"A picture is worth a thousand words"! A mechanic asked mean what a "Z" drive was on a tug.! Is there anything that Google can't answer? Many thanks. Peter Hannah
Persistance Lydeccer that's a smaller one, judging from the size it's probably a 1500 hp motor to it. But with that kort knozzle arpund if it's acts like a 2k. But we have a boat in our fleet that's a z drive and it is impressive with its maneuvers.
Wow..Idk those would turn that kinda rpm..I,m an Engineer on an Inland River Towboat Our EMD Main Engines turn 900 tailshaft,s are gear reduction down to 200 at the wheel,s.. So that prop is definitely turning some rpm,s....
And this technically is not a Z drive, a Z drive has a power input at one end of a horizontal shaft the other end a gear set transferring power to a vertical shaft at the other end of the vertical shaft is another set of gears transferring to another horizontal shaft. Which is typically seen in an I/O drive. This is simply a horizontal shaft with an electric motor or possibly a hydraulic motor at one end and a propeller at the other.
It's a five pump set mounted directly on the aft end of MTU Series 4000 8 cylinder engines. No shafts anywhere aside from the lower piston pump going to the wheel, all hydraulic power through hoses.
I would have liked to shot that housing and front bearing with my temp gun to see the effects of not having the benefit of sea water coolant? or the benefit of thrust bearing on an unloaded gear set?
Usually the rpm of a diesel isn't but 2k at the highest. Diesel provide low torque and when that is in the water will tear threw the water and the help of the cones producess more power.
Mr1876354902 Tug boats are way longer, heavier and have a much larger draft and beam than a speed boat. The power on there might make a speed boat go very fast but a tug boat is different. Same with cars, put a typical 2 litre 4 cylinder engine in a car and it will move along just fine. Put it in a semi truck and it will barely be able to move it.
when the day's too hot and you find your ship's propeller to be more chiller than your normal electric fan
Haha, yes! Lol...
I would like to know how many rpm the propeller does
I didn't know propellers that big can spin that fast! Wow
It’s spinning in air, not water, that’s why it’s spinning that fast.
3:38 this guy was playing with his life
I thought the same exactly! 😮
3:38 If I were him, I would never go near a huge spinning propeller, that thing is really a giant food processor!
it turns so fast like a desk fan !
I thought it was small until that guy walked past it

I hear that running a marine engine out of the water like they did in this video is a sure way to toast the shaft bearings.
There's no shaft. It's a z drive
Definitely scary, that's one big propeller
That incredibly fast. Don't know how much speed drop when submerged but at that speed with wide fan , that could be massive thrust.

I'm so afraid of it yet I cannot look away
Mike Wish same I’m terrified of propellers and huge fans
i scare the propeller when i was a kid,the sound of the ducted fan and the rotating motion make me scarr
@@notakilla7674 protected by rings it is safe for marine life and divers
@@TheAbderaman not if they are going in reverse then you get sucked in
It will take off. I would like to see them working at full speed in water. Just to see how fast it would turn with water as a resistance
How fast does she move through the air at flank?
XD

Thanks for sharing, excellent video!

Chuck a vice in there 😂
If this was on a bass boat your hole shot would be immaculate lmao
That’s scary as heck

Oh no sorry but your comment is so wrong from start to end

Electric Motor like Locomotive
What is the efficiency of the hydraulic motor?
Looks like that might be Nat'l Maintenance ship yard?
But does it blow?
Bro thy are not ment to spin that fast or out of water
Ist das ein Flugzeug Motor oder???😁👍
Ein normaler Schleppbootmotor, aber ohne Wasserwiderstand dreht sich der Propeller viel schneller.
Does the prop still have full power when the drive is rotating?
+John Martling yes
whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmEeeeeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhrrrrrrrrr!!!!!
Wow, with that kind of rpm, you can see why they have the power they do.

Bradley Beyer The prop can be geared up or down, making the max engine rpm a moot point.
Big fan
Safety first ☹️
Is the motor electric?
Someone could’ve at least tossed an apple in it…..
Is that electrically driven?
Sure that this is a Tug Boat? With that Rpm it looks more like a Speed Boat to me
Mr1876354902 I think the prop spinning at high speed because she spinning in air and not in water

What type of propeller that can revolve 360° ?
Tug boat propellers can turn completely around , that's what gives them their maneuverability in water during their operation.
Sounds lije an airplne to take off heatinh engine.....
Stick a pencil to the front, get a sharpener, boom.
Go stick your hand in it.
dry running at high speeds........
The tech supt ought to be fired
This is an ultimately stupid move
Excellent. Ty for sharing
It's not icsacly a 'dry' dock...
"icsacly"
Grammar...do you know it? its "Exactly" not "Icsacly".
