to fail to realize that you're a teacher and a leader in autobody repair and restoration. Yes we understand that you still have a long ways to go to get to where you want to be. Personally, we don't care. As far as we're concerned your like this sheet metal wizard that makes literal magic happen before our eyes as you bang on garbage with various hammers.
I think that this was one of your best teaching videos. You showed that it takes analysis to understand what you need to do. Read the panel and move cautiously across the panel bringing the damaged areas up or down a little at a time. I have a rear panel like yours but in much worse condition. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and the inspiration.
Very good at explaining dent removal and thanks for the tips . You must have worked with an old timer at some point , you are very good at your craft . Thanks for the vid , Hope you and the kittys have a great Christmas ....
I like how you call the Malibu a "Late Model" Car.
HOPE SANTA BRINGS YOU A NEW SMOKING JACKET PRE-RIPPED ALL THE BEST
Smoking jacket! Ha!
Well done young man! How much time would you say you invested in getting that back panel to that point? Myself, I'd much rather spend the time manipulating the metal than I would sculpting bondo!
Smoking jacket indeed 😂
dude, you've blown my mind again. thanks for a simple, practical explanation of the basics.
Merry Christmas, Kyle ! Thank you for taking the time to go over in depth, of the process. I greatly appreciate it. It never gets old, to see a dented up panel come out so smooth! You have mad skills. Looking forward to the next video.
Am I the only person that can see half of Jesus's face at 46.05 ish?
Funny fact Jesus did ride in back of this van many years ago. The driver liked to slam on brakes sometimes just for shits and giggles. Jesus did unfortunately face plant the back of cab once or twice. Jesus was heard to say he isn't coming to Canada next time he comes back
That is indeed funny, I liked it. I do want to challenge this as I now believe it looks more like Stanley's face who works in the sprout and Kumquat section in my local supermarket. Why he would be in the back of the Chicken truck with someone recklessly braking is as yet not known.
😂👍🏾
I have watched dozens of Hammer on & off Videos but I have never seen it so well explained. Excellent! Thank You.
Excellent tutorial........thanks.
Holy...There's a picture of Jesus on your rear panel! It's a Christmas miracle.
Oh man, I saw that too! 😅 The value of the truck has just gone way up!
Did anyone else see the face in that dent??
I was pretty sure it was The Dude from The Big Lebowski.
I thought it looked like Bob Seger
Excellent video. I appreciate you sharing your thought process during the repairs. You are a born teacher!
He takes the extra effort to make it right . A lot of guys would’ve left that inner panel in . Nice job .
Very interesting to watch, Kyle. Thanks for explaining the physics behind the techniques. Merry Christmas to you and all the best for the new year! Mart.
Hi Mart, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
Mart you can put some of those techniques on your next project after the 100 e
The reflection on bare steel was impressive.
As Gene Windfield says Every Day is A School day. Been doing this for 50 years and aaam learning from much younger guys on You Tube. Mostly Canadians, Thanks Kyle
@47:00 I saw Jesus and the devil in the panel to the right of your outstretched hand! 😮
Once you see him it jumps right out at you and is hard not to see Him. Did not see the devil though.
I didn't notice other than JC but that other thing looks like an alien!
Glad I'm not loosing my shit. It's like a x between jc and lord Carter himself!
Cheers and Merry Jesus-birthday Mr Master de Denter,, or,, Jolly Midwinter Bloodbath,
as we say around here in the northern North,, ☀🌟❄☃🎄☕🥰🍰🎄☃❄🌟☀
Paraphrasing . . . Don't let the molecules outsmart you.
I know you have done several in depth dent removal videos, but I found this one was very well explained with your drawings. Thanks for another great video!!!
Fix O Dent ... Making a dent in the dents ... Removing the craters from the moon; making a smooth surface... Lame I know but it should qualify as a comment.
From banged-up to banged-back! A refresher on dent removal with a special on the shrinking disc. Have a nice Christmas!
Kyle... never in all my born days would I ever thought I would Learn So Much from Watching Someone Knock Out Dents let alone Finding It Entertaining too!!!
Thank you for the explanation of how you tackle the dents , I only wish I could bring you my 31 Chevy , but this was helpful and gives me more confidence to try and do it . Enjoy your channel !
I was not expecting to see a Christmas miracle in a dent removal video. Most inspiring. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Cheers 🎅🎄🛻🏁🏁🎁🎀
He has risen just like the dents.
What is a dent? It's just a piece of metal that wants to stand out from the rest of the panel. I hope Kyle you will treat them kindly and with respect as you make them conform to your demands!😆
Thanks for the tips on slappers and shrinking disc's, although I still haven't a clue as to how a disc's does what it does. It will give me something to do on Christmas Day. The rear panel looks awesome, very impressive. Have a Merry Christmas yourself, make sure the cats get lots of catnip or other organic stuff, wink wink nod nod. Cats are such stoners.
Hi Kyle, that was some learning you showed us, never a boring video. The class went by fast. Thank you. Marry Christmas Kyle
You lulled me into complacency until I started to notice reflections in the former mine field panel--it became shinier as you went along and now you have a work of art! Seriously, Michaelangelo was working on his sculpture looking like some guy from the stone quarry but he was producing art--not much difference with you and your smoldering coat. I watched to the very end.
Professor, when I was young I knew a guy that restored 1939 - 1954 Chevrolets, his preferred color was black.he told me...all steel has a memory and he told me look with your fingers not with your eyes,I'm curious your take on this. Thanks in advance
No, there's memory metals specifically designed and formulated to return to shape most with with heat, but Cars are just made with basic cold rolled sheet metal..
Wow!! A ton of work in that rear lower cab panel!! As always you made it look great!!
Thanks for the tips!! Even though I have watched the other videos, it was a good refresher course!! Chop away!!
Thanks, Kyle, for sharing your hard won knowledge. This video is the best explanation of how to go about ironing out a lot of damage, in a methodical way, that I've found here on RUclips. It's also the first I've found that actually describes an order of operations, instead of just "let's bang out this dent." (UPDATE: Kyle talks about the order of operations at the very top of "How I Fix Dents:The Cheap, Easy Way." two years ago. I watched this at least twice...my parents always said "...you just don't listen..." Sorry, Kyle.)
Those kinds of videos are helpful, too, but most of us with garbage cars are dealing with much more than just one dent. I learned a ton...what a nice holiday gift! Thanks, man! All the best to you in the new year.
Love the work. learning a lot from your tutorial anyway have a merry Christmas and a new years.
That was a lot of dents. Holy crap.
It was cool watching them all come out.
Thanks for the longer video.
Merry Christmas and all the best in '24.
Another great video with great content ... on to the next one chop chop ... have a great Christmas ...
i love how you show us morons what too do to save money for other things to spend on. you master sculptor of steel you take pride in your work.
1700 Canadian ! That was a lot of slapping. but at least the chickens will have a place to rest.
Anything for the chickens
Merry Christmas Kyle, good informative video.
Excellent video, good reference to keep. Merry Christmas Kyle!! Hope your kitties get you something nice to show their appreciation!!
I enjoy watching you turn rusty, crappy trucks that would be left for scrap and work your patient metal skills on them. The results are tremendous. Looking forward to seeing the next one. Hope you are having a Happy Holidays.
Looks like its Hammer Time... You got to be old to get that one.
"you need to replace that entire panel just because it is dented"..... Obviously must have been a new viewer ;)
Excellent commentary on what you are doing, much appreciated & a nice job on that back panel.
Dig the face in the panel at 44:28 Merry Christmas too!
Super-Duper content and craftsmanship once again! Merry Christmas & Happy New Year! BTW, i like cats & dogs (just saying).
What a transformation, brilliant craftsmanship, and thanks for the great explanation of the process 👍
Thanks for the long video!
“Don’t let the metal outsmart you, it’s just a bunch of molecules; not particularly bright”. Carter’s Hair Saloon 2023.
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you Kyle.
Merry Christmas, Kyle. Great lesson today, learned lots, thank you for that
Sheetmetal has a memory... The slapper and dollies are just reminding it of where it's supposed to be.
One of your top 5 all time Kyle. Cheers bro. 🍻
Holy Crap…. There is Jesus and a dog on left of Jesus’s face at 47:02.
I see it, I see it. What does it mean? Does this mean people will do a pilgrimage to Kyle's garage?
Jesus and the devil 😳
No it’s Scott from CWM and Frankers
@@synkraut9633 🤣
Oh yeah!! Now I see it...him...them!
Thanks for the video - and The lesson! Awesome Job on that back panel! Keep up the good work.
Well that was another fine, crackerjack video chock full of insightful commentary and tips for us aspiring hair stylists. Thank you very much. MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and the cats !!!!
Another nicely done tutorial. No apologies needed for your longer videos. Merry Christmas Kyle 🎁
Thank you for this video, it was very informative.
I am working on my 1956 Mercury pick up. The roof was caved in when I got it, no doubt by a Saskatchewan Wildebeest. All my autobody education has come from you. So if I fail it's on your shoulders. LOL
Hi Kyle. I'll be watching tonight but looking forward to it. Nice work buddy. Merry Christmas. 🔩⚒️🔧
Merry Christmas Randy!
Thanks for the chalk talk on the various techniques for dent removal. It's very helpful. Moving around that back panel reminds me of a Whack-A-Mole toy.
Great tutorial. I have most of the tools but unless you know how to use them they are just ornaments taking up limited space. Thanks
Hope it wasn’t me who indicated you should replace it, I screwed mine up so bad I ended up replacing it. I had complete confidence you would get back to “better than Monday afternoon” factory quality. If I had seen your video before I went beast mode trying to shrink the oil canning with a torch I might have saved it. I got my panel from Brothers and cost me about $550 US and I live close enough to the border to pick it up down there. On another note, I see you use a drill bit to remove the spot welds, do you find it works better than a spot weld cutter? And, I see your inside lower corner panels are gone. Did you remove those when you cut out the floor?
Hi Paul, no it wasn't you haha. At least you tried to save your panel. It's better to have tried and failed than to have never tried at all. I've tried spot weld bits and in my opinion, they aren't worth the extra cost. I've never had an issue drilling spotwelds with the cheap canadian tire bits. The rear corners were completely rusted away and I will be building a completely different inner panel when I install the box sides/ 1/4 panels.
Thank you for the donation, that's very kind of you! I hope you have a great Christmas!
Merry Christmas my friend. To the cats too.
Watching you drill out all those spot welds kinda vindicates me drilling out hundreds of spot welds on my ‘58 Pontiac in an effort to gain access to get rust out from factory seams, and of course to knock dents out. Still got to weld the hood back together, been chasing a high spot in the front of the hood for a long time, and am getting tempted to cut it out and patch it. Very frustrating endeavour, and have many more spots to drill as i work my way to the rear quarters and trunk.
Kyle you have taken what we taught you to a whole new level. It is so nice to hear you are employing the “order of repair of a dent” then taking that to “in relation to quality and speed is all dependent on the rough out”! Your expanded roughout methods are now being taught to new students. Great work! Keep it up!
Thanks Scott! I should have paid more attention in school. There would be a lot less fumbling around and struggling on my behalf haha
Merry Christmas more great information, and tips and tricks.
That must have been a long day for you I definitely will have too work on being patient thanks 😊
I'll have to say I NEEDED that video!!! I consider that to be an important tool I will refer to in the future. I noticed that you seem (a little) to be left-handed, but you are actually able to work with both hands. I know there's a word for that, but I just don't like it. I know there's a word you don't like, too - it's "can't". And you certainly can. Anyways, you should be proud to work that way. I've been practicing for many years, and can usually work with either hand, but not as good when striking with a hammer or using a baseball bat. I can't wait to get started on my project car, but I'm building a workshop now, and my parents require my help very often. You certainly deserve to be proud of your results!
As someone whose only approach to fixing dents was to whack them as hard as possible with a five pound hammer, I find this pretty fascinating. It’s just unfortunate that some City Slicker in a fancy ass coat had to show it to me.
Thanks! This was a top notch instructional video. I feel as though I attended a super class in basic dent repair! The diagrams of straightening a dent were great! The camera demonstrations made the procedures clear.
My old truck has factory repairs, some of those blokes were good inside the panel shows the rough hammer marks outside perfectly straight, many years of training I suppose
Thank you very much for your time, work and editing showing us how.
Kyle You are the master body man that I have started to use when I judge how bodywork is being done. I think that Santa will make a stop at your shop because you have gave a lot of joy to us You tubers Wish you a Merry Christmas, keep on giving us these videos this coming year.
Always doing great work. No shortcuts from Kyle
Break out that slapper and have a Merry Christmas. If I were farther north on this western prairie I would drop off some Christmas cheer!
Merry Christmas buddy 🎅⛄🎄🦃🎅⛄🎄🦃🎅⛄🎄🦃🎅⛄🎄🦃🎅⛄🎄🦃
Nice work. Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas, Kyle. Hope you’re enjoying the astonishingly good “winter” weather we’re enjoying here along the flood plain of the South Saskatchewan River.
Certainly a master at work. Fun to watch.
Love the long videos
All I have to say, if the viewers didn't learn anything today, it's their own fault. Nice work as always. I'll sit through an hour of classic builds from a knowledgeable source anytime.
Top class demonstration, as usual. Best wishes for Christmas and for 2024.
At 46:47 there's a face in your metal. Looks like either Carter with a beard, or maybe Jesus...
Tip on jacket repairs...I use Tuck tape (blue or red, doesn't matter) to patch up a jacket. It lasts a long time and will keep the danglers out of the way. Don't ruin your good jacket!
Nice video! Im all Dented out!
Merry Christmas Kyle!
Hey Kyle: This was one of you most educational videos yet! You might include a screenshot of the panel(s) before and after for us dullards out here in RUclips land so we can better apperciate your skill .
Hey, Mr. Carter, Merry Christmas from Carlos and Maggie down here in PA, USA.
Thanks for the detailed dent removal tutorial. Metal shrinking is where I bring out all the cuss words. Might be worth trying a shrinking disc setup.
I’m so glad you went back to the old coat. I was getting such anxiety that I almost had to go to my safe space.
Nice job ,people don't realize what it takes time wise to fix a panel! Great video!
Really a high end professional, great work
is it me or was 46:48 a face?... Merry Christmas to you. Brilliant Carter, as always.
Just want to wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a Jolly New Year, Thank You for all the effort you put into making your channel a joy to watch.
Thank you and Merry Christmas!
THAT'S a lot of dents/dings!!!
Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day!!!
Kyle thanks for your patience and a great video as always😊😊😊😊
Kyle, thanx for the great dent removing tutorial. If you keep practicing, I think you have a future in this line of work.😮
Thank you sir for that awesomeness! Merry Christmas to you and the kitties.
Haha part of the reason the cab is looking better and better is that - along with your excellent work - you are removing more and more of the hideous paint.
Merry Christmas Kyle! Thanks for this video, I learned a lot, and bye the way, the music was great. 👍
Looks like it was loaded with rebar for 70 years, nice work Kyle
There ha to be an immense sense of satisfaction being able to take a beat up rear panel like that and turn it into a usable piece . I always admire your skills and appreciate your detailed explanations of how and why you do things. Keep up he good work and look forward to seeing how the truck progresses.
