- You’ve probably heard of names like the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and the Nasdaq Composite being used frequently in daily financial news or even in general conversations about the stock market, but what do these names represent?
The Dow Jones, S&P 500, and the Nasdaq Composite are the 3 main stock indices in the United States. A stock index is simply a measure of the performance of a group of stocks. Stock market indices are mainly used as indicators of how a specific country’s stock market and economy are performing.
Stock market indices are also used as benchmarks for investors to compare the performance of the stocks they own. For example, an investor with a strong stock portfolio will match or outperform the performance of the index it is being compared to. There are hundreds of stock market indices around the world such as the DAX which measures the performance of 30 major German companies on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and the Nikkei which measures the performance of the 225 most important companies in Japan, but let’s take a closer look at the top 3 indices in the United States and how to invest in them.

I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.
I feel your pain mate, as a fellow retiree, I’d suggest you look into passive index fund investing and learn some more. For me, I had my share of ups and downs when I first started looking for a consistent passive income so I hired an expert advisor for aid, and following her advice, I poured $30k in value stocks and digital assets, Up to 200k so far and pretty sure I'm ready for whatever comes.

I started stacking to SAVE wealth. I've always been the type of person to spend my entire paycheck. I hate having money just sit in the bank. I am under pressure to grow my reserve of $950k. before I turn 60, I would appreciate any advice on potential investments.
I can feel your pains. New guys need to realize the risks that come with all of this. You could lose it all and you could win it all. It goes both ways. Second, what works for A may not necessarily work for B and you should not be a bandwagon investor. A good number of folks are raking in huge 6 figure gains in this downtrend, but such strategies are mostly successfully executed by folks with in depth market knowledge.

Rich people have assets, which are inflation proof. On the other hand, earned income is vulnerable to inflation. That's why the rich get richer in inflationary environments. An example, wealthy person may own several homes, rental properties(Commercial/Residential), businesses, productive land, equities, bonds, etc. The average W2 employee gets taxed the highest rate, they own almost no productive assets.

Investment on risk assets (stocks, crypto, etc) is easier with proper guidance, especially from a proffessional it really helps reduce the chances of running into losses

The S&P 500 finished down 20% in 2022. This means long term investors have a great starting point in 2023. Here are 4 very popular ETF’s: $VOO- S&P 500 fund $VTI- Total US stock market $QQQ- High growth, tech $SCHD- Growth + Dividends| I just tallied my dividends for the year;$167k Blessed and grateful, disciplined and focused.
My "boring" index funds just paid me over $6,000 in dividends last month. This is money that i can choose to spend without having to sell any of my shares. But for now i have it all set to reinvest to buy me even more index funds.
Anyone have recommendations for a reliable monthly investment? I hope to ultimately supplement my income from work with a monthly income from investments. I will still make long-term investments, but it would be wonderful to have a little additional money each month.
The best course of action if you lack market knowledge is to ask a consultant or investing coach for guidance or assistance. Speaking with a consultant helped me stay afloat in the market and grow my portfolio to about 65% since January, even though I know it sounds obvious or generic. I believe that is the most effective way to enter the business at the moment.

I just learned something… the s&p was actually started in 1926 however it was only compromised of 90 companies in 1957 is when it was expanded to 500.

You don't have to pick one. Most of the stocks you will pick will fall into one of these Indicies.

The S&P, The Nasdaq, The Russel, The Dow Jones, SPY & TSLA etc. They've all failed since the beginning of 2022. The S&P lost about 13-14 percent and more since the beginning of the year. And Because of that there are a lot of opportunities that you can take if you are willing to profit from the market.

The crypto market continues to go bearish as a result of the Russian invasion on Ukraine. This act has triggered and endangered global economy this includes stocks, bitcoin, alts, oil, gold etc.. ill say it's out rightly wrong to just sit back hold and wait to continue incur more losses along the line, instead find a way to grow your portfolio. Hi. Can you please tell me what the red negative or green positive figure means on the s&p 500 and other indexes? The one that changes every few seconds. Is it like how much points the stock is up or down when compared to the what it opened at for that day? What is it? Please answer!!
It's how much (in $'s) the index is either up or down for the day.

@@JustinQuiksilver No. It's simply how many $'s the index has moved up or down. An index/stock price itself doesn't show the total value of that stock/index which is where I think you're getting confused.
