That bedroom is not legally a bedroom. They are marketing as 1 2 bedroom, but legally a 1 bedroom. Bedroom must have proper door, a window and a closet to be legally labelled a bedroom. A room without any of those is labelled as a study, office or den, and we usually know it could be utilized as an additional bedroom if needed.
Airbnb landlords add an extra "bedroom" to increase profits. I'm pretty sure that bedrooms require a window. So if that condo was resold, it would have to listed as a one bedroom with a den.
I just looked it up. In the US, for a bedroom to qualify as a true bedroom it must have a door that can be closed, a closet, and a WINDOW! Now, I don't know if this holds true for an airbnb, but it does when selling a home.
US law requires at least one window of a certain size for every bedroom. In this particular situation, and in many AirBNBs, host typically repurpose storage rooms or r office rooms and make them as extra bedrooms, in an attempt to increase the value of their rental. Yes, its illegal.
There can't possibly be anything such as "US law requires at least one window of a certain size for every bedroom." There is no NATIONAL LAW about this. It is a matter of local jurisdiction and code, which can vary throughout the country.
1616 Walnut was an office building until fairly recently, actually. It housed some some classrooms for Temple University as well - primarily visual arts. Any apartment/condo in that building has been retrofit from the original use, which will make the layouts fairly unique, for sure.
I agree. Philadelphia looks so beautiful! I was so excited when you were here and now I'm excited to see the great videos you made. I'm reliving all the adventures! xx
On the floor plans submitted to the county Building Planning Department the room with no windows is called out as an Office/den, not a bedroom. An office/den is not required to have window exit in case of fire. The Building Planning Department does not check what type of furniture the occupents places in that office/den.
Just to be sure I looked it up but in the US a bedroom requires a window of certain perimeters to be considered a bedroom. Just like you said for safety reasons. I think your Airbnb needs to update their rules. I would think if someone died you’d be able to sue them.
Make sure you get a Philly Cheese steak sandwich while you are there!! There's a corner restaurant by Liberty Square that has some of the best Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches. Fiji water is actually sold in America!!!
I tried Jim’s on south street and geno’s. I live close to Delaware and I think the best cheesesteak place is claymont steaks in claymont Delaware. Philadelphia places are cheap on the amount of meat.
Wow, that apartment comes out to about $6,800 per month! I highly doubt it costs that much to the actual tenants (it's an apartment, not a condo, right?) So they're probably making quite a profit off of air bnb. This isn't allowed anymore in a lot of US cities, either by law or private contract.
It never was allowed as most cities banned short term rentals. AIrB&B is a front for illegal rentals, and still is. Just like Uber is a front for illegal “taxis”. Taxis not paying for taxi licenses illegally picking up and charging for rides.
Sounds like a pretty nice apartment. Personally when traveling I haven’t ever stayed in somewhere that has a bedroom without a window, but my dad is a contractor and has definitely worked on houses or apartments with similar issues which are illegal. One time not too Long ago, one of his customers had a hand rail in the house which was not secured properly and so their little kids could’ve easily fallen through. Having a room like that without a window definitely does sound like a fire hazard, but besides that it sounds really nice. 💓🌟☺️❤️
Air BnB rentals aren't always inspected by the city, so people will throw a bed in a utility room, or what's supposed to be a dining room, and call it a bedroom.
I'm betting that used to be an office building that was converted. There are hotels in Chicago I've stayed at where the room used to be a filing cabinet room.
Lia, that little bedroom was an imposter. I think it was a small area that was transformed into a place to sleep by throwing a bed in there. A Fire Marshall would not be happy.
I wish you would stay in a more rural setting just once when on your American adventures. There's much more to America than just city life. Would get a kick out of seeing you two experience a working ranch or a mountain or desert experience of some kind.
Yeah, I don't know what the zoning laws are in Philadelphia, but in Chicago (and all of the surrounding counties) STRICTLY enforce bedrooms must have windows. Our AirBNB could have a 4th bedroom in the attic space (in terms of space), but I'd have to put dormers in the room to get an accessible window in, and it's just not worth it... :) Three bedrooms is enough for most families nowadays, and there's a very nice fold-out sofa in the living room as well (which has plenty of windows....). :)
General building code requirements. "A bedroom should have at least two methods of egress, which means in addition to the interior door it must have either or a second door to the exterior. ... If a room does not have a window (and no second door), it's not a bedroom and is best considered something else."
Actually it is, many old buildings like that have fire escapes, ledges and firetrucks that can often reach many floors higher than 5, or people can be pulled into another floor by rescue equipment, but with no window, you can't get to fresh air, flag for help, etc. Windows at least offer a chance.
Having a window in that other room would not guarantee a fire escape to be on that side of the building and they exist more in 70s detective shows these days than in real life. Many buildings these days have fire supression systems. Also many windows on upper floors are inoperable for safety sake..We also know "fresh air" is probably not great to introduce to a fire. However i also bet the listing said 'sleeps x number" they rarely list bedroom count to get around that rule
I think AirBNB must have it’s own criteria as to what qualifies as a bedroom. Most jurisdictions that I’ve lived in require a closet and secondary egress for a room to qualify as a bedroom. Those rooms with a bed that y’all keep coming across would legally be called an office, an alcove, a bonus room etc Never a bedroom.
Deb K: When we travel, we often have breakfast or lunch out (cheaper), then in the evening have snacks back at the hotel or airbnb. So yes, a kitchen, or at least a fridge, and a microwave are a must.

I'm shocked by the bedrooms with no windows also. That's illegal in America too; every room needs two ways out (either two doors, or a door and a window, etc). This clearly was not built originally as residential, but a converted office building, so they are appropriating the space oddly trying to make it into living space. My guess, is that it is illegal to call it a two-bedroom officially (like when registering with the govt, paying taxes, etc). But, since Airbnb isn't regulated by the govt, they are fudging it and calling rooms that aren't tecnically legal, "bedrooms". Similarly, many residential homes have finished basements, often with spare "bedrooms" that don't qualify legally as such, but when they sell the house they can't count them, so will list as "3 bedrooms plus 2 'flex rooms' or 'finished rooms in basement". Which is code, that it COULD be used as 5 bedrooms, but not according to code. Of course, the sad part by fudging this room is that it really isn't safe, since you can't get out in case of a fire, flood, or home invasion. Airbnb really needs to better regulate this (as well as the offering pools and gyms that are only for permanent residents), and once they get a few complaints about a place, simply refuse to platform them. There's only a matter of time before someone puts their kids in one of those "non bedrooms" and some tragedy happens, and they will be held partially responsible. And as nice as the place is, I would express concerns to Airbnb for the "unsafe" bedroom and misleading information. Might earn a discount on a future stay, plus save future visitors a potential tragedy!
It was soooo good to have you in my area, and I’m really happy you liked it. Philly is a great city in so many ways, despite the haters! Your Airbnb was beautiful, so glad we got the full tour. All 50 US states require that all bedrooms have a window in case of a fire, you can not sell a house that has 2 actually bedrooms with a window and a room made into a bedroom without a window as a three bedroom house.
@@davemcbroom695 Before we moved into the house we bought, We had an inspector come and We fixed everything that needed to be updated building code wise, We had to get a new oil tank and replace the outdoor chimney ,everything else was up to code.
If you're wondering, this would most likely rent for $1800-$2200 maybe more based on location. From the small hint of location, i would assume it's somewhat farther south in center city.
People are overreacting about crime here. I grew up near Philly and Baltimore Washington, etc. And this was some years ago before it was as renovated. So there was even more crime back then, than now. But people act like if you go to Philadelphia or Baltimore you're going to get gun down in the street at any moment. That's not how it happens. If you go to a nice area there especially during the day, you will probably never see a crime in your life. So stop exaggerating. Maybe you all should take some trips to some cities once in awhile to see what it's like for yourself.
That flat you staying in is a 1 bedroom 2 bath plus den here in Toronto you also stay in them they do make 2 bedroom and 2 bedrooms plus den the den would normally be used as a home office
I don't uunderstand the no window in the bedroom. Here in Rhode Island that is TOTALLY against building codes. We have to have a closet to be called a bedroom, never mind a window!!
Usually these units are sold as a one bedroom + a den. As for bedrooms without windows, you can get away with it in some places if the apartment has sprinklers.

I don't know if you have Honeymooners reruns in the UK with Jackie Gleason, but he says "Heads I win and tails you lose." We had a foot of snow come down 2 days after you left. Odds are the Airbnb didnt advertise it as 2 bedrooms, but instead, 2 full beds. I stayed at an Airbnb in Sweden that had an IKEA type armoire/ cabinet dividing a section of the room, creating a wall for a "bedroom". But the ad for the apt didn't call it a bedroom, just 2 separate beds.
I hope you enjoyed your time in Philadelphia. I work in the city & live the suburbs. Like most cities, it even nicer during the spring/fall. Regarding your AirBNB rental: The room without the window is technically a den, not a bedroom. If that apartment was being sold or rented by an apartment company, it would be classified as 1 bedroom with a Den; not as a 2 bedroom. However, I guess people get away with calling two bedrooms because there is a bed in that den. But again, if you were buying that apparently, it would be sold as 1 bedroom & a den.
It’s common at least in large cities in the U.S. that I’ve lived in for it to technically be 1 bedroom + a den/office (and what it’s legally listed as or whatever) and then the owner or people living there make it into a bedroom. Part of the time I lived in DC, I technically lived in a “den”.
Every state has different laws pertaining to what’s allowed with building codes that are used as rentals. Pennsylvania may have much less regulation than say New York or Hawaii. Big cities and counties may have specific laws on the books as well. (A lot of the time, people just rent out their apartment or house regardless of whether they’re following the law)
A bedroom has to have a window to be considered a bedroom in US as well. If they don’t have a window they are going green described as a study or office. However, I believe in some big cities they allow windowless bedroom if the room as like a fire suppression system.
The Harry Potter Bedroom lol. I can just hear the realtor's spiel... "Yeah It's a bit pricey but hey loook...you can just turn this into a bed room and rent it out for extra income."
That's the owner's closet. Many times, the owner's keep some personal items reserved for their use only in a locked closet. So, when the owner uses the unit they don't have to remember to bring those items with them.
The 2nd bedroom In the apartment is probably supposed to be to be a storage room or even a home office or something like that so the people rent out set it up as a 2nd bedroom to make more money I’m guessing
I need blackout curtains to sleep anyway, might as well not have windows - not to mention the darkness helps when I wanna watch a movie or get more immersed in a video game.
wow i just binged watched about 10 videos of these guys im new to this channel so im like why are they not staying in the same bedroom? and then i was like ooohh!!! i get it now great vids new fan here
That’s so cool you are in Philly! You guys have to eat at reading terminal market and get a Philly taco (pizza from Lorenzo’s pizza and bring it to Jim’s cheesesteak and wrap the cheesesteak with the pizza 😂. They are both on south street!) Skip Geno’s and Pats cheesesteak, they are awful and no one from Philly actually eats there lol.
For a grand a week I would expect a window in both bedrooms. I wonder if that windowless room was originally a wardrobe or walk-in cupboard the same way that in the UK many flats that were once a one bedroom flat became a 2 bed with the kitchen being removed and then a kitchen diner with living room are created both of which are minuscule in size and infuriating.
Personally I believe next time in Philadelphia rent an apartment in the Old City neighborhood on the east side of Center City in Philadelphia. From 800 dollars up to 1,000 dollars per month I think you can handle.

Since you're in the 5th floor that window in the other bedroom won't be of much help in the event of a fire. Five floors is a long drop.
To make it legal, there needs to be a metal fire escape outside the window for buildings that have more than 2 floors.

As far as the room situation, if this is going on as you say, I hope an AG investigates these Airbnbs for their promoting practices.
Love you two. Ive never seen a room in America without a window. Maybe its a big city thing.
Some people want to sleep with no windows…most hotels offer it(depends on cities)….its called choice.
Heads I win, Tails you Lose !😁
LOL, just the residue of old make up 🤣🤣🤣 why is this relatable 💀🤣
I thought they were a couple. Welcome to Philly hope you had fun! New follower from the preston and steve show
hey! Thanks for joining us!
They are illegal in the states too. You can't call a room a bedroom if it doesn't have a window and a closet. It has to have both to be a bedroom.
welcome to Philadelphia!!!
I need blackout curtains to sleep anyway, might as well not have windows - not to mention the darkness helps when I wanna watch a movie or get more immersed in a video game.
I did not know that about UK bedrooms! So all of NYC is illegal then.😂
The apartment looks nice apart for the second bedroom not having a window. Enjoy Philadelphia Joel and Lia!!! 😊
They're already home. This was recorded last week.
there was no second bedroom, due to US building codes All bedrooms have to have a window in case of a fire, that room was actually a home office/den
wow i just binged watched about 10 videos of these guys im new to this channel
so im like why are they not staying in the same bedroom? and then i was like ooohh!!!
i get it now great vids new fan here
That’s so cool you are in Philly!
Pats is good at 3AM when you are drunk.
omg I thought you guys were together. Don't mind me, this is my 3rd vid of you I'm watching.
Why freeze? Come to my town. Honolulu Hawaii... Dont forget the sunscreen because its hot as hell. Lol.
SMOKE ALARM ON CEILING!!!!
The locked door is probably the water heater.
Not sure where yall are fi ding these places with the closet bedrooms it's odd, but qe don't have many of those buildings in my area
YOU SHOULD TEST CHECK THEM. TO MAKE SURE BATTERY WORKS. FOR YOUR SAFTY!
All 50 US states require that all bedrooms have a window in case of a fire, so that room was illegal like Joel and Lia said in the video
Personally I believe next time in Philadelphia rent an apartment in the Old City neighborhood on the east side of Center City in Philadelphia. From 800 dollars up to 1,000 dollars per month I think you can handle.
