Some Metal Casting & Pole Lathe Activities At The Forest School. Hakeford Woods

Today, we had a great time at the Forest School doing pewter castings. We had a cuttlefish each in which we learned how to create our own mold designs. Also seen in this video is the Forest School Pole Lathe that we designed and made together. This is the second test of the lathe. There are still one or two things to be upgraded and designed for this lathe so that it can be used for bowl and spindle turning.

We used old pewter tankards or mugs and melted them down first. These do have a lead content, but I think you can buy a lead-free pewter online.

How did you make the impression in the plaster mold?

We just cut the impression on one side of the cuttlefish after flattening the two halves by rubbing them together. We cut the impression using jewellers type screwdrivers 🪛
