You don't need too big of a space, but you need enough space to be able to move around comfortably without feeling like you're having to modify your movements/steps because you're having to make them smaller. For example, my Tap board is a little over 2ft by 3ft, but I would recommend a Tap board closer to 3ft by 4ft, because at times I feel like my board is a little bit too small. As you progress, you'll learn to make your movements/steps smaller and won't need as much space as when you're first learning Tap. Hope that helps!
@LadyVebnor plywood works pretty well. It has to be a strong enough material to be able to Tap on it. Just make sure you have some sort of padding underneath so that your knees are protected!
