I had to pause and think about your comment regarding whether it's worth it to go 10 core vs 8 core for Logic Pro X. I know your test pertains to tracks rather than effects, but I want to highlight a finding that a friend and myself discovered and tested over a few days in other DAWs that likely applies to Logic Pro X, as well. If you didn't know this before, I just wanted to enlighten you. It is my understanding that in a lot of DAWs, effects that are stacked onto a single track will be designated to a single processing thread. This is large in part due to latency that would occur if the effects on a single track were scattered across different processing cores. The effect has to be processed then sent to the next effect to be processed, so on and so forth. Imagine if you had a pizza restaurant where the orders are taken, the prep work is done, and the pizza is baked-all in separate buildings across the city. That's a lot of additional time to add just to transfer the order, get it prepped, then baked, then brought back to the customer. That's why effects are done on a single processing thread-efficiency and realtime results that prevent delays and audible artifacts from occurring. But some effects are far more CPU-intensive than others, and that means single-core performance is of utmost importance, especially if stacking effects is unavoidable. I ran into a situation across two DAWs where I was stacking effects and it was causing that CPU thread to be completely saturated. This caused a ton of artifacts in the playback, and performance was abysmal. Apple's official documentation recommends not saturating tracks with CPU-intensive effects by instead using send effects-which is relevant if you are used to repeating the same exact effect across multiple tracks. By using a 'send' effect, you can tell multiple tracks to send their audio to be processed by one instance of that effects plugin. That way, you don't have clones of the same effect across multiple processing cores, taking up valuable resources. This is pro-level knowledge, but there are undoubtedly rookies out there who don't know how to efficiently manage resources in a DAW like Logic Pro X. It's important to know that for most people, their compositions don't have 100+ tracks all playing simultaneously. You might have a hundred tracks, but the audio for each track only really kicks in at certain parts of the song, so tracks mostly only use the CPU when it's needed. But if I had 100 tracks of audio trying to play simultaneously, my system would undoubtedly come to a halt. Orchestras and such might have a lot of tracks for each instrument or section, and so those workloads need more processing threads since there's a lot of tracks playing simultaneously, since a track basically gets its own CPU thread. So, if you use a ton of CPU-intensive effects simultaneously or have a lot of tracks actually playing back audio simultaneously, additional processing cores could be incredibly valuable to prevent completely saturating a single CPU core-as in my experience, my processor couldn't keep up with my demand, and I encountered lag and artifacts while running playback or recording. When you know how the DAW works and what tools it has to help you reduce CPU-usage (such as turning off effects processing for a muted track), you can really get efficient. But it does kind of require this deeper understanding to really diagnose these problems and tackle them. Anyway, just thought I'd share. I'm a software engineer, tech enthusiast and amateur music producer of 10+ years, and you don't always get to hear this kind of stuff explained in a bit more detailed way. Hope this was useful!

Vadim, I am not surprised by these results. The 2020 is a pretty stellar step forward for the iMac. If we are fine with the older machines it probably means we don't have use for the newer hardware. I know I don't have use for newer hardware and that's why I haven't upgraded. One day of course. Good work dude. See you on the next video.

Thanks for this comparison. I still edit photo and video with a fully spec’d out 2017 27” i7 iMac. My cameras only shoot h.264 and it’s still no slouch in editing. Until I upgrade both my cameras to newer ones that shoot HEVC/h.265 then I’ll upgrade to a whole new computer system

Great comparison. I’m debating if I should keep my nearly maxed out 10 core model with 16 gigs of v ram. Do you think my computer could handle 5.9k Canon raw light from the Canon c500 mark ii without the use of proxies? I only only really be interested in timeline performance of 24/25 frames per second with some headroom to colour grade it. I know you may not have a definitive answer. Any advice would be appreciated. I only have 7 days to return it. Would you say the 10 core iMac Pro with 16 gigs of v ram ( I forgot the name of the card ) would prove more helpful? Alternatively, do you think a 12-16 core Mac Pro with a w5700 x (16 gigs) would perform dramatically better for this type of footage considering the cost? also, the fans on my machine even when I am just browsing the web seem to be louder than my fans on my 2015 iMac. Have you found this to be the case with the 10 core model. I’m sorry for all the questions. Thank you!
What is the test environments for Logic Pro? What did you use on the tracks (instrument, plugin ..etc). Did you mean can Logic handle high processing plugins in 130 tracks?
Why are you not talking about the graphical glitch on the 5700XT models? It's all over Apple support forums, Macrumors, 9to5 Mac, iLounge, AppleInsider, and elsewhere. Why are you not covering this problem that is affecting *every* 2020 iMac w/ 5700XT? Seems like a pretty serious issue that you are ignoring.
In the comparisons , Are you using just Audio tracks with recordings on them using LOGIC PRO X? Or Did you also record midi tracks using Software instruments and Loops from the library too? I picked the i9 10core 2TB storage, adding 64 GB ram, 5700xt with 16gb vram, 10gb Ethernet port with no nano. Coming from a late 2013 21.5 inch with only 8 gb of ram. This new one is as good/better as the last iMac Pro, blows away the 2017 and still beats the 2019 and 2020 i7 8 core. In the long run I think the i9 10 core will future proof me and my needed uses till Apple silicon is perfected. Again MaxTech thanks for your comparisons and videos.

Can you comment on Davinci Resolve exports? Davinci is more optimized to use the GPU gap. How does 2017 vs 2020 with timeline LUT and some NR in Davinci? I have the 2017 and want to edit 4k at full resolution with NR active..... seems like the 2020 wont get me there?
So Vega was built for compute workloads RDNA is built gaming first. This is why in metal or any other compute benchmark they are decently close but when it’s a gaming benchmark RDNA blows it away.

Interestingly I’ve been comparing my 2017 iMac (3.8GHz i5, 40GB ram, 580 Pro 8GB) against the new M1 MacBook Air. Except for Metal and OpenGL scores the M1 destroys it, so I ordered the Air with 8-core GPU, 8Gb ram and 1TB storage. Now damn, the Air is delayed so I won’t get it till January. I hope it’s worth it...
I’m still on my late 2015 quad core with Radeon m395 only have 2gb vram. Looking at the 8 core 2020. So I’ll be seeing an ever bigger speed increase. Even just going from a fusion drive to those nvme ssd.
So, if I buy this Intel iMac, will I be able to use future softwares after they switch to ARM processors? I am unable to decide whether to buy this or wait for the ARM ones. if you want better battery life and you are a casual user, definitely wait for an ARM mac, and if you are a power user that uses third party apps and especially if you run windows 10, definitely buy an iMac right now

Hmm. My pc is 3 years old. I have a 7900x 10 core Intel CPU. 64gb ddr 4 ram. 1080ti GPU (faster than 5700 XT on the iMac). My 3 year old PC is actually faster than the 2020 version of iMac. I love Apple products. I am currently using it to edit Multicam 3 camera, 4k 60fps weddings. It works great. iMacs are always right at the limitation line. I don't like that. My 3 year old PC doesn't experience the bottleneck and upgrade yearly issue of an iMac. I can also change my GPU to RTX 3090 and 18 core CPU if I want on PC with the current motherboard. I'm just saying, Apple is missing the mark for me. Mac Pro out of my price range. Remember I said I edit weddings. Yea that. Hope this helps someone. Peace.

As I am only editing iPhone videos, it doesn’t seem necessary to upgrade from 2017 model. The i5 is slower but still does the job well

The 2017 should have a design refresh with the adoption of Thunderbolt 3 just like the MacBooks. 2020 is here and yet no design refresh

So, if I buy this Intel iMac, will I be able to use future softwares after they switch to ARM processors? I am unable to decide whether to buy this or wait for the ARM ones. By the way, even these new iMacs haven't arrived yet in my country due to the disruption in supply chain because of covid19 pandemic.
if you want better battery life and you are a casual user, definitely wait for an ARM mac, and if you are a power user that uses third party apps and especially if you run windows 10, definitely buy an iMac right now

What’s the performance difference between the 5500xt vs 5700xt? Where I live, we have to wait 6-9 weeks for the 5700xt where as the 5500xt we can buy in the new Mac off the shelf. Need to know if it’s worth the wait
5700XT is about 50% better for graphics related tasks (like video editing and gaming)

Great comparison. I wonder if there is a way of comparing dual-monitor LR Classic editing with heavy gradient filters and spot removal where the brushes come to a crawl: is it memory, is it clock speed, is it the video card memory or bandwidth?

Hmm. My pc is 3 years old. I have a 7900x 10 core Intel CPU. 64gb ddr 4 ram. 1080ti GPU (faster than 5700 XT on the iMac). My 3 year old PC is actually faster than the 2020 version of iMac. I love Apple products. I am currently using it to edit Multicam 3 camera, 4k 60fps weddings. It works great. iMacs are always right at the limitation line. I don't like that. My 3 year old PC doesn't experience the bottleneck and upgrade yearly issue of an iMac. I can also change my GPU to RTX 3090 and 18 core CPU if I want on PC with the current motherboard. I'm just saying, Apple is missing the mark for me. Mac Pro out of my price range. Remember I said I edit weddings. Yea that. Hope this helps someone. Peace.
