Chet Atkins was known as "Mr. Guitar" & "The Country Gentleman". He was an American musician, occasional vocalist, songwriter & record producer. His legendary career spanned six decades from the 40s-90s. He was known as as one of the best guitarists with his electric speed, melodic playing & unique finger-picking guitar style. Chet Atkins also played the mandolin, fiddle, banjo & ukulele. He won numerous awards & influenced a lot of artists & musicians. He recorded an album (Neck & Neck) in 1990 with Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits that shows the great talent of both men.

The genres weren't so broad as now. You made my morning!! Watch any video when they show closeup of him playing . Classical Gas or anything by him. Alip takes it slower and more on the neck of the guitar. I'm sure Chet could have also. He just was so unique when he came out playing. Rarely a day goes by that I don't need to get my Chet fix, either through the man himself, or some of his more recent disciples (like Australian Tommy Emmanuel and Englishman Richard Smith, to name but a couple) whose finger-style playing techniques were influenced by Chet, and to some degree, by Merle Travis and Jerry Reed.
The dude's a legend.. There's videos of him playing with Jerry Reed and Les Paul. I watched videos of him a couple of years ago, including some of his old instructional videos. Was trying to learn how to pick like him.. I was obsessed with his rendition of Wildwood Flower, particularly the version that he played on an old program (possibly in the early 1950's) that was in black and white. I watched other videos of him playing it, but it seems like he plays it a little different each time.. I remember watching a video of him teaching one of his songs, and he says that each time he plays a riff, he tries to play it differently within the same song.

Atkins' signature picking style was inspired by Merle Travis. Other major guitar influences were Django Reinhardt, George Barnes, Les Paul and later Jerry Reed. His trademark picking style and musicianship brought him admirers within and outside the country scene, both in the United States and internationally. Atkins produced records for The Browns, Porter Wagoner, Norma Jean, Dolly Parton, Dottie West, Perry Como, Elvis Presley, The Everly Brothers, Eddy Arnold, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves, Jerry Reed, Skeeter Davis, Waylon Jennings and many others. Among many honors, Atkins received 14 Grammy Awards as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, nine Country Music Association Instrumentalist of the Year awards, and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum.

His older brother was in a band with Les Paul, back in the day. Chet was a true virtuoso. His Starry Starry night is moving.
