This was so much fun to paint. Honestly, when I first opened my box I wasn't to interested in this project. To my surprise I really enjoyed it. Thank you Sarah
hi Sarah and Keegan! I had such fun following along with this on a cold winter's day here in Melbourne, Australia! I'll definitely be trying my own pics 😊. Wendy
I absolutely LOVE this!! Thank you so very much! Question: How do I take a photo and turn it into a line drawing like you used for this?? I'd love to do my grandchildren. Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated. Say hi to Keenan!
You can turn photos into line drawings on most phones and computers. It's a setting in the software. What kind of computer or phone are you using? I can try to help you learn how to do this
@@mariannekeller7504 Hi, The two easiest ways for you to do this 1) On your phone, in your photos open the photo you want. You'll have an edit option , on my G8 it looks like a pencil, click that. Then you'll get a bunch of icons, pick the one that looks like 3 intersecting circles. The choose the greyscale filter. Then turn brightness down, turn hue up and turn saturation up. It comes out looking close enough to be used for an outline for painting. I can't post an image here, otherwise I'd show you an example
Yay! We can't wait to see your Simple Portrait creation, Lara! Be sure and share it with us on social! :) And you can find the masking fluid pen right here: www.letsmakeart.com/products/latex-free-drawing-gum-marker-4mm. Happy painting!
At around 29:10 where Sarah is talking about knowing when a painting is done - very helpful. I remember one of the early paint alongs she said "If you're not sure leave it overnight and wait for the painting elves to come along." LOLOL So true. I leave all my paintings overnight before I decide if they're done.
I enjoyed painting this and galaxy girl so very much. Both projects reminded me of people I wanted to paint. Could you please provide some direction/guidelines on how to adapt these portrait projects to paint someone we know?
Hi Dalene! There are apps you can use that will turn your photos into an outline. Rapter Resizer and Colorscape are both apps that members of our Watercolor group have used with success.
Loved this idea and would like to try doing this with an actual photo. I had a hiccup on this portrait but it was apparently due to me not giving full coverage with the masking tape hear the cheek and chin area. One main issue I had was that when one uses the masking fluid pen over a tracing paper mark, the masking fluid pen eraser does not pick up the tracing paper mark also as it does with pencil. I tried it again using a lighter touch with the pencil when using the tracing paper and same result. Any suggestions or insight?
I had the same issue today. I tried erasing the graphite with a number of different art erasers, after removing the masking fluid and nothing worked. I was actually removing paper I was erasing so hard! Eventually went back and carefully painted over some of the graphite marks.

I love Sarah, but I was having anxiety the whole time she was picking up the masking fluid! I use it all the time and I just have to lift a tiny corner and then it pulls off in one big stretchy piece and you don't have to rub at all. It takes just a few seconds. Maybe it's the type of masking fluid. I love love love the painting though!! 💕
In love with this channel.
I love this - she looks so much like my granddaughter! Now I need a grandson please!
You have a very interesting pencil grip.

I'm so glad!
Best line ever…”it doesn’t beep when it’s done!” thanks for giving us a good laugh to start our day! 💚
This was so so awesome! I can't describe how much I love all these negative paintings, it is very calming and fun to do. Thanks, Sarah!
Great tutorial
I dunno why, but this painting gives me a total 80's vibe!
Thanks, Sarah! I like the bright colors!!
It would be funny to count all the times Sarah says “like” in this tutorial 😂. Love you Sarah, just mean it all in fun. 😉
You never know.

Woah woah woah😲
Nice. Feel like we missed a step here. How you took the photo and made the sketch would have been helpful. Thank you.
Hi Lori! The outline is included in our subscription box and watercolor kit. They are created by Sarah and are downloadable on our website.
I love this, but do we have to use that eraser for removing the masking fluid
We're so glad you enjoyed this tutorial. You can also use your finger to remove the masking fluid.
Does the eraser take off any of the paper?
Can you please tell what paper did you used ?

Me: hasn't everyone?
Keenan: "NO"
Me: :O
Keenan is a special case.
The rubber eraser is called a rubber cement pick-up. This project terrifies me but I am going to push through it.
I was so disappointed there wasn’t a fancy name… le rubber cement pick up isn’t very intriguing
I painting is done when you take the tape off
It is best to wait till your painting is dry to remove your tape.
