@@friedrichnietzsche7376 Byzantine walls have been besieged dozens of times before. It had the strongest walls in the world. Thanks to these walls alone, many invading powers gave up on conquering the city. Except for a 21-year-old teenager. First he built the Anadolu Hisarı and closed the sea route. Then he invested in the biggest technology, balls. He personally participated in the casting of the cannon and even made calculations of the mortars. The Byzantines had closed the Golden Horn sea with chains. Thereupon, Sultan Mehmet drove the ships from the land and landed his ships in the Golden Horn. Istanbul was surrounded by 3 walls and was suitable for defense with a small number of soldiers. Without such a strategy and determination of the 21-year-old sultan, the invasion would certainly not have been successful. That's why we call Mehmed the successful sultan, after all, this man destroyed the Roman empire...

The level of Chadery to charge into the midst of an invading army as the battle is lost, or to sail a fleet of warships over a mountain. One can only be thankful that these two fought as enemies. Despite some of the historical inaccuracies in this Netflix Documentary if their ones thing they did well it was showing us how the Fall of Constantinople was not a foreshore event from the perspective of the Romans and Ottomans that was going to happen in 1453. I find that as student of history we all to often look back at everything that has happen and always just naturally assumed it was inevitable.

This Netflix series is telling history the wrong way. When I watched it, I thought for a moment that Fatih Sultan Mehmet would not be able to take Istanbul. It is completely wrong for Fatih to conquer Istanbul with the help of the Genoese and other countries. In addition, a Turkish hero who killed Justinian and Ulubatlı Hasan was the first to put the flag on the walls of Istanbul. Although there are contradictions for this hero, this information is correct. Akşemseddin was the mentor of Fatih Sultan Mehmet. He has a very knowledgeable and devout personality. Fatih Sultan Mehmet; Hafiz at the age of 9, the sultan at the age of 12, conquering Istanbul at the age of 21, destroying 2 empires, 4 kingdoms, 11 principalities, speaking 7 languages, the inventor of the mortar and a great ruler who opened the era and closed the era. Historians agree that he was one of the rare people who had knowledge of east and west. During his thirty-year reign, he destroyed two empires, four kingdoms, and eleven principalities. Before he dies, he leaves very important laws to the future emperors for the state to continue in security and prosperity. He fell ill and died on his way to Italy. Bells were rung and victory ceremonies were held in Europe for a week. They announced his death as 'The Great Eagle is Dead'."

This maximized the efficiency of the Spartan phalanx formation. Meanwhile he also didn't have to worry about protecting civilians, preventing widespread panic, starvation and constant shelling from huge cannons. And he already had some Greek city states fighting alongside him and could always rely on the other Greek city states organizing more armies. The Italian city states held back most help until the soldiers could be *payed* and many of them already traded with the Ottoman Empire for goods and earned more from this so as far as they saw it they backed whoever payed them better.

    • @paulallen8109
      @paulallen8109 4 года назад +9

@Hammody Ahmed Even the strongest walled city can't sustain itself without enough money and resources to maintain a flow of soldiers, food and goods for the people inside. This is why long blockades are so efficient in starving an enemy out. Btw, the Crusaders of the Fourth Crusade managed to invade Constantinople in 1204 and sacked the city. The walls didn't stop the crusaders which held the city until 1261 when the Greeks (Niceans) reconquered it. This 1204 sack btw was the mortal blow from which East Rome (Byzantine Empire) never recovered.
Even Mehmet II's advisors questioned why he had to conquere Constantinople when the Byzantine Empire was merely a rump state remnant of what it once was and posed no threat to Ottoman interests. Especially not since the wealthy Italian city states already were paying for goods they traded with the Ottomans while the by now decimated Byzantine Empire had virtually nothing to barter with. By the end of its existence the Italian city states and Rome began squeezing the Byzantines themselves and demanded that they convert to Catholicism or they'd receive no help.
Without outside help a siege will almost always succeed. The only siege I can think of in which outside help still couldn't defeat the invaders was Caesar's victory at Alesia over Gaul (present day France) where Caesar's siege of Alesia became a siege of his legions from angry Gaulish leaders.
My point is that the walls of Constantinople were only ever going to buy the defenders inside some time but that enough would never going to save them. Fact is most historians say that even if Mehmet II's siege had failed Constantinople still would have fallen 10-30 years later because it was by all accounts broke and powerless. No walls can remedy that serious deficit.

Our Prophet Muhammed(SAV) said " Constantinople will be conquered what a great conqueror, Leader He is and what great warriors they are "
Fatih Sultan Mehmets fathers dream became his obsession. Mehmet was ridiculed, not least by his own grand vizier, who called his obsession a folly youth. Mehmet ignored such sagacity. He prepared for the invasion by constructing the fortress of Rumeli Hisari on the Bosphorus to ensure stability and security of his supply lines. In may 1453 Mehmet gave a call for Jihad. Addressing his troops as Ghazis/Gaziler(Warriors of Allah),he inspired them with the Prophets prediction that Constantinople would be ruled by the faithful.
On 29 May 1453 his army made the blood flow like rain after a storm and corpses float to the sea like melons on a canal, according to Nicolo Barbaro. The last Byzantine emperor Constantine II, fought to the end of his life and his empire. some 30,000 Christians were either enslaved or sold. Sultan Mehmet rode on a white horse towards the Cathedral of Hagia Sofia/Haji Sofya, mother of all churches, built in the sixth century by Justinian. He dismounted in front of the cathedral, picked up a handful of dust, poured it over his turban and proclaimed the shahadah " There is no god but Allah, Muhammed(SAV) is His Prophet ". The cathedral in that instant became a mosque.Mehmet prayed for the success of the house of Osman
He was only 20 years old. One of his first decision was to order the death of a grand vizier who had taunted him for dreaming of Constantinople/Istanbul.
Istanbul its Turkish name does not mean the city of Islam. It's a variation of a Greek phrase eis teen polin, and stands for " into the city"for the Turkish peasant a visit to the capital was a clearly an event. What Mehmet did was to corrupt a corruption, and devise a variation called " Islambol"/the City of Islam. Constantinople was to become the new center of the power of Islam, the base from where Ghazis could renew their thrust towards Christian Europe. Within 2 years of his fatah/fetih, conquest the Fatih the conqueror was dreaming of Rome. Like his grandson Suleyman Selim, Mehmet saw himself as another Alexander and had Arrian's life of the Macedonian read out to him every day. Alexander is one of the ancient heroes referred to in the Quran and a legitimate model for an Islamic warrior.
The Ulema reminded Mehmet that victory had come from Allah, and he did not argue,he interpreted it as a sign of Allah's blessing for the House of Osman. Preachers put out stories that saints in white robes, led by the Prophet Elijah had fought in Mehmet's army on the day Constantinople fell. as if to confirm this divine help, and to link this achievement with the Prophets Hadith on Constantinople, the grave of Abu Ayyub Ansari was discovered at the Golden Horn, against the walls that had not succumbed in 669. Ansari was one of the companions of the Prophet and one of the commanders of the Ummayad army during the second siege of the Byzantine capital. In 1459, Mehmet built a mosque at the site of the grave, which became a point of pilgrimage. The area, called Eyyup,is still a celebrated enclave. A second mosque, completed in 1470, on the site of the Church of Holy Apostles, has the Prophets prediction for Constantinople inscribed in golden letters.

Byzantine walls have been besieged dozens of times before.

The walls was from Theodosios time... Extremely old.... Eastern Rome had given countless battles with Arabs and Avars before and Persians and Slavs.
Cruaseders finished it by taking its treasures. The horses outside of Saint Marcus Church is "awards" from Constantinople.
The Empire was in its worst position.
And Westerns did not help at all. Except a few.

Was impossible for others because in that times the cannons still wasn't invented/introduced in Europe and probably the romans was in a better situation than 1453 where was just a matter of time to fall. He take a greatest city, yes, but except for simbolism, wasn't a great victory, but a easy one. Also, Mehmed wasn't so religious and probably he din't cared a lot of a "Bless from Allah", considering how was descripted by some of his contemporary historians.
