This popped up in my feed today. Spent $35 on four 2x8x8s an hour later. Tonight I have a newly built bench. About 2 hours. Easy as it looks. Thanks for the video!

The only thing I'd add is a 1/4" carriage bolt on each side frame, besides the four deck screws. My wife had a guy down in town build her a couple of similar chairs (I was building the 16x36' greenhouse that summer), and the side frame soon collapsed on one, even screwed (3 screws per side) and glued. I put it back together and added the carriage bolts, and they've been out in the weather- summer and winter- here in Colorado, for years. These are nice looking chairs.

All lumber has tripled (in the UK at least), due, not only to C-19; but, the industry's biggest timber growers agreeing to deliberately stockpile lumber, forcing the market up for all of them (the major growers) to gain. :(
Can’t believe I never thought about using foam under the board when cutting! I’ve got a couple leftover after insulating my garage and will definitely use them this way! Thanks much!
Nice job on the step by step instructions! Most videos just show ppl building things without any kind of instructions. I just got done building one! Looks great and was $38. Lowe's up the 2x8 up to 8.88
Nice one mate! I made this today, took me a bit longer than 30 mins because I had to cut boards to size and then keep doing inches to mm conversions, but now I have a neat bench in my garden, in France.
Sweet little bench! Definitely see myself building some of these for the spring/summer! Might try it with some cedar as well, little more expensive but I love me some cedar!
Thank you so much rogue! This was my first project and I am so grateful. Just completed it! The cut for the back was the hardest part. The instructions, box for screws, and home depots website did not stipulate if you should predrill for screws.... I would love to hear you recommendation as I couldn't tell by video or plans. Also, do you recommend painting or staining this? I love the way it looks but it will be sitting in direct sun.
Dont need to predrill if you are using self-tapping screws. Paint is more durable than a stain, but whatever you choose will have to be applied yearly to upkeep it.
This is a great sitting bench. My son build 3 for his beneficiary for his Eagle project. The plans call for 4 - 2" x 8" x 8' boards. with careful planning you can get a longer bench out of 3- 2" x 8" x 10'. Unless your a skilled wood craftman, figure 2 plus hours for build time.
This is an attractive design, and I'm going to make it out of rough cut 2 X 10 pine, so I was drawing a new sketch when I noticed an issue on your drawings. Where you show the intersection of the short and long legs, the distance of the short leg from the ground is shown as 6", and the distance to the intersection of the long leg is shown as 5 3/8". Using the basic geometry of 45 and 30/60 triangles, the distance of the long leg to the intersection should be 12"/root (6) which is approximately 4 7/8". The 12 1/4" distance on the long leg should also be 15 1/2", unless I'm missing something.
I made this today. Thank you so much for the video. I’m a real beginner at this stuff. The only thing you might want to change is the price. It costs me $70 in lumber alone. The price of lumber is INSANE now!! #2020 #corona
This design was based off of the Leopold bench but with modified angles to allow for a more comfortable sitting angle and wider seat and back. I talk about that more in the written article but forgot to mention it in the video.
Nicely done, but here is me doing it: 1) Open cold beer from beer fridge, take swig 2) turn on stereo, take swig 3) think about it, listen to some tunes, take swig 4) grab circular saw, look for battery, and curse because I didn't charge it, take swig 5) put batter in charger, take swig, put empty in recycling container 6) grab another beer, open it, take swig 7) grab speed square, pencil, tape measure, drill, drill bit kit, and remember my battery isn't charged, curse again, and take swig 8) look at tools all laid out, reward myself for a job well done, and take some time to listen to music and finish my beer 9) grab another beer, look at battery charger, and turn on TV, put on ESPN, and finish my beer. 10) grab another beer, take a swig, look at the table, realize I need to put my two empties into the recycling bin. 11) look at charger, take a swig, and then another, and say, "meh, batter is charged well enough" 12) look for PT wood screws, I know I have a couple of boxes of 2 1/2" and 3 1/3" somewhere, take another swig 13) get frustrated looking for screws, take another swig, and then another, and finish my beer 14) get another beer, and find the PT wood screws exactly where I though I put them, but looked right past them, get frustrated, take another swig. 15) put the PT wood screws on the table and go to look for the PT wood 16) realize I never bought the 2"x 4"x8' PT wood, get frustrated, finish beer, and turn up stereo 17) go get another beer, listen to music because don't drink and drive, go inside and take a nap... tomorrow is a new day total time of project, 1 day, 3 hours, 30 mins, and 2 aspirin Of course, power tools and alcohol don't mix either, this was satire. (I hope everyone realizes this)
More tools and more time. I believe that the coated screws will last longer and keep it tighter for a outdoor bench considering expansion and contraction of the wood. Screws are easy to tighten or replace. But if old-school is what you are into do it.
My experience is that screws loosen over time, and is kept outside in the elements will inevitably rust. By contrast, glued dowels almost never loosen, and certainly don't corrode. This isn't "old school" it's just tried and true carpentry. And actually it relatively quick, as well. A practiced carpenter could replaced the screws in this piece with dowels in 15 to 20 minutes, but extend the life of the bench by years.
Actually, Aldo Leopold’s original design is much more ergonomic and more comfortable. Why so many updated designs have a vertical backrest is beyond me. Another advantage of Leopold’s design is a couple fewer cuts.
Thanks for this! I'm a newb and decided this would be my first woodworking project. I had fun building it and it came out great, with the exception of a little wobble due to some of my shoddy cuts.

TonyCanones you don’t absolutely need to but it’s probably best to take the extra time and pre drill to prevent wood splitting.

Lowe's up the 2x8 up to 8.88
2x8x8 are $7.54 at HD.
I really like the simple design. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you!
Nice one mate! I made this today, took me a bit longer than 30 mins because I had to cut boards to size and then keep doing inches to mm conversions, but now I have a neat bench in my garden, in France.
Could you share the mm conversation results? Not sure how strict round to, cheers from Europe 😀
Sweet little bench! Definitely see myself building some of these for the spring/summer! Might try it with some cedar as well, little more expensive but I love me some cedar!
I went to download the plans but for some reason can't seem to find the download option. Where should I be looking? Thanks Jamison!
@@hollewoodfurniture8190 Sorry about that, I forgot to include it initially but now the button is at the top of the plans
@@rogueengineer no worries 👍 You've got a ton on your plate I'm sure, I appreciate the plans and the extra work you put in for your subscribers.
- VERY nicely done. It has an elegance & character. Thanx 4 sharing.
i honestly didn’t understand any of his steps but it was dope
Good modification of the Leopold bench. Just slanting the seat a bit makes it more comfortable.
Bro those Diablo blades are amazing
A second comment...That was a very good, UNHYPED video. Well done.
This is great. I'm gonna put one of these in my garden and I know just the spot. Thanks!
Great! I'd love to see how it turns out!
Thanks just used the table top from and old garden table and build a bench of it with your design, 2,5 hour though.
Love the design of this bench. All those angles just pop in your head or what?? Simple sturdy and easy. Now to make twenty of them .....
Thanks Clyde! I researched what angles make a comfortable bench and laid that out, then made the legs match what we needed for the seat.
Aldo Leopold designed this style of bench decades ago and it is fact referred to as a Leopold bench.
I love my diablo blades. A world of difference! I’ve made a few of these. I sealed them and put them all around our property (17 acres). Thanks!
Last time I fell for an “easy cheap project” It bankrupted me! Damn cinderblock bench and concealment shelf😢. Cost me a kidney!
😂
Right? Probably $30 in screws for these "$30 projects"
Well, that box of screws will get you through a dozen benches.
We the people 🇺🇸
Nice job thank you for showing your talent
I'M MAKING ONE TODAY! Thanks
I made this today. Thank you so much for the video. I’m a real beginner at this stuff. The only thing you might want to change is the price. It costs me $70 in lumber alone. The price of lumber is INSANE now!! #2020 #corona
That's known as the Aldo Leopold bench.
This design was based off of the Leopold bench but with modified angles to allow for a more comfortable sitting angle and wider seat and back. I talk about that more in the written article but forgot to mention it in the video.
It looks strong, I'm going to make one. Thanks for putting this up.
Nicely done, but here is me doing it:
1) Open cold beer from beer fridge, take swig
2) turn on stereo,take swig
3) think about it, listen to some tunes, take swig
4) grab circular saw, look for battery, and curse because I didn't charge it, take swig
5) put batter in charger, take swig, put empty in recycling container
6) grab another beer, open it, take swig
7) grab speed square, pencil, tape measure, drill, drill bit kit, and remember my battery isn't charged, curse again, and take swig
8) look at tools all laid out, reward myself for a job well done, and take some time to listen to music and finish my beer
9) grab another beer, look at battery charger, and turn on TV, put on ESPN, and finish my beer.
10) grab another beer, take a swig, look at the table, realize I need to put my two empties into the recycling bin.
11) look at charger, take a swig, and then another, and say, "meh, batter is charged well enough"
12) look for PT wood screws, I know I have a couple of boxes of 2 1/2" and 3 1/3" somewhere, take another swig
13) get frustrated looking for screws, take another swig, and then another, and finish my beer
14) get another beer, and find the PT wood screws exactly where I though I put them, but looked right past them, get frustrated, take another swig.
15) put the PT wood screws on the table and go to look for the PT wood
16) realize I never bought the 2"x 4"x8' PT wood, get frustrated, finish beer, and turn up stereo
17) go get another beer, listen to music because don't drink and drive, go inside and take a nap... tomorrow is a new day
total time of project, 1 day, 3 hours, 30 mins, and 2 aspirin
Of course, power tools and alcohol don't mix either, this was satire. (I hope everyone realizes this)
Headed to the lumber yard right now
Your explanation of the calculations wit the speed square was impossible to comprehend -
There is a diagram on my site explaining this more.
@@rogueengineer Thanks for that - found them
Thank you so much for this simple design. I built one for my fire pit and will build another soon.
I would replace those screws with dowels ... if you want it to last.
That would be a great modification
More tools and more time.
I believe that the coated screws will last longer and keep it tighter for a outdoor bench considering expansion and contraction of the wood. Screws are easy to tighten or replace. But if old-school is what you are into do it.
My experience is that screws loosen over time, and is kept outside in the elements will inevitably rust. By contrast, glued dowels almost never loosen, and certainly don't corrode. This isn't "old school" it's just tried and true carpentry. And actually it relatively quick, as well. A practiced carpenter could replaced the screws in this piece with dowels in 15 to 20 minutes, but extend the life of the bench by years.
tip, bent nail far top of top back piece will hold it till you can secure it then remove nail.
This is a fantastic project, I’ve subscribed.
This is the same design that the New York State Parks Department has used for decades. I’ve always admired the simplicity and strength of them. 4:56
I'm going to try and do two of these to place side by side with some kind of little table between them.
God bless you and your family your work is second to none God continue to bless you and yours keep up the great attitude work ethic.
Actually, Aldo Leopold’s original design is much more ergonomic and more comfortable. Why so many updated designs have a vertical backrest is beyond me. Another advantage of
Leopold’s design is a couple fewer cuts.
Web site or youtube channel?
I really like this design.
Wow..beauty..thank's for your sharing..I'll practice ..
Just finished building one in Melbourne Australia. Looks great and quite comfortable. Thanks for the inspiration.
Excelente trabajo. Muy estético y sencillo. Felicitaciones
Nice to hear measurements in inches lets go back to them again instead of centimetres now we are out of Europe.great job btw cant wait to try it
Thanks for this! I'm a newb and decided this would be my first woodworking project. I had fun building it and it came out great, with the exception of a little wobble due to some of my shoddy cuts.
Building one tomorrow , great stuff 🖒
