As soon as I saw a Miss Hubnut video, I instantly clicked to watch it. You have such a warm charisma with your history videos, love them. Thank you Miss H and Ian.
Laughed out loud when you read that bit about 'discharge of conjugal duties' on Margaret Jones' gravestone, I mean, what the hell?! 🤣🤣Very instructive and enjoyable tour, thank you!
Thank you for more inspiration and a new place to stop and visit. 🙂 Besides making the bridge lighter, the spandrel holes also help prevent damage to, or flooding upstream of, the bridge. If they weren't there, once the arches were full in times the river was in full flow, the water would back up upstream of the bridge and either go over the river banks causing floods or over the bridge top. In the latter case the bridge would likely be destroyed by the excess weight of water piled up against it or flowing over it.
Also, being very pedantic, the holes themselves are only part of the spandrel. Spandrel is the term for the whole area between the arch and the roadway deck. Where the spandrel has a hole like this it is known as a pierced spandrel.
I also worry about the future of the coracles but am more worried about the future of the fish. I suspect that fish populations have been decreasing over the years, as they have in almost all rivers. It has been good to see a new Miss Hubnut post.
Had a family caravan on coracle's holiday park cenarth for the last 16 years sadly had to sell it this year following the loss of my mother, always loved Cenarth and spent much of my childhood holidaying there , such a beautiful and historic area.
Absolutely brilliant video miss hubnut and Ian brilliant filming 👍Absolutely fascinating video and history of Wales it's absolutely beautiful country brilliant
Absolutely fantastic video. You are such a natural presenter. I find you very calming. Even my cats settled down with your voice. Thank you such for the lovely tour. Peace Love and hugs to you and Ian and of course the Hubletts . 👍✌️❤️🤗
Lovely to see you back on your channel Miss Hubnut. Again, a wonderful video and I very much enjoy the historical facts and information. Hope yourself, Ian and the hublets are keeping safe and well.
That bridge is gorgeous.. I've never seen anything like it! If you're into old bridges, go to Maidenhead, where the longest, flattest brick built arch bridge in the world (Brunel, 1839) still carries the GWR over the Thames.
The spandrals in the Cenarth bridge are not only to lighten the structure, but also are extremely important to allow flood water to flow through, otherwise the bridge could be under pressure and could collapse, I used to work in the garage in Cenarth during the 1970,s and have seen the water level rise until it poured through where you were standing! I also knew Bernard Thomas, he lived in Llechrhyd, near the bridge, and he had a workshop there, and hand-made the type of Teifi coracle that you portrayed, yes poaching has always been a feature on the Teifi, we lived in Cilgerran, downstream from Cenarth, and this village was well known for poaching! Thank you for this video, it bought back many memories of the area, we moved from this area many years ago and we are now in Brittany, France. Dioch 'n fawr.
Brittany, how lovely! Are you in any of the areas that twin with Emlyn and whatnot? Lovely to hear your stories about the Teifi and thank you for the bridge information
@@misshubnut thanks for the reply, our area of Brittany is called Finisterre, and is more twinned with Cornwall than Wales, as there is a Brittany Ferries connection from Plymouth to Roscoff, the British have been visiting here for over a hundred years, but since Brexit that has drastically affected the number of British people who want to live or have holiday homes, we have many other summer visitors from all over Europe, which give our region an International flavour.
The spandrels are deceiving, they don't look that big until you stood inside one. I love watching your videos Carly because your knowledge and passion really shine through and you're such a natural in front of the camera.
