18:44 Me Too! I didn't even know about the weird black triangle od death thing! I thought it was always a glass cone! When the characters are picked up by the black one, it looks kind of silly. I'm suprised no one has done anything about the awful music post Peter Howell. Dominic Glynn's score's are bad enough but the guy who followed him made Sylvesters tenure appear devastatingly cheap. A silent movie pianist would have sounded better. lol
Jon Pertwees Doctor was so hard he could take a Sontaran directed energy beam to the face, but if went on for too long he would start feeling uncomfortable.
Seeing the Doctor actually falling in Logopolis is a surprisingly powerful effect. Really nice. And the new Mara shot works very well. As for my pick for CGI treatment... Invasion of the flipping Dinosaurs!
Yeah the story before the snake is really good and then in the original version a really good story ends with a large inflatable snake. Im so glad we have the CGI version now.
But that was kinda the point. It wasn't a real snake at all. It wasn't really anything at all! Just a monster of the mind. So it ended up looking like it was made out of paper or somesuch.
I’ve been hoping Silver Nemesis would get the CGI treatment for years. If you watch the American documentary about the making of it, the VFX team indicate the intention was always to have a flying energy bolt come out of the Cybermen’s guns. Clearly the budget led them to think the practical effects would have to do in the end.

It's worth remembering that back in the day when these were first aired we all watched them as kids on cheap, small-screen, black and white box TVs. The shonky special effects didn't matter because the picture quality was, quite frankly, atrocious. We didn't realise this at the time, of course, simply because we had nothing else to compare it to. Thinking about it now, this may have had something to do with the decline in popularity of the original series from the eighties onward. As low cost, reasonable quality, colour TVs became available the horribly cheap production standards became more obvious.
It didn't help that the production values in the 80s weren't so much better than they were in the 60s, especially compared to contemporary sci-fi TV shows which had almost movie-level budgets.
The picture quality was probably better back then. We saw transmissions of the original 2" video tapes. What we see now are film transfers from the original video tape which has in turn been transferred back to video tape. You lose picture quality on every transfer. Remember how bad videos looked when you made a copy of them.
This is the most sensible comment here, you're 100% correct and I was alive to witness it. Put kids in front of a screen on a Saturday early evening back then and they loved it no matter how naff it looks today. It was and is classic TV. This remastering is just an act of vandalism, probably primarily to milk the cash cow just a bit more and sell more product to a millennial audience who think this kind of act is actually improving rather than harmfully adulterating something precious and unique. When colour TV became more widely available from the mid 70's onward we had no real improvement in special effects when series such as Blakes Seven came along. Still beloved by many who watched it back then, it doesn't stand up to todays TV production standards. Try to enjoy these Historical Gems for what they are rather than what you think they should have been.
We were also used to other shows with effects of the time - and using imagination on, eg, Thunderbirds. Of *course* we could see the strings but that was the whole point, it was storytelling. It's worth looking at something like I Claudius - not because it's a good comparison with DW but as a reminder that TV was once about bringing a theatrical experience to the screen rather than the more cinematic experience we get today. I love the cinematic experience but I do accept that some of the apparently stilted performances and yes, effects shots that give you an idea of what was happening rather than convince you, were part of the TV landscape of the day. In terms of the next story to get a major CGI upgrade I'm going to stick with predictability and go "Invasion of the Dinosaurs".
Thank you for doing this video. It absolutely needed to be done. I've searched out videos comparing the new effects to originals and it's a nightmare finding them on RUclips. To have them all in one place with commentary about production details is fantastic. You've done fandom a great service. And, yes PLEASE Invasion of the Dinosaurs! Second on my list is Underworld. So much CSO cleanup could be done for that one!
The only one I can't enjoy too much is "The Five Doctors" but that has to do more with the editing choices than the effects. For instance, when the Cybermen ambush the Doctor and the Master, the musical cues no longer match the action as well as they did in the original. The extra shots also disrupted the flow of scenes (like the Castellan operating the transmat during the aforementioned ambush). But I also preferred the original Time Scoop and TARDISes departing. I always assumed that Rassilon did something so that each Doctor (along with their companions) could step into their _own_ TARDIS and he was able to do that because the TARDIS operates outside normal space and time. It's more "timey whimey" that way.
@@SegaNintendoGuy64 Why would you even say such a thing? They just want to make you feel that we had an inferior product...when we know that what we had, warts an' all, was far superior to anything around nowadays. They think they can walk all over our history, our memories, our childhoods...they're actually just jealous because we lived a time they'll never know.
JamesTheBrony/JTB The best thing about the CGI is that it’s optional (unlike a certain other space series *cough* star wars *cough*). If you like it then turn them on, if you want to watch it without the effects in the original format then you can do that too, it’s a great way to keep everyone happy.
0:29 Wow, the new effects in "The Dalek Invasion of Earth" look like they conceivably could've been the original ones produced for the serial. They did a very good job producing contemporary-style effects.
At the time of Invasion of the Dinosaurs there was talk of me redoing the dinos. There's even a test shot snuck into one of the documentaries ('The Ties that Bind' on the 5 Doctors I believe). But it was decided that the money would be better spent on colourizing the first episode. I was also asked if I could do some work on the Murka. But I suck at organic CGI.
Whereas I'd say that episode one in black and white isn't quite as jarring as some of the dinosaur effects. I genuinely think that the dinosaur effects have caused this story to receive a more negative reception than it warrants as, in my opinion, it is one of the best stories in the third Doctor era. A true instance of effects letting down a superior script.
Okay, now I have to rewatch that DVD to check! As for episode one, shame about those pesky missing blue chroma dots. I’d love it if the eventual Season 11 Blu-Ray somehow managed to do _both,_ but it seems unlikely to me. Color recovery’s definitely come a long way though- I was absolutely amazed to read in DWM that “Planet” 3 on the S10 Blu-Ray was based solely on CR! The thought of “Ambassadors” or “Mind” looking that good...
Oh the Myrka! Some things require too much fixing! I think the whole scene (including the lighting) would need massive work, it’s the only Classic series effect that I feel genuinely embarrassed watching.
If any story of the 1980s desperately needs the optional effects treatment its Ressurection of the Daleks. I cannot understand why it was never done for the special edition and I desperately hope when it one day might be out on Blu Ray it gets that treatment Daleks firing their guns with no lasers. Lightbulbs apparently killing people (the Dalek Trooper and prison ship staffs weapons). Its almost as if the Sound Fx guy did all his work and the guys in the effects lab/editing suite fell asleep. I'm 99% convinced Resurrection of the Daleks might have actually gone out to broadcast unfinished because there wasn't enough time to add the effects post production. I'd love to see Resurrection get that extra treatment. It desperately needs that little extra touch with some lasers and updated computer screens.
@@raptorfae.6645 yes please. I'd actually end up putting Resurrection of the Daleks on blue ray inside the dvd case so it sat happy with all the other dvd releases
Maybe we’ll even get actual footage of Katarina during the duplication scene instead of a still photo with a wavy effect! Like, not blaming that on the original production team, there was literally no footage to use at the time, but still
Nothe EXACTLY! Lucas took it way too far. REPLACING ROCKS with CGI rocks? He actually managed to ruin great elements or scenes by doing that when it simply wasn't needed. Good example of updated effects for Star Wars? Improvement to Cloud City shots to expand the scale and look. Key is to keep it within the context and FEEL of the era or what would've been possible, as the video says itself, with a bigger budget. Still ironic that some practical effects from 30 years ago still out class CGI ones. Like the alien from 1982's "The Thing". Expertly done. Even older? The animation of the creature from "Forbidden Planet". Considering the year that was made it's truly incredible what they achieved.
@@samuelmeasa9283 Star Wars Christmas Special no cocaine was harmed in the making of this family 'entertainment' with one of Chewie's family watching alien porn... BIG IRONY: They had ALL the SW cast. If done now? They'd make it a between films TV special. Even Marvel didn't do that with their shows despite having several on at the same time. Odd.
I actually like a lot of the special edition improvements, for example, most of the ESB changes are much better in my opinion. I think people hate them, because they replaced the originals, rather than being released alongside them, like these Dr Who edits.
Some of the model replacements aren't as impactful as the originals, they had a very charming tactile feel to them. The little aesthetic changes are really good though, screen graphics, explosions, and fixes like the Mara really help enhance the story's impact.
That's where new updated effects really come into their own don't they Andrew? Like ''Invasion of the Dinosaurs'' when effects fail expectations or as with "Terminus" run out of cash.
It wouldn’t take too much, most of the original effects work ok, just the T. rex and the fight scene are pretty awful, but with a few tweaks and some new model/puppet work, maybe adding some extra motion to the original ones and stuff like shadows and such, I think they could much improve it. Oh and change the pterodactyl sounds PLEASE! I personally wouldn’t want them all re done with Jurassic Park style CGI as it would be too jarring.
@@Lumibear. Quality rod puppets that have some animatronics would be the best way to go with IOTD. CGI just wouldn't wash with the way dinosaurs were perceived in 1974 - lumbering monsters. If they could just get the dinosaurs as good as the Drashigs from 1973, that would vastly improve the standing of the story..
Invasion of the Dinosaurs for sure. I love the story myself but the Dino models are dreadful. new CG would allow it to be appreciated by many as I did with Fenric
@@howardnwhite that's twice I've seen a version of this comment! And I'm intrigued. Vimeo is probably the place. I see Star Wars edits there which would never last on RUclips. So. It's time. Come on, now. Etc... ;)
jesus christ, is that black obelisk in Five Doctors was for real? That's and OG effect? I really thought that cone was the original one and looked outdated, but this one... JEEZ
I would have rather they enhanced the original rather than replaced with the 'swirl' I also liked how Rassillon originally made the TARDIS divide up and that doctor 4 bounced back to a different place given he's been "stuck"
Nice to see these side-by-side, and finally have a glimpse of how the cardboard Master was handled! 00:38 What I particularly like about the 'Invasion of Earth' CG is that it wound up matching the ships we see in the RTD era. 18:12 The "new" effect (the SE is now twice as old as the original was when it came out) is well made, but the design is much less ominous than a patch of black nothingness. A modern rendering of the original idea would be pretty effective IMO. That said, me main issue with the SE is that the extended bits don't add anything 'cause this wasn't a case where cutting it to the right length for broadcast was an issue. You can even hear Peter Moffat complain about it on the Two Doctors commentary (end of ep 1 IIRC).
Great video Josh I didn't even know the BluRay Revenge of the Cybermen was so upgraded...I will have to watch my copy now! Yes Carnival of Monsters needs a definite CGI work over. Mate you are doing an awesome job...these videos are fantastic! I actually feel they are well within the spirit of the BBC extras on the DVDs....keep it up please.
Four seasons I want to come to Blu-Ray: Season 25 (Sylvester McCoy Season 2) (With the extended version of Silver Nemesis) Season 7 (Jon Pertwee Season 1) Season 11 (Jon Pertwee Season 5) (With updated CGI/proper recolour on Episode 1 for Invasion of the Dinosaurs) Season 13 (Tom Baker Season 2) Great video! Classic Doctor Who is my favorite sci-fi show, so learning more about it is always a joy.
I hope that Silver Nemesis gets the CGI treatment, because as much as a lot of the effects hold up very well, especially Ace taking on the Cybermen in Part 3, the Cybership in Parts 1 & 2 and the comet itself look pretty bad. Invasion of the Dinosaurs is a given, but they’ll need a substantial budget for them, plus they would have to work on Part 1’s colour as you’ve stated previously it doesn’t have all the chroma dots. They’re are some where very little would be needed in terms of CGI, Rememberance of the Daleks is one, all that really needs doing is updating the shots of the Hand of Omega destroying Skaro. We can only wait and see to what comes next, already got my Season 10 & 23 box sets on order to join season 12, 18 & 19 on my shelf.
Tbh I always watch the originals. I'm not sure why, it just feels nicer to watch the original and to see how they did effects. Although I'm the same as you with the 5 Doctors, I watched it originally with the new cgi and didn't realise it was the cgi version for ages, I thought it was the original! Great video by the way👍 keep up the amazing work
Wish I watched your content ages ago I’ve been looking for these fantastic comparaison videos of each edition! And I totally relate to loving the special edition of 5 doctors more than the OG since it was the one I watched first and just got used to. Love the content man keep it up ✌️✌️✌️
At least you have the option to choose which version you want (I'll always prefer the original effects). Hate when you don't get the choice, like with the Star Wars trilogy and Lucas' THX1138. Even the Original Star Trek on Netflix only has the CGI version option.
THIS!!!!... 100% THIS!!! These new "enhanced" versions of classic Who, exist (and prosper) in direct correlation to the redundancy (and commercial antiquation) of the original transmissions. Networks will always opt for new CGI versions rather than the original FX. There were years when the original broadcast version of The Five Doctors was commercially unavailable, because it was not carried over in the BBC's packaging of their re-release, or sold for broadcast to networks. Classic Who needs to be preserved and respected... not retooled, re-edited or altered. It's an important part of TV history. Let's respect it.
I think it'd be cool if star wars had an options menu where you can choose the effects, like, say you want the updated X-Wings but no Jabba. Sort of like the options for Doctor Who, but on a higher level, since Star Wars has gotten new effects multiple times.
Another good video. I think my favorite of the ediys that I've seen is 'Earthshock'. The final scenes are more nerve-wracking. The one I'd like to see get the CGI treatment would be 'Terror Of The Zygons', but mostly for the Loch Ness Monster shots.
Definitely stories where there is only one big flaw, but such an essential part of the story. Like the monster in Caves of Andrizoni, if fixed it would make it into a story with no flaws.
I've been thinking about this since the announcement, as well as the missing "I'll take you to Blackpool" line (unfortunately seems to be lost to time)
I really, really, REALLY want CGI replacements for “Stones of Blood” Not only is it the 100th serial, but the orgi, Megara, Hyperspace and the Cliff scene all desperately need a tidy up. I also think it could be edited into a feature length version, with some cuts. I honestly think some improved effects could really enhance this story, as I’ve always thought this had one of the best stories for the classic series, but the Orgi being styrofoam ruin it all.
I enjoyed that walk down memory lane, Josh! I commissioned Mike Tucker to do the update on Dalek Invasion of Earth and it remains my favourite of all the stories with updated effects. Mike totally understood my brief and we both shared a vision of how the show might have looked given a movie budget back then. We were particularly keen to use 2D animation on the saucer moves (Earth Versus the Flying Saucers) and sparks from a real angle grinder for the heat ray effect (The War of the Worlds), coupled with the van glowing before exploding (The Day the Earth Stood Still). The model nuclear reactor still sits on my bookshelves at home. :)
The Sylvester McCoy stories worked really well as movie length edits. Pretty sure when Season 25 comes out on Blu-Ray we’ll get extended edits of those stories.
Logopolis - I liked the touch of having Tegan, Adric and Nyssa's line of vision all being synchronised as the Doctor fell from the radio telescope, with little touches of widened eyes and open mouths.
I feel like that's a silly opinion stuck in the past Without those updated voices the day of the daleks Would be dreadful because of how dreadful those voices are
I'm normally not a fan of this sort of thing happening with classics (CGI facelifts), but looks like they handled it well and kept it fitting with the original vision and style pretty well. Another good example of doing it right was what was done with the original series of Star Trek. I think this is also good in helping newer generations discover and get pulled into this wonderful series.
I was browsing the Doctor Restoration team website just now and you know what I just thought, you should do a video Josh, like this one, that goes through and lists what survives of the original prints/negatives from the location and special effects filming, that'd be a great thing to watch.
Great video, I love it, and I look forward to the re-release in 10 years with upgraded CG used to replace Mawdryn Undead with the correct title of Terminus. ;)
@Josh, you sincerely got my hearty laugh, like, and subscrube plbased on your audio flub at 5:21! I had a good laugh when I rewound and turned uo the volume a little higher! Very nice! XD!
@stephen noonan LOL, that description (''mouse in a dress") REALLY made me laugh....and I say that as someone who has been in love with ''Pyramids of Mars'' since 1975! :D
A really nice interesting documentary although it does spoil things a bit because it shows stories that I have not had a chance to watch on DVD or Blu-Ray yet! Ah well, as the good Doctor once said, "Can't complain, we live in an imperfect universe!" And yes, I would definitely like to see Invasion of the Dinosaurs get the CGI treatment (how about it, BBC?). Those poor dinosaurs in the original look like something out of Andy Pandy, rather than One Million Years BC (1966) or The Valley of Gwangi (1969), but it was NOT the special effects technicians fault (which were handled by good old Cliff Culley). Yes, CGI dinosaurs would brighten up Invasion of the Dinosaurs considerably.
Every now and then, I come back to watch this video again, before deciding on a CGI enhanced story to choose from my collection, so many thanks for getting this out there, it’s really great.
One of the things I always say was special about watching all of classic who is that it is like watching TV grow up - updating the special effects would take away from that experience in my opinion. That being said, they do often look engaging - and at least it's a choice which version you can watch.
It's a "choice" FOR NOW... But everyone I've ever encountered working in the industry, have always said that these bastard CGI revamps of beloved films & TV shows will only be available as an "alternative". That was touted in regards to Star Trek's CGI makeover. It was true at Lucas Arts when all the Star Wars films were "improved". It was also said about The Five Doctors CGI revamp, which went on to replace the original and be the only version of that anniversary special that was available commercially. The basic truth is that these new versions do exactly what they were designed to do... they exist to be exploited commercially to the fullest extent possible. They are deemed more commercially viable. That's why Netflix has chosen to only broadcast classic Star Trek, which features the revamped CGI FX, and it is also why George Lucas intentionally inhibits circulation of his original (unaltered) Star Wars films. These revamps are made to be pushed forward commercially. The moment they escape from the bubble of "special features" and start being sold for independent broadcast, they become an archival crime against the artistic integrity of classic Doctor Who's position in television history... The CGI revamps are pushed forward and the original broadcast versions become secondary relics, which ultimately, is why the revamps were created. They do what they were de$igned to do.
@@BabetteBombshellOfficial Star Wars's new effects were never supposed to be an "alternative", Star Trek's was always meant for rebroadcasting (the original is on the Blu-Ray) and The Five Doctors' point is moot since they have released the original one since.
Love this video-comparison!! It's hard to believe you're a ''real'' 'Doctor Who' fan though...you're far, FAR too positive, upbeat and enthusiastic!!! ;) More please!!! :D
For the most part, I still prefer watching the original versions and am very glad that option still exists. I view the original effects as part of the show's history. While some of those effects may seem pretty cheap by today's standards (and unintentionally amusing), a lot of them were quite creative for their time... especially considering the extremely low budgets they had. Also, many of the CGI replacements feel out of place... giving us something that obviously would have never been achievable when the program was originally made. As such, they often stick out like a sore thumb. (Enlightenment is a good example.) The best CGI is something that looks like it could have been a well-done period effect, done so subtly that you might not even notice it at first. The new effects on Castrovalva are a good example. Warriors of the Deep has been brought up in this thread as needing new CGI. For me, CGI could do nothing to improve weak stories. If anything, the Myrka is probably the most entertaining thing about Warriors of the Deep, even if for the wrong reasons.
Replace the Rat... with ROLAND RAT and Renta Ghost? I'd pay to see that LOL Zak, I just had a thought: one special effect that would enhance the story historically? Scenes of industrial London? Like boats, ships, fog and other things to give a feel of the era? Done in the same style of the story but giving a true sense of life in the hustle and bustle of my Great GrandFather's time. That's one of the biggest benefits people over look. Enhancing the vision of the original script or making it more visually authentic? Then it's within the context of the story not merely an effect that sticks out like a certain *coughs* blue Genie in a remake of Aladdin. For once I thought it WAS un PC to have a BLACK guy play a Arabic character. But as Josh would say "That's just my personal opinion".
I watched a recent copy of that and they’ve already fixed it with picture regrading, so you can barely see it! In the commentary, one of the chaps who made it said ‘I realised later what the problem was, it wasn’t the costume itself, it was just too clean and dry, it looked fluffy when it should’ve looked wet and greasy, we should’ve dirtied it up a bit’ or words to that effect.
@@EditorDudesPlayList I love the name :) Oh what's wrong with the rest of RG? I read somewhere there was a problem releasing one of the seasons because one of the man cast has refused to give his permission? The series sends shivers down my spine not for being scary but rather feeling the distant childhood memories gives me. Hard to describe. Curious.
I've always thought kindas updated effects look awsome! I think I'd quite like to see Horror Of Fang Rock get some updated effects at the Rutan looks a bit dodgy and weak when it's on the stairs, as well as the shot of the "shooting star" towards the beginning.
Everyone is talking about their favourite CGI effects but no one is talking about Josh’s choice of fonts for the titles, the fact he used the Battlefield game font for Battlefield makes me smilie.
Everyone talks about an Invasion of the Dinosaurs CG replacement but am I the only one who wants to see one for Underworld? Yes, the story will still suck but it will be interesting to see what it looks like with good green screen effects
Really glad they let this go back up as I was especially looking forward to watching it. Thanks for all your hard work putting this together! I've wondered how the differences between the original effects and CG would look side by side for years and this comparison is excellent. Love the originals but it's nice to have the option of CG / more updated effects and to know about all of the hard work that went into them. Honestly I found the "future city" effects in Day of the Daleks the most jarring but still interesting. I would also have Invasion of the Dinosaurs at the top of my list for updated effects. As much as I love Classic Who over any other Sci Fi series, the effects in that serial look like what Sid and Marty Krofft threw away for the original Land of the Lost. I've also always felt for a show with a Time Travel element, dinosaurs in Doctor Who were always woefully untapped. We did get one decent episode in the newer series, but after 50+ years of time travel you would think we'd see a BIT more dinosaurs. Ah well, fingers crossed.
Fascinating! I haven't watched old Dr Who since it was first broadcast on the ABC (repeatedly ad infinitum) during the 1970's & 80's - therfore I kind of know each episode you detailed really well. Fantastic to see the love and the passionate effort applied to bring the show up to a standard which respects the original, though corrects the vast array of poor technology available at the time of the original production. Mind you, at the time of original viewing, the suspension of disbelief was simple to achieve while watching one's favourite staple of science fiction!
I think Invasion of the Dinosaurs should be given the CGI treatment. The original dinosaur effects were a product of its time, and so does the dinosaur designs.
I do appreciate the work that goes into making these effects, but I will always prefer the original, no matter how bad they may look - they are mirror images of the time and circumstances under which these episodes were made and I think this should never be forgotten either. (All in one I do like practical effects more than CGI, no matter what film or series they appear in).
I'd like to see Time Flight get the CGI treatment because... Well, it's Time Flight. But maybe Warriors of the Deep too. The model work in that story is fine, but if they could put a new CGI Merka in place of what we ended up getting and maybe add in some laser shots to the weapons, I'd approve of that.
Maybe also darken the picture to better match the original intentions for a dingy-looking, running-on-fumes facility. And reshoot the karate-kicking scene to replace it with something less ridiculous.
That's a hilarious idea. Let's replace the CGI with cheap models and rubber monsters just like Classic Who. Fans would immediately flock to the older, five-dollar-budget look, while us older fans stare in disbelief. But, hey, why not?
Great job and no time being wasted. The Resurrection of the Daleks should be fx revised. Most great yet low budget sci-fi classic especially Doctor Who always used flashlight for weapons and the sound effects is what give the life. I want to see a actual energetic blast between gun fights from the Lytton’s Mercenaries vs. Space Station Crew. Of the 80s Dalek series, I think it is one of the better ones!!!!
In my opinion the worst special effects shot in Doctor Who history was the evil spinning triangle things that kidnapped the Doctors in the original broadcast version of "The five Doctors", but the best special effects shot of classic Doctor Who has to be the space station from "Trial of a timelord" so I hope they don't bother with updating it in the blu-ray release because it's so good.
A side by side comparison of the CG replacements in Doctor Who is something I've been hoping for for a long time, thank you for putting this together! As for me, I think Invasion of the Dinosaurs needs the treatment the most desperately, followed by the Myrka in Warriors from the Deep.
This was such a great video Josh! For new updated effects I'd give The Moonbase for the cyber spaceships as the originals look like paper plates. Invasion of the Dinsoaurs for the obvious dinosaurs and Resurrection of the Daleks as the laser guns feel like light up toys without the added lasers! Also Troughton is the only Doctor not to receive any updated effects on his stories. My favourite updates are Day of the Daleks for the new effects and Dalek voices Logopolis for its improvements to the Doctors fall from the pharos project Kinda for the snake effect The Five Doctors for its added scenes and new effects Revelation of the Daleks for its cleaner effects The Curse of Fenric for its movie feel, added scenes and moodier lighting.
Brilliant video. Completely agree with you on Five Doctors, for years I thought the 1995 version that was just what the original was so it’s weird for me to actually see the actual original!
@@tayloredwards7441 That's the episode set at the 2012 Olympics isn't it - and with banners that used the bid logo instead of the actual event logo. I'd update those along with the existing CG.

Day Of The Daleks was spectacular with the updated effects and voices. A PERFECT way to update an old classic and make it more palatable to audiences.
I’ve been hoping Silver Nemesis would get the CGI treatment for years.
@@GuyClapperton1 Good call, I like to think that the parents saw the strings on Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet, but us Kids refused to see them. 😉👍
There's so much bad CSO in that one, I'm not sure it CAN be fixed.
Normally I prefer watching the classic series with the original effects but I give them credit for all the hard work they did, And I appreciate it.
Life Upgrade All I said is I think they did a good job on the CGI effects.
I would love his take on Earthshock/Ressurection of the Daleks
I would've been fine with changing the rest of the episodes to B/W if that meant updated Dinos! :)
I cannot understand why it was never done for the special edition and I desperately hope when it one day might be out on Blu Ray it gets that treatment
Daleks firing their guns with no lasers.
I’d especially love lil bloodsplatters when the bullets kill someone
That and exaggerated blood from the Daleks when they get killed by the Virus
That would be just peachy for a Blu-ray release of season 21
@@raptorfae.6645 yes please. I'd actually end up putting Resurrection of the Daleks on blue ray inside the dvd case so it sat happy with all the other dvd releases
Maybe we’ll even get actual footage of Katarina during the duplication scene instead of a still photo with a wavy effect!
Like, not blaming that on the original production team, there was literally no footage to use at the time, but still
If only George Lucas had made his 'improvements' optional as well
Too right!
Heretic, HERETIC.
I'm kidding, Crazy George had control issues since the Christmas Special. Issues that seem to have gotten worse as the years go on.
I would like to see the ''Invasion of the Dinosaurs'' with new improved CGI Dinosaurs.
Definitely IOTD. A terrific story badly let down by the effects. Would be a classic with CGI dinosaurs.
I have an updated part two of this story. Just scared to put it on youtube.
I have just updated part two of the story
Matt Moir Will you shut up about Dinosaurs, no one cares about that episode.
@@howardnwhite that's twice I've seen a version of this comment! And I'm intrigued. Vimeo is probably the place. I see Star Wars edits there which would never last on RUclips. So. It's time. Come on, now. Etc... ;)
What did you do with Fenric? It didn't really need anything.
as well as a fully recolourised version of part 1.
jesus christ, is that black obelisk in Five Doctors was for real? That's and OG effect?
I really thought that cone was the original one and looked outdated, but this one...
JEEZ
The black one was scarier
The new one looks like a silly ghost jellyfish.
@@tortysoft ,I agree it actually was more intriguing and was more far more effective
You can even hear Peter Moffat complain about it on the Two Doctors commentary (end of ep 1 IIRC).
the new mara was so good that they used it on the cover of 'tales of trenzalore'
This is great! “Time Flight needs all the help it can get,” has to be the quote of the video.
Finally! Joshua Snares has just made this video public again!
I didnt think I'd come across a channel like yours,..but thankfully I did. It is amazing how you completed this!!!!!
Caves of Androzani, fix the one bad thing in the story : the Magma Beast.
CanDo Entertainment I dont mind it, maybe cause its my personal favorite story of all time
CanDo Entertainment, maybe just dull the lighting and add some shadows so you only see glimpses of it
Brilliant idea because everything else in that story is just fantastic. This would make many fans favoruite Dr. Who story perfect.
Four seasons I want to come to Blu-Ray:
Season 25 (Sylvester McCoy Season 2) (With the extended version of Silver Nemesis)
Season 7 (Jon Pertwee Season 1)
Season 11 (Jon Pertwee Season 5) (With updated CGI/proper recolour on Episode 1 for Invasion of the Dinosaurs)
Season 13 (Tom Baker Season 2)
Great video!
Redoing the music score on Nemesis at the same time would be epic!!
Thanks for showing the comparison between old and new affects
I quite like the CGI version of Star Trek TOS
Enjoyable as always, Josh. Thanks. Surely, everyone would like to see new CGI on Invasion of the Dinosaurs?
As long as there is no chi to The Goodies two piece horse costumes!
The updated effect on Adric's Death i think is really great, though i do think it's still effective either way
Another good video.
I like to see a CGI fix to ROBOT e.g. the toy tank scene and also the way the Robot held the gun was too floppy plus too much very bad blue screen
Especially if the tank is shown melting or won
Robot is a great story and it's issues can be easily corrected. A pity that didn't happen on the box set, so now I'm not sure that will happen.
I wonder when Season 22 comes to Blu-Ray, the Jimi Hendrix track Fire, will be cleared for use in Revelation of the Daleks.
we will soon know...
I've been thinking about this since the announcement, as well as the missing "I'll take you to Blackpool" line (unfortunately seems to be lost to time)
I really, really, REALLY want CGI replacements for “Stones of Blood”
Not only is it the 100th serial, but the orgi, Megara, Hyperspace and the Cliff scene all desperately need a tidy up.
I also think it could be edited into a feature length version, with some cuts.
I honestly think some improved effects could really enhance this story, as I’ve always thought this had one of the best stories for the classic series, but the Orgi being styrofoam ruin it all.
If only the Ogri really had been called the Orgy!
I don't think I've ever watched a Classic episode with the new CGI effects - but now after seeing this video, I will dive in on those versions!
Only about 4:42 into the video: Where have I been?? I never knew there was any remade special FX for Doctor Who?? Now I want to see those episodes...
I just love these Videos fantastic work!
Oh wow! Thanks for watching, Steve! The love and care that went into these releases is clearly on display. Brilliant work!
Yeah, the contribution Mr. Roberts and his team have made to the Doctor Who legacy is incalculable. So much love and respect to the RT. Thank you!
I would love to see Image of the Fendahl, Claws of Axos, The Sea Devils or even Inferno get a CGI fix
Beautifully done
Finally, a youtuber with a narrative voice which is actually peasant to listen to!
Fascinating! Thanks for assembling these comparisons!
I feel like we should learn to enjoy the old effects. It’s a part of the whole experience.
I feel like that's a silly opinion stuck in the past
Without those updated voices the day of the daleks Would be dreadful because of how dreadful those voices are
Exactly. You’re literally replacing pioneers of special effects work with mediocre current cgi.
The history of the show is how it was created
great videos Josh - I didn't realize the blu-rays had all these extra CGI effects added - I might have to go back and rewatch them :)
Very nice! XD!
It would be nice if they fixed Sutekh at the very end of Pyramids of Mars.
They could have found a better Sutekh statue if they went to any museum and got one from the gift shop. Lol
@stephen noonan LOL, that description (''mouse in a dress") REALLY made me laugh....and I say that as someone who has been in love with ''Pyramids of Mars'' since 1975! :D
You're referring to Sutekh's gift of hand-delivered seat cushion? 🤩
Or his projection InThe Tardis (is imagine it looking more abstract)
What an excellent, informative video. Thank you!
Thanks for this, Josh. I had no idea they did this to classic Who.
Story that I think would benefit the most from CGI: Resurrection of the Daleks. I love that story but Christ is it let down by the lack of CGI.
7:15 This effect seriously looks like it was made in MS Paint
I'd like an updated CGI version of Talons Of Weng Chiang. Mainly to fix that stupid rat effect
Replace the Rat... with ROLAND RAT and Renta Ghost? I'd pay to see that LOL
Zak, I just had a thought: one special effect that would enhance the story historically?
@@davidaston5773 Renta Ghost just the first season or two - the rest require serious rewriting!
I'll add my vote for that - a favourite story, but hard to love the rat.

Hard to describe. Curious.
Wow, great video! So much interesting information, and you seem to have put a lot of work into it. Thanks!
I've always thought kindas updated effects look awsome!
I think I'd quite like to see Horror Of Fang Rock get some updated effects at the Rutan looks a bit dodgy and weak when it's on the stairs, as well as the shot of the "shooting star" towards the beginning.
I just wish they'd included sound effects with the dalek heat ray in Invasion earth.
Definitely Planet of the Dinosaurs! A great story, but lacking on the Dino FX, as noted by Barry Letts himself!
These new CGI added effects are AWESOME- I must go find these DVD's after seeing previews here...Thx for posting!!
I'd love somehow for the scene in the five doctors where Sarah Jane falls down the "hill" to be reedited so it looks more like a cliff
Absolutely - that was an absolute shocker!
Could they also do a reshoot where Susan tripping over looks at least 1% convincing?
Everyone is talking about their favourite CGI effects but no one is talking about Josh’s choice of fonts for the titles, the fact he used the Battlefield game font for Battlefield makes me smilie.
Is that the same font? haha... It's the one they use on the seventh doctor title sequence
Josh Snares it really is. Okay now I’m intrigued into what EA are doing copying Doctor Who with no credit.
I hope you'll do an updated version of this at some point.
I think Invasion of the Dinosaurs should be given the CGI treatment. The original dinosaur effects were a product of its time, and so does the dinosaur designs.
but it does always make me hungry for Chewits (UK advert reference that will woosh over heads)
When all the Collection sets are released, will you be doing an update video on this?
This is an awesome idea!!! :D
Terrific video, Josh!
Well done Josh! Enlightening & entertaining.
*I'd like to see Time Flight get the CGI treatment because... Well, it's Time Flight.*
Lol, funny guy!
Maybe also darken the picture to better match the original intentions for a dingy-looking, running-on-fumes facility.
And reshoot the karate-kicking scene to replace it with something less ridiculous.
Warriors of the Deep might be the tallest order of them all, based on how the Myrka interacts with characters. But you never know!
Wow ! I love you and your channel so much. I love how niche your content is!
Definitely niche!! 😂
I'd like to see 'new' Who enhanced with some lovely homemade model-shots to replace the ugly CGI.
If they were to remaster it in the future I am sure they would use better cgi over the old cgi.
That's a hilarious idea. Let's replace the CGI with cheap models and rubber monsters just like Classic Who. Fans would immediately flock to the older, five-dollar-budget look, while us older fans stare in disbelief. But, hey, why not?
@@DTM-Books Not cheap models. Good model work is better than cheap CGI any day, just like good CGI is better than bad modelwork.
I'd like to see the last couple seasons enhanced with some decent scripts and better acting.
James LaBarre Well, then, you’re in luck. All the Tom Baker episodes are available on DVD and Blu-Ray. Wining!
Lovely video, very much enjoyed thanx for taking the time and effort.
The Ark is well deserving for optional effects for that eventual Season 3 set
Many people love that triangle, so watch out! haha
@@JoshSnares It's a Giant Douche Turd Sandwich situation there, at least in my opinion, the Swirly Ice Cream Thingy I found just as ridiculous
That model shot in Trial cost £8,000 in 80’s money!
Also you’re not alone in hating the black triangle.
To be fair. It was basically the same thing the superman movie used as the phantom zone
@@DanTheMan2150AD That shot and the effort put into it really is amazing.
I hope Resurrection of the Daleks gets updated effects when the season 21 set comes out, it really needs them.
New Underworld effects pls to sort out that CSO fuzz
Personally I wouldn't care about Underworld because for me it is one of the most boring Dr. Who stories ever put to screen.
Underworld is awful anyway, the only entertainment is laughing at the effects
Man half of these i didn't know had optional effect. The next time i watch them i will watch with the effects thanks to you
That HORRIBLE Myrka creature in Warriors of the Deep should have got a scrubbing also!! 😂
i can't help but love that BOI
@@JoshSnares Noooo..haha..looks like the arse-end of the pantomime horse!! Haha
I love him even though he is dumb as all hell hahaha
@@JoshSnares Yes..he had a loveable disposition..but I wish he had the mystique and screen presence of the Skarasen..of Terror of the Zygons!! 😀
MEXICANMOOSE1976 Not too far wrong. The actors inside were the same pair that played Dobbin the pantomime horse in Rentaghost
A side by side comparison of the CG replacements in Doctor Who is something I've been hoping for for a long time, thank you for putting this together! As for me, I think Invasion of the Dinosaurs needs the treatment the most desperately, followed by the Myrka in Warriors from the Deep.
Terror of the Zygons, Invasion of the Dinosaurs, The Daemons.
thank you for this! I love when you say "extra"! the new "Logopolis" footage looks just plain impressive.
My favourite updates are
Day of the Daleks for the new effects and Dalek voices
Logopolis for its improvements to the Doctors fall from the pharos project
Kinda for the snake effect
The Five Doctors for its added scenes and new effects
Revelation of the Daleks for its cleaner effects
The Curse of Fenric for its movie feel, added scenes and moodier lighting.
Fabulous! I really enjoyed that!
Warriors of the Deep. If snake from Kinda can be fixed, Warriors of the Deep can be too.
Brilliant video. Completely agree with you on Five Doctors, for years I thought the 1995 version that was just what the original was so it’s weird for me to actually see the actual original!
I'd like to see some of the new series CG get cleaned up. A lot of it doesn't hold up anymore, especially the pre-HD Davies era.
MeBeMat Fear Her in particular could stand some changes. Also, Lazarus Experiment
@@tayloredwards7441 That's the episode set at the 2012 Olympics isn't it - and with banners that used the bid logo instead of the actual event logo. I'd update those along with the existing CG.
How do u get the new CGI dvds I have the original
