Before Valve dropped their strong TF2 support, it really felt like Cactus Canyon and Asteroid were being set up early to play the part of the Big Finale maps that tie in with the TF2 Comics - with Asteroid being tied into the rocket that escaped Earth with all the Australium. Part of me hopes that one day they might retool Asteroid to actually be that map.
I encountered several people on an Uncletopia server once who had never even seen or heard of plr_nightfall before and didn't know that it was an official map, and they were acting all confused and perplexed by the map's existence. It made me feel old.
I just nominated Hydro on a London Uncletopia server and got enough people to actually vote for it. At first some people wanted to rtv once the map was on, but we actually played it to the end. It all looked like it will end it a stalement, but in the ende it ended with a win for my team. I had an absolute blast and was glad people didn't abandon the server when the map came on. Playing old and forgotten maps successfully really warms my heart.
Yeah. A leszer RUclipsr wouldn’t timestamp his stuff, but with timestamps I’m more willing to give a video my time since I know whether I’ll be interested in the topics discussed
I love Hydro to death honestly. Im mad it never caught on, because unbalanced to a point by design asymmetrical maps are awesome and really shake things up. That said, I understand why its so hard for people to get around on them, and unless you pay attention to the pre-game map to know which two zones are facing off its really hard to know whats going on. Alas lol.

I haven't played this game since 2013 and I already knew Hydro was going to be listed 😂 It was pretty much dead even back then, I do remember Yukon being fairly popular back in the day though. Great video!
A slight cure for a burnt tongue: Drizzle honey or put dry white sugar on the burned area, leave it dangling out of your mouth for like 30 seconds-1 minute, this pulls the liquid from the burn and makes it feel a lot better. Just wash your tongue off when you're done. Swear to god works every time.
fkin love hydro, i have vivid core memories of playing tf2 for the first time in 2007 rushing the right side of reds attack flank with 5 battle medics all trying to learn how to use the syringe gun
I firmly believe that pipeline and nightfall are good, fun maps. The only reason nobody plays on them is because 99% of players who are queuing into plr just want to play a free for all team deathmatch on Hightower and not actually play payload.
I miss rd_asteroid, the beta era of rd_asteroid feels like a fever dream now. I distinctly remember one of the earlier variants of the map and it was so fun. Robot Destruction walked so that Player Destruction could run. tc_hydro is an interesting one... it's like a 5cp map with a built-in stalemate breaking mechanic that doesn't work... as theoretically you can keep swapping the middle 4 points back and forth between teams indefinitely, but each cap resets the map, making engineer a little bit harder to turtle
I felt like Hydro could work if player can vote for the team where to attack and it should be attack/defend to solve the stalemate and constant playing back and forth each section.
Fun fact, for a time Cactus Canyon had a SECOND map between the current first and final...and I have no idea why it was removed. It was added, then removed, over it's life time. So when Canyon was first added, there was 2 stages. Then there was 3...then it went back to 2.
My tf2 experience started with RD_Asteroid. As a new player, it was satisfying to score points for my team without having to stand on a control point waiting to die. This was where I started playing engineer, because I realized pretty quickly that no sentry= no wins. And as a mostly pyro player (cuz aiming was hard) having all of the cliffs was fun.
It is absolutely wild to think that someone's introduction to TF2 was on RD_Asteroid, on a map that wasn't complete, in a game mode that was never finished.
To be technical, cactus canyon had something like 14 updates, which are all archived. It had a second stage that was cut. Anyway I'm a hydro homie. I am the MASTER of territorial control.
Hydro is actually quite fun to play on if you're playing as Engineer. I know this because every time I've played a match on Hydro I've had to play as Engineer because no one else on my team picks Engineer and if you don't have an Engineer defending your point on Hydro you just instantly lose.
every time my friends and I queue up with someone new I always say "lets go to camber I love camber" in a sarcastic voice and they always ask without fail "Whats camber" its a silly time haha
First played this game in 2014, and wow this video was like a trip down memory lane. I haven't played on any of these maps except Yukon and sort of Hydro if you count TF2C's 4 team variant in literally years, yet some of my earliest memories of the game take place on them. It even made me try to queue up for Pipeline and Nightfall, to no success since it took ages to find a single match that was almost completely dead. Oh well
Cactus Canyon was funny as fuck because the cart would glitch out. I'm very fond of it because the cart glitching and detaching from it's "soul" making it impossible to push was funny.

Ah my beloved Hydro if only more people understood and loved the confusing hell you are that I might be able to play more than 1 game on you before the server cries and switches maps.
Yukon is my favorite map. Its fun to play since its never gonna be a stalemate or a roll like most 5cp maps. Seriously, it will always be a back and forth which is a great experience.
Shame the guy who made asteroid and cactus canyon left valve before they got finished. At least we got player destruction from the remnants of asteroid
God I loved the sonic rush ost. Each one you chose was fitting to the map, nice job. Also Wowie I vividly remember playing on most of these maps back when I was 14 or 15. Hella wild for me to see no one play them much anymore due to many reasons such as not being fun or just not being on the map list (cactus canyon :[).
@@Dynam_ for real yo, time do be scary. Playing newly added maps feel different BUT still give me that same old feeling of wonder and mystery I got when playing a new map back when I first started playing.
This Summer I did a thing where I would play every single map available in TF2 casual. I would queue for all maps, play some time, then quit, and next time I would queue I would remove the maps I've already played. And now I remember the general layout of every single official TF2 map that is commonly available (although I'm not sure if that's much of a rare achievement for someone with ~700 hours of playtime). Every single map except for Nightfall. This map is so forgettable the only thing I remember is the name. My brain was confused for a second when you mentioned it alongside Pipeline (a map I vividly remember). My memory only came back after looking at the map's wiki, but even then I didn't recognize the 3rd stage. Maybe I should go replay it right now, after all I do enjoy the gamemode greatly. I suppose you left out the Arena mode exclusive maps for the next video. I hope you make a more in-depth video about those (plus Cactus Canyon and Asteroid) and discuss the layout since these maps are no longer accessible to the average player. Love your videos!
Yeah the area game mode and passtime would be their own video with the amount. Funny you mention Nightfall and Pipeline because when I was looking into the maps for things to talk about, I had the Notes fully taken down for Nightfall only to realise after 30 minutes I was on Pipeline!
My heart aches for Pipeline and Nightfall. I spent my early years of tf2 in 2013 playing Hightower, Pipeline, and Nightfall, with my favorite being Nightfall. With the quickplay system, payload race was considered just as respectable as any of the other gamemodes. I'd search for servers, and pick whichever one had the most players with the best ping running Pipeline. When matchmaking got released and payload race was relegated to sit with the likes of Hydro, Mann Power, and PASS time. Last time I tried searching for a pipeline game, it was swarmed with bots that I couldn't do anything about.
Asteroid is a map I always wanted to see as a CTF map. Not that half-assed "Robot Destruction", but _proper_ CTF; I think that would do the map justice. And as for Hydro, as AceTheOcarinaMaker pointed out, it works *MUCH* better as a 3-stage attack/defend map. That way, the asymmetrical nature of the map becomes a non-issue, and the layout can always be consistent.
The first game I had on plr_nightfall was bugged, having both payload carts on the last stage having fallen below the map. Some engi had been camping in the server for hours and had 600 points. I quit with 120 as trolldier. Never saw the bug again, and only managed to find the map once more.
Damn, I remember coming home after school and immedeatly going to Pipeline to unlock new weapons from Sniper vs Spy update that just dropped. Good times.
if i had to describe it, tc_hydro feels like if dustbowl was a 5cp map. i enjoy it sometimes, it's not as confusing as people point it out to be but it's horrendously chokey and small. it has the same problem as asteroid where you have to defend your point, all while while your team is trying to push into the enemy point. if your team is clueless and nobody stays to defend, you'll encounter the infamous "empty hydro point" which will easily be capped before both teams even encounter each other. honestly, hydro would be a tad bit better if every section was opened as a standalone 5cp map. it's gorgeous and canonically, expiration date was set on that same map
I have fond memories of playing on all of those maps (granted asteroid was less about the playing and more about the weirdness). Beats why all of these have faded while people still play junction…
I remember back before the jungle inferno update cactus caynon was very popular for a beta map in my country, asteroid was a 2nd option but underrated. There was a option you could choose beta maps in order to join a official server. The only reason why we played alot is because of the ping in my country you could play in no problem even if your internet suck. If i join any other official server map my ping would go over 150/200
ive made at least 14 territorial control maps. i had to redesign the philosophy of the tf2 map design in order to make them more fun. really tiny but fun. it really is an example of "bad map good game mode".
7:01 Hey, I played about 6 rounds of Hydro at the start of october, before the halloween contracts were avaible, though those rounds sucked. My team and I could't find out several times how to leave the spawn area before the enemy caped.
I've tried to play plr_pipeline on casual for So long, I remember it being the second map I ever played on and I forgot about it entirely because I got zero games past a certain point, and only remembered its existence because of an old video I stumbled into
I unironically love getting into a game with most of these maps (minus hydro) it’s such a nice change of pace from the normal maps in rotation and usually have less players so it kinda feels relaxing as weird as that may be lol, coldfront is another map I enjoy getting into that I feel is underrated
I love Yukon, and I'll always think of it as one of the most forgettable maps. The only reason I started playing on it is because someone pointed out how forgotten it is. It's cool they made a place in Canada named after it though, can't wait for Turbine to be real
Territory control seems like a great game mode, and I actually love the complexity of Hydro, but it is way too chokey in too many places. I wish a modern TC map came out.
Cactus Canyon was my favorite map. Back then I didnt had a good computer to play TF2 on despite it being a very old game. So whenever I joined a server with full of players I would have a lot of performance issues but Cactus Canyon servers had a lot of half empty servers so I would join them instead
I thought you were going to mention Arena maps. I haven't played on Offblast in years, but I have recently played on most of the maps in this video. At least more recently than Arena maps.
I literally went on asteroid servers in the beta tab with no one on just waiting for people to join. I learned all the little una and outs and had a lot of fun playing 1v1s when the one other person queuing did join
I live for obscure and forgotten maps in TF2, they are an enigma for most players nowadays, but for me I dedicate time to admire them, learn how they work, explore every path and try to convince others to play them too, because even if they may be seen as weird or bad, they deserve to have a chance in the spotlight. Btw if there are any Hydro fans out there, please I must know, I am a big fan of the map too.
I like hydro. When I played it there was also a sudden death element to it. I don’t know what it’s like anymore because as you pointed out, it’s a dead map.
i don't actually think hydro has random elements within the layouts. the way it's set up is that the different layouts aren't just individual map chunks separated by the void, but rather each territory is just a point in one contiguous map. so a blu point and a red point are chosen, the routes between them are opened up, and the routes to every other point is closed off. and i'm pretty sure that's the full extent of it, meaning the only random elements should be which points are used to make the round's layout. something like the vents being closed off isn't to shake things up, but to prevent you from wandering into the flank of the completely wrong point i think. i don't know how they managed to make "6cp but the next point keeps randomizing" so confusing, but they sure as hell did incidentally, though, this makes dismantling hydro into a cp_hydro a much simpler affair that it might first seem, to the point where you can easily google several different attempts to do so
one fond memory was when TF2 removed quickplay and made tc hydro playable. ive been playing TF2 since 2012 and ive never played hydro to the point i thought it was a brand new map.
Funnily enough, Yukon used to be pretty commonly played in TF2 Classic, which was where I played the map. I personally do not like the map and can see why live TF2 ended up burying it as you pointed it out
I played an unhealthy amount of Cactus Canyon. It's a mess of a map, horribly balanced, floating in nothingness, with a long lost middle stage, but it is probably my absolute favourite map of all time.
I never considered it this way…

I remember Asteroid being a lot more fun to play when it was still accessible, especially as Spy.
I literally went on asteroid servers in the beta tab with no one on just waiting for people to join. I learned all the little una and outs and had a lot of fun playing 1v1s when the one other person queuing did join
Loving the Sonic Rush bg music
I live for obscure and forgotten maps in TF2, they are an enigma for most players nowadays, but for me I dedicate time to admire them, learn how they work, explore every path and try to convince others to play them too, because even if they may be seen as weird or bad, they deserve to have a chance in the spotlight.
Btw if there are any Hydro fans out there, please I must know, I am a big fan of the map too.
Sounds like someone played a lotta Sonic Rush during their childhood.
Hell yeah
Twas a high quality video, the recommanded tab worked it's magic
:D
I like hydro. When I played it there was also a sudden death element to it. I don’t know what it’s like anymore because as you pointed out, it’s a dead map.
2:20 oh god not the callout
yep
Yo as a massive guilty gear and tf2 fan, your videos bring me so much joy. Thank you❤️❤️❤️
I love hydro. I play it on Valve official servers whenever i can which is surprisingly often.
Yesterday I played tf2 for the first time in years, and Yukon was one of the maps I ended up on lol
Thats me
Holy moly huge fan
i don't actually think hydro has random elements within the layouts. the way it's set up is that the different layouts aren't just individual map chunks separated by the void, but rather each territory is just a point in one contiguous map. so a blu point and a red point are chosen, the routes between them are opened up, and the routes to every other point is closed off. and i'm pretty sure that's the full extent of it, meaning the only random elements should be which points are used to make the round's layout. something like the vents being closed off isn't to shake things up, but to prevent you from wandering into the flank of the completely wrong point
i think. i don't know how they managed to make "6cp but the next point keeps randomizing" so confusing, but they sure as hell did
incidentally, though, this makes dismantling hydro into a cp_hydro a much simpler affair that it might first seem, to the point where you can easily google several different attempts to do so
one fond memory was when TF2 removed quickplay and made tc hydro playable. ive been playing TF2 since 2012 and ive never played hydro to the point i thought it was a brand new map.
It’s a unique idea that I kinda wish that valve or a community mapper would revisit with a newer look on the game
There’s a good amount of nostalgia for 2012-2014 maps, they just had that secret ingredient
Ok, I play tons of 100 player servers and Hydro is constantly in rotation so I’ve played that map a ton
Holy shit, I've been playing on and off since like 2013 and the only one of these I actually recognize is Hydro. Game's got a lotta fuckin maps
You forgot to mention, that the complete 2nd Stage of Cactus Canyon got removed, because VALVe wanted to test the last stage more
Great video!! Anyways, god bless the soldier who stood Infront of the train before being thrown off by an enemy
Me, that was me. 3:17
Your sacrifice was not in vain
Damn, Standin is soooo forgotten that it isnt on this list lmao
Standin on its own
