- I was having problems charging my brand new PS3 controller
so after trying almost every trick in the book i found out that it could be the USB cable
it wasn't listed anywhere, and i didn't find anything suggesting it online.
So i thought perhaps a lot of people could have this problem and with no solution, they just might think something is broken
So hopefully this can help solve your ps3 controller charging problem if you've tried everything else

YES u can use a phone charger cable & YES it will charge your controllers for older PS2 or PS3 . BUT the charger cable MUST be a USB 2.0 Mini-B5-pin on one end & a 2.0 Type A on the other end. DO NOT GET MICRO charger cables this is for new PS4 or PS5.

Topias Salakka 100% chance it is the controller that is broken not anything else then. if you test it on that many different cables/consoles then there is no chance of it not being the controller itself. have you tried on pc?
So my PS3 kiosk cable (the long one with the weight that comes with the kiosk) won't work with controller. Not sure if the kiosk cable is just not meant for my controller or dead battery. Guess I'll have to buy both another cable and battery. *sigh*

Right now I've just got my controller from ebay, and the system...I still don't have another HDMI cord or AV cord yet to actually bring up the PS3 menu to even tell if its working. But I've had it plugged in to charge now for over an hour, and its still just the one light blinking...Aren't the other lights supposed to light up as it begins charging? Please help me! I really don't have enough money to freaking buy another controller if this one is somehow faulty. Also, I reset the controller with a pin before I began attempting to charge...I've still gotta wait a few more days to get a freaking AV or HDMI cord to actually ATTEMPT PLAYING!! Again, please help me! ;_;

If there is indeed an issue with the controller battery internally, there is a years warranty to cover this. The controllers purchased independantly of the console are covered with the store it was purchased from.

Thank you, this helped immensely. What sucks is that I can't charge it using any USB port (from computer or using a USB hub). I have to keep my PS3 on and have my controller hooked up to it.

I had the same issue year a ago. I had 2 other Sony cables that went to a camera I had. If the controller battery was fairly charged up it would charge, but if I was down to 2 bars it wouldn't unless I went to the original PS3 cable. This happens to many other devices as well. Apple devices are infamous for that especially the power adapters.
@Anthony Okeiyi if your controller is not charging than you have a few problems. You have a bad battery in the controller, you have a bad charging cable, or both. If you know someone who has a PS3 you can use theirs and figure out what the issue is. Good luck
The red light on top is not blinking because it's already fully charged it will only blink when it's battery has been drained indicating it's charging if you keep it plugged into the ps3 the battery will never go dead
I'm glad to see that I'm not the only idiot who was experiencing this problem. All along I thought I was using the stock charger, but I must've accidentlly switched them out at some point. I was ready to call SONY support, which wouldve just probably irritated me more. Thanks for the video. Especially the part about the "thicker" USB cable. That's what saved the day.
My Controler works only when is pluged in the ps3, the cable is original.
It is charging for 3h and it doesnt work but on tv it says "charging complete" so what to do?

Hmm, my PS3 controller wasn't charging because it was plugged inside the wrong USB port. I plugged it into the second one and it started charging!

Simple but true, this was the cause of my PS3 not charging. Even after replacing the batteries, it would not charge even with the cables supplied with the new batteries. I don't get why some cables don't work, but I'm just glad they stopped using these cables as I don't seem to have this issue with other USB type cables.

To those whose controllers not charge. It could be that you have mistreated your controller by using it for a while then charging after even though it does not need charge making it slowly adjust to charging only the little that is left making your controller slowly hold less charge

My PS3 controller wont charge, it blinks for a few seconds as normal but then it goes solid red and it says on screen "Charging Failed" then repeats, i use the default cable and im starting to think after 6 years of perfect use my controllers is dying. :(

Thanks! I can't believe this was my problem... I actually tried two different cables when it first crapped out on me and neither of them worked so I assumed it was something else. After pressing the reset button several times and taking my controller apart to take a look, I decided to try one last cable I had lying around and it worked.
Don't dismiss this seemingly obvious solution. It might just work for you like it did for me.
Mine shows that it charges, but once I stick the cable out it stops charging and looses the connection to the machine. It doesn't matter how long I leave the controller charging. Therefore its battery needs a replacement.
That just pissed me off like nothing ever has before.

Awesome dude! I had this problem and tried your solution and it works! Thanks! I was ready to buy a new one. I had bought a new battery thinking the battery itself was the problem. What's weird is I have 2 controllers and one of them charges with the extension cable but one didn't. Once again, thanks for the helpful video and these assholes criticizing it probably don't have the problem and didnt try your solution. I did and it works.

Worked for me! Thanks cause this had been an issue for months. I'd misplaced the original and thought nothing of it since the aftermarket cable "seemed" to work. Thanks again.

Your non working cable was perhaps just a charge cable with just + and - wired, it's not uncommon. The PS3 controller wants a data connection as well.
The Problem with mine is, Even the stock Charge Cable won't work with my Controller. Does anyone have any tips?
Also, The same Cord works with the spare controller I got last christmas. So is it a Dead Controller? I sure hope not, damn thing cost me £25.

I'd say change the battery. It's easy enough.

Thanks man, this worked for me. Only one of the 3 ps3 controllers needs the thicker cable. Weird.
Mine works even with a 3rd party usb cable. Remember also to replace the battery if your controller charges fully but last only a little bit. Keep in mind these are old pieces of hardware.

yeah um i got the regular one for my controller but it doesnt work. idk why but when i charge it, it will say please put a usb charger to charge the battery but when i turn off it and then on, theres one bar always. im really confused.

I have this issue where all cables charge the controller, but only if hooked up to PS3 console. If I plug it into PC or hook up an apple box charger to outlet, or any other USB source I get nothing.
Thankfully I watched this vid having bought an unofficial cable from an auction website as I had misplaced my original.
The copy worked whilst plugged in but wouldn't charge the controller. The original which I eventually found did charge the controller.

I found a PS3. I didnt have enough to get a real sony controller. Now I just bought a used one. and this is how my ps3 controller light flashes when try to charge it:
1)All lights flash
2)Player one light is solid red
3)Player one light flashing
4)Off

My controller's problem isn't on any RUclips videos. Can anyone tell me how to fix it? My controller turns on just fine, but as soon as it connects, it scrolls all the way down for no reason. As soon as it turns on, the controller moves it to the bottom icon. The only button I can press is the PS button and only if I hold it down. Even then I still can't turn the console/controller of from the controller because none of the buttons work. Do I just need a new controller? Because sometimes it says it's charging and sometimes it doesn't.

Figured out why my controllers were dead. I tried to plug charge cable into wall adapter to charge, nothing happened. I decided to plug charge cable into my PC and they are recognized and charging now.

You can use the shorter usb cables with a pc and it charges it. Just not directly connected to a PS3 like shown in the video.

You need a cable that can transmit data. A lot of mini usb cables can’t.
It stops after blinking for 1min or so. After that only 1 light is lit without blinking. Does it mean ,it stops charging?
The weird thing is that I have a mini USB cable that charges my bluetooth earphones and Wii U Pro controller, but NOT my PS3 controller. Must need more amperage or something. Tried a different cable, and now it charges. Thanks!
