7:12 The automatic gearboxes of mercedes ‘learn’ your driving style. If you are an aggresive driver, it hilds the gears longer and shifts faster etc. If you are a calm driver, then it does the opposit. It optimizes itself for your driving style

Hey JJ, I am very heartened to learn of your excellent service with the Mercedes specialist. Just goes to show, you can still get reasonable fixes done on a prestige marque. The CLK is a gorgeous design, and I agree the CLK exudes old-school quality that is rapidly disappearing. I love my CLK280 Cabrio that's for sure. Great to hear your CLK is still going strong and that you still enjoy it after 2 years JJ! I've got a 2003 CLK320 and loving it too, but with 150,000 miles it's getting a little tired and was thinking of upgrading to a 2009-2011 E350 Coupe (C207 generation). Do you think those are a decent and reliable car? Cheers, Serge

    • @JJonCars
      @JJonCars  Год назад +3

Cheers Serge! I like the look of the E-class coupe, but I haven't driven one. It's got the frameless, pillarless doors and seatbelt extender which is cool. I've driven the C-Class coupe of that generation and they are well put together, nice cars, and the E-Class is based on the same chassis. So I would expect it to be at least as good as the CLK overall, more modern but with slightly less retro charm.
I don't think it would be a bad decision if you buy one that has been looked after :)

I've had my 2005 Clk 200 Convertible for just about 5 years now, before I always had BMW E38's and E46's, all good cars, but there is something about the CLK that I really enjoy driving. Over the last 5 years I've had to change the usual consumables (Discs, pads, service etc). Today I changed all the tyres as they were over 5 years old and showing signs of wear and tear, then put through MOT, passed, no advisories. My only niggly thing was the glovebox, which I repaired and the rear whell camber ajusting bolts are seized, i'll get to them when I eventually do a preventative shock/spring change probably next year.
JJ is right, if you worry about fuel consumption, this is not for you, i'm used to it as my other car is a Nissan Elgrand E51.

One of the covers is just starting to get a little moisturized in a typical area so I'm expecting it to start any moment. That's the worst it gets with these M113's. They are indeed tanks. If you think about it, these engines and 5-Speed transmissions were used in cars that weighed almost double the weight of a CLK 55 AMG. Heck, the 5-Speed automatics were even used in the Merc diesel heavy duty vans.

It will be more expensive to run than a typical small first car, but If you can afford the insurance and fuel for it, that isn't a problem. It may also be more expensive to repair and service than other cars, but it depends what you're comparing it to. For all I know your other first car option might be a Range Rover :D
It's a long car - makes manoeuvring more tricky than a small car, but if you're a confident new driver then that shouldn't put you off.
So it depends on you and your situation really :)

      Hi Malcolm. Thank you.
I am running my car on E10. According to the government at least, the 200 CGI is the only CLK that needs E5, and the CGI is definitely a different engine to the Kompressor (they didn't sell the CGI in the UK anyway as far as I can tell). So your car will not be a CGI. The consensus on the forums/facebook groups etc is that it's fine to run the car on E10, and that lots of Europeans have been already doing this for a while. I have certainly not noticed any issues (and the MPG seems the same too - I know some people said that it can be worse with E10). Hopefully this will put your mind at rest a bit :) I had the same concerns until I found all this out.

@JJonCars I forgot a couple of things, oil leak from cylinder head, bank 1, looks scary but is a £3 bung at the end of the head that needs popped out and replaced.
Oil in coolant - traced to oil cooler gasket failure, sure the gasket was inexpensive and you can replace it without draining the power steering fluid reservoir that the EPC tells you to do. Not hard just takes time.
Small coolant leak from a hose, replaced at dealer and the stalk failed on me so no washer fluid could be dispensed. Replaced at dealer £220.

Love a big Benz coupe, I had a E220D Coupe (2016) until recently and a 2002 CL500 until it failed it's MOT beyond economical repair.
I'll get another at some point, but quite enjoying my cheap to run daily at the moment so if I grab another it will be a second car and the CLK 500 is one I'm considering, I liked the E Coupe (CLK) chassis more than the CL which has the super complex ABC suspension 😅 but that V8 makes so much sense in those cars. It just works.

Batteries on CLKs last a long time. My 2004 CLK's battery lasted from when the car was new until when the car was nearly 17 years old and, even then, I think that it was the low usage in the pandemic that finished it off. In contrast my Range Rover Evoque eats a battery every 2 years despite regularly doing longer journeys than my CLK.

I also think that one factor may be that more systems seem to come to life each time I just open the door of the Evoque to put something in the car compared with when I do the same on the CLK. Other modern cars are probably similar to the Evoque in this respect. Do batteries last as well on the more recent Mercedes models I wonder?

I've had good experiences with the "XTOOL Anyscan A30M" OBD2 scanner when checking my CLK 200 Kompressor. The scanner supports many car brands but has a dedicated Mercedes profile. It reads all ECUs (including the one in the instrument cluster) and reports any faults in clear text (not just codes). It supports actuation of devices (such as turning the wipers on) and has a few more tricks upon its sleeves; for example reporting live readings, e.g., the steering wheel angle. For some live readings, it needs manual refreshing to pick up on changes, which I don't think should be the case, but overall it works very well. Apparently iCar also make ODB2 scanners that work well with Mercedes cars. Long story short, you'll need the full-blown Xentry Benz diagnosis system if you want to reconfigure your car (e.g., telling it that it should not display a "Phone" option in the menu), but for regular diagnosis purposes scanners like the A30M should be just fine.
