I love the creativity that people had with makeup in the 2016 Era. SO many colorful looks, techniques, and people weren't scared to be Extra! While I love the idea of "clean makeup", I just prefer a half glam look on myself. 😊 Both are beautiful, but what I super don't like is people criticizing others for their makeup preferences (i.e. Gen Z making fun of millennials who like to do a full glam or even half glam).....let people do what they want without being made fun of! As an aside, love your warmth and kindness. I've been watching you for yearsss and you slay every look! ❤❤
exactly i kind of like a mixture of both, like the base stuff was a lot... i'll admit but even then i didn't go ham on the base but what i really think is missing is the eyeshadow looks and creativity people had and i think people should still do that despite it being 'outdated' or whatever but i change makeup styles all the time, that's what i like to do so i never stick to one aesthetic or trend really no one should be shamed for how they like makeup
I personally haven’t seen any Gen Zers making fun of millennials for wearing full or half glam makeup, but what I have seen are millennials and baby boomers shaming Gen Zers for starting to get into makeup and skincare. Just two days ago this local makeup artist in my area posted on her IG page a picture of one of her clients who was getting ready for her sweet sixteen. The client wanted a light natural glam look so the makeup artist didn’t do too much makeup on her, but the comments coming from older women in their 40’s-70’s were so unnecessary: “that’s too much makeup” “she doesn’t need all that makeup” “she’s too young to wear all that makeup” “she looks old” “she looks horrendous” “she looks 40.” All she had on was a bit of concealer, a skin tint, some bronzer, blush, the lightest dusting of setting powder, a nude-ish brown lipstick, and brow gel. She looked very natural, and still like herself with not a lot of heavy makeup on yet she still got shamed online for wearing makeup.
this is so true; it was definitely more colourful and interesting!! now it’s more understated and graphic liner I guess for something more “out there” 😊 thank you so much! ❤
@@tiamarrow6366gen Zs started in 97 so pushing 30, I was born in 03 and just turning 21 so we definitely aren’t ’learning our style’, our style was 2016 make up.
the 2016 side gives me such flashbacks to copying your videos to do a halo eye or half cut-crease from the inner corner to the middle of my eyelid HAHAHAHA I never left my uni flat without one done 😩 pure vibes 🥲
Soph, i know I'm way too old at 52 for your algorithm but i absolutely love your videos, and I've learned loads about different make up tips, I love the fact that you're so completely honest and are refreshingly not annoying lol. . ❤
Personally I think there’s a happy medium where your base doesn’t look like a mask, it’s natural but still has coverage. I realized that doing foundation and then layering concealer on top not only uses more product but adds more layers which can look caked on especially after powdering, so I think it’s actually better to cover dark circles and any redness and blemishes with concealer and then go in with foundation mainly on the areas where you didn’t put the concealer. It was such a game changer in my base routine that I just know it would feel so wrong to do foundation first lol
I’ve only just uncovered the revelation that my face/base makeup has changed but my eyes have stayed the same- and that’s why I’m still so wistful for the 2016 vibe 😅🎉
A lighter base is definitely the way to go, but I'm not a blush girl & I miss the fun eye looks! I loved your looks with multiple colors & shapes. I miss some of the tutorial-esque style videos.
Hey soph, I don’t normally comment of your videos. I was actually just watching your TikTok video reviewing the elf setting mist. I have been with you since 2018 and loved watching you grow ☺️💜
I love this. Such a great video. I’m a mix of 2016 and 2024. I love full glam but I like to do it with a lighter touch.. like I’ll wear a black smoky eye with a skin tint and blush! I love the halo eye you did for this 2016 look btw
I love both sides tbh. And I still wear my eye make up 2016 style when I'm going for full glam . I do love the 2024 side for a more natural glam look thou when I don't have much time. Loved this video. Xx
I feel like the biggest difference for me (other than moving away from full coverage, matte makeup) is that I wear a lot less makeup. I used to not feel comfortable leaving the house without makeup and when I went on holiday I would take a MASSIVE toilet bag filled to the brim with products. Now I’ll usually wear makeup for occasions and typically some mascara/ brow gel for work but I feel much more confident just showing my skin. So glad my confidence has grown! Didn’t realise that shift until now so thanks for the video! ❤
I definitely use a blend of the two depending on the occasion / day! Like I still enjoy a matte base, but also mostly blush rather than the heavy contour. Really interesting to think back on how much it’s changed / developed ! Also this video is making me realise how much of my makeup is OG and probably needs throwing away, but I just don’t have the heart to do it 🫠
I remember watching Jaclyn Hills Cat Eye tutorial or Lauren Curtis's Clubbing Smokey Eye videos. It was such a creative time. No one was afraid to do too much. 2016's RUclips made me a makeup lover❤❤❤
I like elements of both 🤔 it's just fun to do makeup in lots of different ways, anyway. I can be full glam goth one day and just some blush and mascara another😅
I've watched your videos since 2016 & have never missed an upload🥰 I was right there with you with the 2016 makeup but as someone with ridiculously dry skin I much prefer the 2024 makeup on myself and I cannot live without a glowy blush and a sparkle on my lid! but I did love the creativity of 2016 makeup especially with all the different colourful eyeshadow looks people did!❤
What a great video! You should have used your own highlighter palette😉! The contour that almost everybody used was ABH contour stick in Fawn. I still to this day use both bronzer and contour, the difference is the amount. We used so much of everything! I never do more than two coats of mascara now, but back then ( I didn’t use faux lashes ) I would pile it on! Thanks for doing this video! 💕
So fun seeing the two styles side by side! I'm very much a blend of both. Blush is life, but I still love a fun colorful glittery eye look now and again
I never comment but man what a throwback this was, I've Beeb watching you since all that time ago!! I You really were epitome of 2016 makeup!! And taught me soooo much. Love seeing us all evolve together ❤️
Dude the throwbacks I keep remembering! Haha, I’ve been here since 2019 - I remember i found you when I was new to recovery (5 years sober from opiates now) but your content helped me so much during that first year of sobriety, which tends to be the hardest for a lot of us who have struggled with addiction. Thank you for always being there on some of the toughest days ❤ love you Soph, you’re definitely one of the only trustworthy RUclipsrs and I will never ever unsubscribe! Even if you do some messed up shit one day (lmfao, yeah right. like that would happen) I’m probably not going anywhere! Makeup really helped me to get through some horrific shit and your videos were a huge part of that. I’ve learned a lot from you over the years. Now I’m in esthetician/MUA school and I couldn’t be happier! Just know you’ve changed a lot of our lives simply by being here, being yourself and constantly spreading love, positivity and kindness to the world, as well as your gorgeous makeup looks and all your skills! You’re amazing and I’m proud to support you Soph ❤
Oh 2016. How you made us look fab 😅😅. Although I have always used blush. Waaay before 2016 even. Bondi Bay nudestix was my cream bronzer and we can't forget champagne pop highlighter! I would love to see you follow your very first makeup tutorial video! Also the tutorial that has had the most likes over your time on RUclips. That'd be fun! Much love as always ❤️ 💕
My brow is definitely a combination of 2016 and 2024. I will use a lighter pomade to fill in the brow area as mine are super sparse then a darker pencil to add hair like strokes and set in place with clear brow gel. Brow products and colour reference I used is Benefit pomade in 3.5 and benefit micro brow pencil in 4.5. 💝
So Happy Elf Works for everyone but tragic for me i ended up in hospital on life support due to severe allergen to something in elf products so now i look and see others enjoy and love there products for me its a big no no no ! but how i want to use elf ! but after i spent £ 100 on products !! but my niece enjoyed all the products without any problems , but i remember your makeup when you were living with your mum and dad ! and your eye liner was something else ! but fabulous i loved your channel then as i do now ! love liz xxx
Omg what a throwback with the 2016 videos!! Can’t believe I’ve been following you for you long haha 2024 girlie here all the way but definitely my makeup has been changing at the same time as yours 😂🫶🏼
Love watching your videos Soph! Been watching them for the last 8 years and that’s how I actually got into makeup! Can you do a video where you let James choose your makeup products/look and do a full face? Or maybe a video where you do your makeup without a mirror or looking!
This was fun to see side by side. To be honest I feel like I'm doing a mix of both. I feel like the eye make up used to be sooo much more fun than now😍
I love this. I prefer 2024, I started getting into makeup in the 2016 era and naturally started getting lighter and just realized the new trends are following how I already was doing my makeup! My dry skin is so much happier with the moisture and I have tiny eyelids so the amazing eye makeup never looked right on my face. Miss the creativity a bit though!
I’ve just clicked on the video but I just wanna say, you are literally the only beauty influencer I trust. The two youtubers I trust are you and Jazzy (maybe spell her name wrong). You have the same vibe and it always feels like hanging out with a friend when listening to you. And you are so damn pretty!! Now lets watch the video 😄♥️
I love that catrice foundation, and I love glowy skin. I feel it looks so nice and skin like. Doesn’t look super matte on myself. But I do use hydrating primers. 💗💗
I can appreciate both! I honestly kinda blend the two these days. I’m emo so bolder eye makeup is kinda my usual, but I use more of the 2024 face techniques. But I love to be contoured
Oooo soph you should try 2024 makeup with 2016 makeup brands ! That’d be so fun and maybe challenging seeing if 2016 makeup has the ability to stay up to date with the new trends ! A thought but love the vid 🥰
I remember years ago after watching YT makeup videos, doing my makeup, walking out of my room and my husband saying, "You have stripes on your cheeks!" I ran back to the mirror, and he was right!🤭 I did go back and blend it in better. I also remember the "no blush" trend, and being glad that I don't really follow trends that closely. I have always loved blush, Milani Luminoso, that is like a blush and highlight combined! Great video, Soph!❤
Ahhh!!!! So happy to see a new video I have been rewatching some of your older ones all day. I just love your videos. I relate to you so much. Your just so sincere and honest even when life is putting you thru it. You have the warmest friendliest smile 😊❤
I kind of missed out on 2016 makeup as I was busy with two small children! Kind of glad as it’s completely out of my comfort zone. I started wearing makeup in the mid-late 90s when we still only had magazines for makeup guidance- most of those were pushing the ‘no makeup makeup’ or very brown toned looks. I’ve loved the last few years of makeup- love the focus on skin looking great and especially how drug store makeup performs- it has come a long way over the last 10-20 years. I used to be a premium girl all the way (as it used to genuinely be better quality) but now I love being able to buy amazing products at a great price. I’m now in my early 40s and in my ‘what works for me’ era. I love trying out new products that fit into that and I love your Euphoria style looks for inspiration when we go to family festivals 😂. Oh how my life has changed but I still absolutely love makeup. That will never change ❤
It’s crazy how different people have always done makeup despite trends. I used to always use glowing blush all over. I used to use the bobbi brown one all over my cheek. Now I usually use rare beauty liquid blush with maybe the Charlotte tilbury highlighter. My dry skin has never used a matt foundation 😅
Elf putty bronzer had a hold in 2016 I remember the lightest one was that grey brown colour, Yes Chanel had one but most of us couldn’t afford that. Xx
For cream contour I remember using a Rimmel duo stick that was a cool toned colour on one side and a highlighter on the other side ( which was sadly horrible) but the contour side was fab! 🤗
The way I definitely rotate between both looks on a day to day basis 😂 (granted my 2016 style has updated A LITTLE with trends. Glowy base ALWAYS haha)
I have always had dry skin so in 2016, my foundation was the Bourjois Healthy Mix Serum which I tried based on a recommendation by the OG RUclips beauty icon Lisa Eldridge. Now that Bourjois is coming back, I’m super keen to see if they come to Australia and bring the serum foundation back!
Ooh a big thing I’ve noticed more recently is setting your cream products with the same product but in a powder formula- so like setting cream blush with powder blush, and cream bronzer with a powder bronzer! We all definitely used to just set our whole faces with a translucent powder and then blend powder products on top 😂
I’ve also followed you for yeeeears so I just KNEW you were going to do a halo eye situation for the 2016 side, you literally taught me how to do it ahahhaa
Since I'm old as dirt or feel that way anyway, I'm scared of cream products! Lol I'll be 38 at the end of the month, and I'm just scared it will look horrible! lol You look beautiful no matter how you wear your makeup! 💚🖤
I think I tend to do a mix of both. I really like to make my eyes my main feature (2016 but a little softer)...eyeshadow is my favourite product. I then go softer and hydrated on my lips....I hated liquid lipstick 😟 made my lips so dry. I mostly use skin tints but will reach for mat foundation sometimes...i tend to use a hydrating primer underneath so it's not too dry. I am not very oily (just nose area) so a little powder and settling spray and I'm good to go. 😊
Can you plssss do the eyeshadow test on the elf setting spray and show if it rubs off 🥹🥹I always get the stay all night setting spray so I wanna know if it’s worth switching ❤❤❤
Wow, the sides you did the concealer under your eye a lot looks a lot smaller than the other side. Why did we use so much back then lol. and yes, cream brushes are especially for older women. They don't set up as much as powder, blushes in wrinkles and give them more useful appearance.
I love the creativity that people had with makeup in the 2016 Era. SO many colorful looks, techniques, and people weren't scared to be Extra! While I love the idea of "clean makeup", I just prefer a half glam look on myself. 😊

but what i really think is missing is the eyeshadow looks and creativity people had and i think people should still do that despite it being 'outdated' or whatever
but i change makeup styles all the time, that's what i like to do so i never stick to one aesthetic or trend really

I agree. I don't put much on but I admire all types of looks and don't give others crap for their tastes.
I personally haven’t seen any Gen Zers making fun of millennials for wearing full or half glam makeup, but what I have seen are millennials and baby boomers shaming Gen Zers for starting to get into makeup and skincare. OF COURSE how could I forget!
Honestly the nostalgia of the 2016 makeup look is hitting me! How was it so long ago 😭

hahahaha omg we were all in it together 😂😭
I worked at Sephora during the 2016 glam and this HITS HARD 😂 My dry eczema skin is so happy it’s now 2024!
same omg. i love the look of full glam but it’s not eczema safe lol

Honestly 2016 eye looks will always win for me. So much colour and fun and creativity!
Rumour has it, colour is coming back, and the neutral no-makeup-makeup look is going!!!!😮
I like the Elf primer, so looks like I'm going to have to go get the setting spray...damn it, and I just bought one today!
That gigantic Soleil de Tan Chanel Bronzer was all over RUclips in 2016. I feel like 85% of beauty RUclipsrs had that product.

I like both looks Soph. I'm not a makeup expert I've been doing the same look since high school.
Obsessed with how the 2024 lip matches the 2016 eye and the 2016 eye matches the 2024 lip 😂

The Benefit Hoola cream bronzer stick was my go to for contour back then.

The 2016 side is how I remember you! I met you around that time and the nostalgia 😂
love the eyeshadow from 2016
I kind of missed out on 2016 makeup as I was busy with two small children! Kind of glad as it’s completely out of my comfort zone. Oh how my life has changed but I still absolutely love makeup. That will never change ❤
as someone who has watched almost every single video from you since 2016 this was so nostalgic to me in a way
More like 2014 but ABH cream contour kit used to BE cream contour🙌🏻
Came back to it today actually. Still hits hard ngl; just use it differently😇
It’s my first time beeing so early! And its perfect video for me! I love mixing 2016 makeup with current make-up trends ❤️
i've been following you for almost 8 YEARS???!! wow
Only thing I'd add to the 2024 side is the eyeliner of 2016. Love it and you did an amazing job of it
Hiya Sophie, I’m so glad I found your channel through RUclips recommendations.❤
It’s crazy how different people have always done makeup despite trends. I used to always use glowing blush all over. I used to use the bobbi brown one all over my cheek. Now I usually use rare beauty liquid blush with maybe the Charlotte tilbury highlighter. My dry skin has never used a matt foundation 😅
I remember a lot of people using the bourjois cream bronzer and the Chanel one! I’ve always been a blush gal even back then 😊
2016 Soph taught me so much, we've been on this journey together haha!x
I remember being 16 and watching your videos so this was very nostalgic to me
I miss the 2016 days but god im so glad we dont do makeup like that anymore it was so difficult for no reason! Also Soph ur nails are stunnin
Can you do an updated nail care routine? Your nails always look so beautiful.
Good video I love the creativity of 2016 makeup
I like a mix of both simple natura basel but a pop of colour on the eyes
Elf putty bronzer had a hold in 2016 I remember the lightest one was that grey brown colour, Yes Chanel had one but most of us couldn’t afford that. Xx
In 2016 it was that chanel cream bronzer that was huge! It was so damn expensive though lol
For cream contour I remember using a Rimmel duo stick that was a cool toned colour on one side and a highlighter on the other side ( which was sadly horrible) but the contour side was fab! 🤗
I’m a 2016 eye (bc it’s so fun to play w/ color) w/ a 2024 skin (I use a matte foundation but I but a glowy bronzer or blush) type of girl
The way I definitely rotate between both looks on a day to day basis 😂 (granted my 2016 style has updated A LITTLE with trends. Glowy base ALWAYS haha)
Id love to see a full face of affordable cruelty free make up using brands like primark and elf 🐰🥰
Gorgeous as always. I remember these trends in your channel and I used to copy you 😂 so we are all guilty of that ❤
Ooh a big thing I’ve noticed more recently is setting your cream products with the same product but in a powder formula- so like setting cream blush with powder blush, and cream bronzer with a powder bronzer! We all definitely used to just set our whole faces with a translucent powder and then blend powder products on top 😂
I’ve also followed you for yeeeears so I just KNEW you were going to do a halo eye situation for the 2016 side, you literally taught me how to do it ahahhaa
I feel like the cream contour of 2016 was ABH or NYX contour palettes or Kim k contour sticks!
I love the make up on both sides although I cant help but seeing this as a glam todoroki from my hero academia cosplay look and I love it ❤
My most used contour in 2016 was without a doubt the nyx blush in taupe
I like how the eye look on the right side matches the lip color on the left side and vice versa😂
Since I'm old as dirt or feel that way anyway, I'm scared of cream products! Lol I'll be 38 at the end of the month, and I'm just scared it will look horrible! lol You look beautiful no matter how you wear your makeup! 💚🖤
I love both your looks Soph!! ❤❤
I think the Anastasia cream contour palette was really popular back then! also the sosu one was sooo popular (at least in ireland)
I miss the whispies, mary louminizer, mac lipsticks, sleek, colourpop, NYC, NYX soft matte lipcreams etc in this videooo. 🥹
Soph i love your videos so much- they are so helpful! you’re my favourite youtuber 💕
Been waiting for another vid, already know this one is going to be great!
I love these kinds of videos! You should follow an old tutorial of yours!
Hoola quickie contour stick was my jam back in the day 😂
