View of Homer, Alaska from a crewmember of the Coast Guard Cutter Ironwood in 1969. Air, Sea and Ground views of Homer, Seldovia, Port Graham, Kachemak Bay.
Beautiful video! I was nine years old the time this video was taken! Beautiful! I was born in Seldovia and my Mother was from Nanwalek (English Bay) and my dad was a Scotsman from Scotland!
I stumbled across this video many years ago after we moved to the Lower 48. Saved the link because I miss, and really enjoy seeing Homer, Seldovia and the surrounding areas. Thank you so much for putting this together and sharing your memories. I have also shared this to the Historical Homer page on facebook - so you likely have had a bump in views over the past couple days.
I grew up in Homer and moved back here 19 years ago. My best friend's dad was an engineering warrant on the Ironwood starting around 1970 or 71 when they moved here. These pictures bring back memories, since most of the old buildings are gone and Homer is not the same town as it was back then.
I served on the Ironwood up until her last cruise. It's amazing to look at your pictures of her, and to see that not much had changed from your time to my time. Great pictures of Alaska too.
My family moved to Homer in the summer of 1969. I was 12, and for a young boy...I had fallen into heaven! It was just like this. My father was a commercial bush pilot, so we saw this from the air, anytime we wanted to tag-along.
Hi, I may be wrong, it’s been a long time, but I think I remember your dad. I think maybe we were over at your house one time. Had your dad been an Air Force pilot earlier? My wife wrote for the Cook Inlet Courier and flew around with a pilot named Clint with Homer Air to Seldovia and English Bay etc to get stories. I think Clint had a niece or cousin or something who was a friend of my wife’s. Like I say, it was a long time ago so I probably have some things wrong. Thanks for the comment, it’s great to think about those times, which in some ways don’t seem that long ago after all. Steve. stevejdouglass@yahoo.com
@@stevejdouglass That's him. He has been dead for about 8 years, still loved and remembered. Clint would be Clint Reise, cousin may be Kelly Haines? Married to Kim Seekins? Totally guessing which cousin on that point! It was not that long ago, Steve. Geologically speaking.
Thanks for the comments. Native88, are you living in Homer now? How about you eichkoenig have you made it back for the Spring? Socalcrown was the Ironwood based in Kodiak when you were aboard. We used to go on fisheries patrol in the Bering Sea...kind of interesting.
absolutely gorgeous pictures! what's the title of the song used as background music? the tune sounds really familiar, but I can't quite put my finger on it.
I served on the ironwood when she was in kodiak island. Man could that ship every take a beating. I had never in my life witnesed what the ocean was capable till I was crossing the alaskan gulf on her. There is not one movie on the internet that demonstrates what I seen the ocean do.
Bryan, Thanks for the comment. I looked at some of the videos you have posted and liked them. Congratulations on your upcoming retirement in Homer. Our captain retired there-Leroy Krumm. He was a great role model for us crew members. Also, one of the deck officers, one of the engineering NCOs and probably some of the other crew retired in Homer. Thanks again, Steve Douglass. stevejdouglass@gmail.com
There were two Warrant Engineers up in Homer when I was there. First, Tom Grimes who, unfortunately passed a few years after he rotated back to CONUS and before he got to retirement age. I think Paul Flowers took his place. What was the name of your friend’s dad. Thanks for the comment. Steve Douglass. stevejdouglass@gmail.com

thanks for uploading, wonderful pictures a true treasure. Anyone who has been there knows what your talking about. Love it.
Joseph, Thanks. Sorry about your dad’s passing. My dad and mom are still with me every day even though they’ve been gone quite a while.
I'm on the Hickory, we love it here. Retiring in 2019 and making Homer our new home :)
Thanks,
I looked at some of your videos and really liked them.

Absolutely Fantastic!!! ah the dreams of such a simple yet elegant time.
@tyme2flylydia Thanks for the comment. We're hoping to visit Homer and Seldovia sometime this year.
