  • Hello friends and art history enthusiasts!
Out of all the video essays I’ve made so far, this one by far has been the most in depth, interactive, and time-consuming to make, but one I’m very proud of and will cherish.
I spent a week working at the annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival and met such incredible artists, musicians, and academics who taught me so much in such a short span of time. One participant, Imilla Skate, an all-woman skate crew from Cochabamba Bolivia, really inspired me to make this video centered on the radical weight that graffiti art holds as an art medium in the capitalist sphere.
I hope this video teaches you something and I hope that you, too, are inspired by this amazing group of women. Follow them on Instagram! www.instagram....

You are my favorite RUclipsr at the moment. Thank you for sharing your wisdom. This was super interesting. The way you choose your topics and the way you speak about them is so inspiring to hear, as a young woman myself.

Dope. Really dope 🤲🏽 it's interesting to see the correlation to the ideologies here in South Africa where graffiti is also political but not appreciated, even by the people because if how inaccessible Art has become and what Art is supposed to symbolize as a whole, despite the medium. I've also always loved the correlation between street culture as a whole and street art, the so called radicals putting a big middle finger to the rule makers and deciding how to interpret life on their own with that's available to them. I think that's the reason why art galleries look down upon it, because they haven't figured out how to commodify it for their own gain. I've always hated the commodification of Keith and Basquait as well as Frieda and Van Gogh. They've ignored all the messaging and made it about money and percieved "coolness" rather than keeping the context alive and seeing how their art is still relevant in the modern societies. Cool video.
