He said that he always wrote songs for the character and not the star, but in a much later interview, he said that he had written Carol Channing's songs in Dolly to suit her limited vocal range. I think every composer (Sondheim in Little Night Music for Glynis Johns) has had the same experience.
Aside from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Jerry is my all time favorite. His scores are just the best of the best. How I wish he had found more material during his career that he felt he could do justice too, and how I wish he had never retired after La Cage, though we do have Miss Spectacular and the wonderful Mrs Santa Claus, another favorite of mine which doesn't get the credit it deserves. This was a kind, gentle man which showed in every musical number he wrote. I have been blown away by the spectacular things you have been posting these last weeks, complete rarities, may I ask if you are accessing Jerry's private collection because none of this has been seen and I am so appreciative of these gifts you are giving us. Thank you so much for the great channel, I have subscribed and every video I watch gets a like from me. I would love some insight if you were a friend of his, maybe his last partner...I mean these are all so very rare, that is if you care to share. One thing I would love to see happen is one of the specialty Broadway labels do a 2 or 3 disc set with orchestra and vocalists of what are probably hundreds of songs in his "trunk" which he never used. My estimation is that there is a goldmine of wonderful music all of his fans would treasure to hear. I really hope when he passed he allowed for something like this to be produced. Over the years it has been a fantasy dream cd set in my mind. What he considered mediocre to us fans is probably musical gold. Of course Don Pippin would have to orchestrate. Thank you for these incredible videos.
@@oliverbrownlow5615 Some of the songs- particularly the opening- are very good. It’s a completely different show, though, and takes place in New Orleans.
He will be forever the best lyricist and musical composer in the world for me.
And Barbra Streisand did the best for that role
You are truly one of the best channels on RUclips. These archival clips are such a gem of theatrical history. I love you, I love you, I love you!

Romancin' with Stanson!
He was such a joyous human being. Thank you for posting!

This is a gem, but what is this program? Was it NYC public access? Asking for those of us who, sadly, weren’t there, but wish they had been. ;)
Great talent. Not as fully appreciated as he should be.
Maury Yeston was going to write La Cage as The Queen of Basin Street.
thank God we were spared that one...I'm still digesting Titanic.....
I understand he did write his own version that was not produced.
