Breaking up a coco coir brick is very difficult, even if you are going with the grain and using hand tools, but soaking it will make everything way, way easier. The downside with this method is that it's much less precise then working with dry coir, so you might still need to cut and weight first if you are trying to get to a precise mixture for your soil or growth medium.
