Yet another absolute classic pop single from those loveable Dodos, She Smiled At Me is written and sang by none other than the elusive Joseph Lemmon.
While another version was recorded for the album and was sung by Johnny McHaclameny, Gramaphone Records decided to use this version as the single (which is honestly surprising as it is a much more gritty and psychedelic edition of the song, with the Johnny version being very tight and poppy! The Johnny version is the one that appears on the full album, 'Up The Block'.
When asked about the song in an interview, Joseph said, "I wrote this after me and the lads had just "had a puff" and I had went on a walk in London, near Hyde Park. I saw this girl who was a complete knockout, and she gave me this warm smile as we passed each other. I wanted to talk to her, but my nerves kicked in and I just kept walking. SO when I got back, I knocked this song out in about 10 minutes, coming at it from the point of view of having actually talked to her after she smiled at me. Maybe she was the one? I guess I'll never know".
