In 2004, the DOJ in their report to congress determined that the 1994 Weapons Ban "had little to no effect" on firearm related deaths. That reinstating it wouldn't do much going forward. That report was the biggest reasoning the ban ended.

SKS stands for Samozaryadny Karabin sistemy Simonova, which is Russian for "Self-Loading Carbine of the Simonov System". The SKS was designed by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov in 1944.
UK here, land of regulation. Want a funny? I use a CZ 457 for pest control. I had the stock Cerakoted in a dark green. A woman saw me on my land but made a beeline for me. As they do. First words out her cakehole? "Why do you need an assault rifle"? Some "humans" are beyond all comprehension.
I've never understood the phenomenon of these people confronting you and asking you "why do you need xyz" while acting afraid or intimidated, but obviously they were not too afraid or intimidated to confront you. All they really want is control of you and for you to submit. You appear to them to be the peg that must be hammered down.
Easily convertable and the mags already exist because of the popularity of the conversion. ATF loves that kind of language.. "Easily convertable or modified". 😂
@@jaydunbar7538 I live in NJ, we’ve had an AWB since 1990. Fixed mag is exempt. It’s based on a list of banned guns and “substantially identical” firearms based on the feature list. SKS with a fixed mag is specifically excluded since the law bans “SKS with detachable magazine type” by name.
Unfortunately, in California that's exactly how they're treated. About 30 years ago a famous case occurred when a San Jose cop received letters that a couple of his unmodified original SKS's were illegal under the 1989 laws on "Assault Rifles" and eventually lost his job because he didn't immediately turn them in for destruction. He later won in court when California couldn't even tell the judge what technical features on the SKS's were illegal. He got backpay/promotion, but he moved to another state to get away from California's restrictive gun laws. They have this weird listing of SKS's from countries from Albanian to Yugoslavian. Years ago about 1/3 of all SKS's were illegal under the DOJ's authority (not the law). Technically the only illegal one (under their "Assault Rifle" laws) should be the ones with the AK Magazine conversions (a mod done by the Chinese decades ago to upgrade their SKS's with high-capacity magazines). Only about 10 percent of all Chinese imports had that mod, and it was not used by most other SKS producing countries. The excuse on other ones are things like a grenade launcher sight (you can't buy Soviet era grenades in the US or even produce them due to the manufacturing issues). Yet the California DOJ kept adding SKS's to the list, that weren't in the original laws (or even later laws). After that court case and several public humiliations on the SKS rules, they pulled many of those SKS's off the list. But currently several models of SKS's are illegal in California and can't be sold in the state. They claim that only SKS's with detachable mags are illegal and yet refuse to register SKS's that don't have the AK mags modification or have the modifications to use detachable mags. You can take any SKS, remove the fixed magazine, and put on a specially modified detachable magazine (it's awkward, but it works) and later return it back to it's original configuration. Those are illegal in California, but since they can be put on any SKS in existence, the California DOJ tries to refuse to register any model SKS"s they claim can be modified with those magazines and as I said any SKS can use those special detachable mags, so all SKS's are suspect in the DOJ's eyes. Many people have had refusals on SKS's registrations because they suspected or saw something on the pictures on their SKS's that they thought were illegal mods to put on those larger magazines. One friend submitted his Yugoslavian SKS a couple of years ago and it was refused as he had removed the grenade launcher sight (they said it was an unauthorized modification), yet they put that gun on the original DOJ (only) ban list years ago because it had a grenade launcher sight. I think they just look for excuses not to register legal guns, like their constant removal from the "Approved Handgun List" that had reduced the number of legally available to purchase handguns in California by almost 75 percent. That list gets shorter every year.
My understanding, in reloading the SKS without stripper clips, is that you can turn the rifle bottom-up and hinge open the magazine, then take loose cartridges, drop them in several at a time, close the magazine, and go to town. I keep thinking about trying it with my Yugo on my next range visit.
There is NO SUCH THING as an “assault weapon” 🙄 Assault is an ACTION, not an object. Even if a weapon is named as such, until it is used to harm or kill someone no one has been assaulted.
that SKS is a lot nicer than the one that loon was sporting. I have a Norinco SKS- M I bought in the late 90s. Runs great, good fun. edit: the magazine statement is fact, mine runs on steel flat-back mags, it does not like the mags with a spine, polymer P-mags are hit and miss.
In NY even today the SKS is legal because it has the fixed 10 round magazine. You can still have the adjustable stock, Pistol grip and muzzle break. If you convert it to replaceable magazines it has to have original solid stock and no muzzle breaks or threaded barrel.
In the summer of '94, I bought a Chinese SKS for $80. Couldn't afford the Russian ones which sold for $230. Gold was selling for $400 an ounce back then. Using Gold as the standard, that would be the equivalent of $500 today. As a young adult, I grossed $560 every two weeks at my entry-level job. I could buy one with two days' of wages. This definitely shows that using guns and gold as a measure, wages have stagnated, but you already knew that. Just some data points for you youngsters.

I've owned Chinese, Yugo and Russian SKS rifles. In the 1990's, my fun gun was a Norinco SKS with one of the 20 round Chinese mags. I modified several with the 20 round mags and they all worked perfectly. At the time, our club had a military rifle match and as I stood waiting my turn a fellow with an AR-15, standing with his buddies commented "Look at that Commie piece of s**t". (I don't think he thought I could hear him). He went first and soon came back looking dejected. His buddies asked what was wrong and he said "My AR jammed on me three times". I just smiled. My SKS didn't. In my experience the SKS is generally more accurate than the AK-47.

The Sks and the AK were in development at the same time. The sks was finished and adopted first. They ak barrowed heavily from the SKS by order of the Kremlin. It was cheap to produce, provide a decent round, and work in all environments.
If it was a Assault rifle it would be called "AS" not "SKS". Since unlike the AR in AK the A is for Assault rifle (in Russian). That's why I always disliked calling civilian Kalashnikovs AK's, SKK for self-loading or sporting carbine. A AK should have 3 pins and fun mode of fire. From a European perspective, most gun laws and regulations in the US. Makes as much sense as the export restrictions on gun parts or accessoires . I had a Chinese SKS before I moved from Maryland to Florida. It was ok, but I sold it cause it reminded me too of Maryland's BS gun laws. Will I get another SKS in the future? Maybe. Depends how I feel at the time.
I keep hearing this notion about detachable SKS magazine are unreliable now I seen videos where they have been unreliable but never once has it happened to me and I've been shooting sks rifles for more than 20 years
is it "fully semi automatic" with "double barrel magazine extended clips" and does it "weigh as much as 10 boxes that you might be moving"? because every gun expert knows those are the criteria for being an assault weapon of war and mass destruction

The same way we want the left to stop spreading lies and bullshit, we need to do the same. Semi auto only versions of assault rifles are just as effective as select fire. Military doctrine is centered around semi auto fire for purposes of accuracy and conservation of rounds. Auto fire is for suppressive purposes, in full blown machine gun and assault form. Other than that, it serves no practical purpose and is really good at heating up barrels and burning ammo. Yes, more rounds down range increases the odds of a round hitting any given target, but semi auto shots are substantially better at hitting the intended target all day long, and thats been proven time and time again. The point is that, yes, ak's, ar's, etc are assault rifles; that is their purpose, thats what they were made for, even in semi auto form. The entire point of these guns are for use in combat, period. Theyre not sporters, not hunting rifles...assault rifles. Can you hunt, plink or compete with them, yes, but they were made for war. And you know what...thats okay. We shouldnt hide behind false narratives like the left, embrace the truth. We have every right to own any weapons we choose; if our tax dollars are good enough to fund the military and govt paramilitary forces with these firearms, theyre good enough for us to own as well. Even in semi auto form, these are assault rifles, and we have every right to own them and not explain why. And in the case of the sks, it was also fielded for war and the way his was set up, was closer to modern assault spec. In short, that rifle would be just as effective as an ak, making it viable as an aassault rifle...and again, thats okay.
The SKS was never manufactured as an automatic firearm afaik. I know people modified them to be full auto but out of the factory every SKS should be semi only
In 2004, the DOJ in their report to congress determined that the 1994 Weapons Ban "had little to no effect" on firearm related deaths. That reinstating it wouldn't do much going forward. That report was the biggest reasoning the ban ended.

Many US Marines that fought at the Chosin Reservoir would argue that the SKS is indeed an assault rifle.
It doesn’t meet the definition
The SKS was never manufactured as an automatic firearm afaik. I know people modified them to be full auto but out of the factory every SKS should be semi only
The SKS wasn't manufactured in China until 1956. The North Koreans and Chicoms were armed with a mix of mosin nagants and Ppsh-41's.
No weapon is going to assault you but people will My pistol is not an assault pistol
