Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. She also warns him that she doesn’t trust him, and that her stubborn personality might not be suitable for the wife of a general. No wonder he had understood Niao Niao and when he got the chance , acted instantly.
That look..."don't cut me off"... Ling Buyi gave to shaoshang's mum was the height for me. The fear in her eyes made her realize he holds a trace of anger towards her for belittling someone he holds dearly. Leo Wu nailed this character...I can feel the presence of this episode...the pain, the respect, the love...it's truly an epic drama.
Somebody had to restore the order of things. This emperor is an unprecedented saint in C-drama history, but the way mum took advantage of that kinda made me miss Yanxi Palace levels of treatment. All in all, I was the sorriest for him when the parents tried to refuse the wedding. He was so happy at the proposal, so genuinely glad, and they just had to go and spoil it for him.
And a standing ovation to your elegance perspective of Ling's subtle expressions!!

This is such a heartbreaking episode. Imagine being insulted by your own mother in public. This is not the way to show your love to your daughter. She might have good intentions but clearly, she just doesn't care about Shaoshang and her feelings. To be belittled in front of everyone especially the king was heartless to me. I don't blame Shaoshang for agreeing to marry LB.
I agreed Shaoshang is more smart than her mother of how she handles things at least she doesn’t insult both the emperor and Ling buyi for their sincere proposal

Her mom didn't say anything untruthful it was a full disclosure and she did it to protect her kid most of all, but nothing she said wasnt true, SS lack discipline even to study when she had the chance with her parents back she chose to combat them instead of taking advantage.
I was crying when niaoniao was saying that about herself bc of her mom but when she asked buyi if he still wanted to marry someone like her, and he said "of course" with such ease and confidence and like there was no other possible answer...my heart flipped

What her mother sees as negative, LBY sees as the total opposite. Her defiance is bravery to him; her unrulyness is brilliance and strategy; her headstrong attitude is unyielding loyalty to self, which he admires the most. Her mother doesn't believe in her; he believes in everything she proposes, including how to pull an arrow out with a string :D. You know if her mother were there, she would have sneered at the idea as stupid.

As a parent that raised many children have no clue to deal with a child who’s been missing out a lot of things beside parents love and guidance growing up they should be a Shame
I can feel that pain. My mother does that to me all the time. I can't recall how many times I have felt so hurt in public by my mother's words. I have not deserved any (I am the daughter most of my friend's mum would love to have.... except my own mother). So this was incredibly hurtful when I tried so hard to live up to their expectations and give them "faces" when they are out.
When I watched the scenes where the mother belittles her, I can't help the tears from my eyes. It hurts so much!
I think ling bu yi telling everyone her positive traits made her agree on this marriage.

Nobody deserves to get disrespected and it is outrageous to shame you and your honor. Stay strong and forgive her but never forget. Keep it in your heart and change it from sadness and fury into a lesson for yourself: some people are unworthy of your live and presence. You will sore high one day dont worry
@@hqarmy231 Thank you for your kind words. I have moved on with the help of my husband and beautiful kids. I have used it as a reminder not to do the same thing to my kids. It's hard to forget because even now my parents still subject me to their passive-aggressive ways. I have learnt to gently distance myself from them in the most respectful manner.
I had to cry when Lin Buyi told her why he wants to marry her. And how strong Nao Nao is for not losing her spirit and having to fight for everything at 15 years old. So many people trample all over her and not giving her love and guidance.
I know its just a drama but its very sad to see a mother talk n treat her child like that. Line buyi is very sweet

What's so "romantic" about such proposal? No matter how much he loves her, it's obvious that she has no deeper feelings for him at this point. This marriage is basically pushed down her throat and if not handled carefully, it may bring a lot of harm to her and her family. She already have made some enemies amongst the royals by simple act of accepting the engagement. She's not some kind of Mary Sue and apart from her street smarts she has no way of defending herself against their schemes if Ling Buyi isn't around to protect her.
The king holding back his laugh before saying Princess Yucheng was drank😂was definitely great comedic relief from the intense and emotional scene that almost had me in tears

those highborn girls are sickeningly mean. you could tell the general is furious seeing how wicked those highborn girls gang up trying to harm his beloved lady. i love how gently he puts her hand on his hand to lead her through the broken jars. love even more when he purposely crushes and kicks them out of the way. the last 'slap' is his marriage congratulations to both princesses.

Sooo many undercurrents of Timing. Ling Buyi has witnessed several gossiping and bullying tactics on Cheng Shaoshang. The one outside the banquet hall was the last straw. She needs (HIS) protection and help to withstand the gangs of bullies and She Needs him NOW!: Time to propose!

I think the FL has shown top class manners. She bore the humiliation her MOTHER gave her, and still kept her parents honour by belittling herself.
And then rose above it to make her own decision about her life.
She has shown more grace than any females present there.
She rounded it up very well with her parents even when she returned home. Bravo!
and when she said "I have my pride too, I am a proud person" recognizing that she too wants to live a life with dignity! A very powerful statement that overrules her self belittling. The will to live the best way she'll know how. How many young people do we know have that kind of will/self determination without running to a shrink in that situation?

Oh my, his declaration of love for her is so immense. I love how he always backs her up and lift her spirit when her mom was the one who shoot it down. This is the kind of person u want in your life and want to surround yourself with. I love his braveness in expressing his love for her.
This whole episode was myriad of emotions for me. From happy that Ling Buyi saved her from that fall, laughing at the death stare Long Buyi gave to the fifth prince, to crying for NN being belittled by her mother publicly,to ecstatic that she accepted Ling Buyi's proposal.

When I was 16 I ran away from home, 5 year later I was back home because of my great generous father found me. And I started on my own even though I lived in the same city as her. Tell you the truth when she’s passed away and did not shed a tears .am in 60’s now.
@@wildwildwest1662 oh wow, I am so sorry to hear that. I didn’t really grew up with my parents either. I was raised by my late grandma from 2-16 yr as my parents went abroad. So my situation and reasons were different, but the psychological part of it feels the same for many that experience that type of separation in life.physical met my mom first time when I was almost 17. Like Nioan, I have learned how to adapt quickly to any situation.

Even the empress was looking at her with pity because of the nasty things her mum was saying. I just cannot fathom how horrible those princesses and their friends were to even go as far as to push her so that she could injure her face on the broken shards of pottery. If she had gotten hurt they would not have been brought to account because they are allowed to simply hurt common people. Makes me ill.
What's more sadder is that those kinds of actions are still relevant today. We may not have as many royals as before but the fact that you are rich and powerful, imagine what those people in the upper class treats common people or people deemed as poor or below them. Heartbreaking.

The conversation between Shaoshang and her parents after the engagement touched me. Her parents ran out of reasons to refute her, after Shaoshang told them how her mother depreciated her in front of the very same people who have been mocking and belittling her and her mom can't even give a credible explanation when Shaoshang cited what mom will do if it was Yangyang. Shaoshang asked them what could she have done with the majesty decree without putting the Cheng family in trouble and there was no reply even as she told them she cannot allow them to lose the glory they earned from fighting just because of her.
Indeed an absolute ignorance of the mother blinded by her controlling demeanor toward the daughter, and certainly NOT out of "love" as some people like to believe the mother is acting out of..

I disagree, wholeheartedly that Her mother doesn't love her. She doesn't show her love in an effective way that Shaoshang needs. Because Shaoshangs multiple needs can be in conflict with each other.
This drama in its entirety highlights a very important facet of love. Love is as much "duty" and responsibility, as it is emotion, feeling and "romance." Ideally Romance should feed Duty, and in turn Duty should feed Romance (we see this with Lou Yao and He Shaojun).
Shaoshang's Needs, coinciding with her Mother's duties are
- affection: especially because she has been denied it the first 15 years of her life. It is her mother's duty to provide her with affection., but...
-There is the duty that she is educated so that she can best function and move forward in society both at present and in the future.
This second duty is actually extremely important. Because shaming herself, Shaoshang shames the Cheng family, but doesn't stop there. It's a circle of shame.
(Like depression in a way) once someone brings shame to a family, the only way to unshame themselves and unshame the family is to be impressive.
Both of these are not just her failings though. The entire Cheng family bears the responsibility. Shaoshang herself bears some responsibility. She was not affectionate, nor sought affection when she returned home. She did not attempt to be a good sweet child, to be in her parents good graces when she returned home. As Shaoshang admints she was never "filial" and she bore resentment. She was not wrong to. Mother and Daughter are each others karma.
Yes, Shaoshang's mother is controlling. She has only ever raised boys, soldiers and servants. She is the daughter of a soldiers household. She was likely raised in a controlling manner from young. She has never raised girls from scratch., Yang yang, the work has been done for her. With Shaoshang, she only has a desired target, seemingly unreachable, and Shaoshang who is seemingly unteachable. For the most part She could let her daughter be, in their own household, Shaoshang would be fine.
But in the marriage prospects you can see the other duties Shaoshang's mother has and the conflicts involved.
-She has the duty to see Shaoshang married well and happy.
-She has the duty to not see Shaoshang shamed...not immediately, but in the future. It's not just the Cheng's family that would be put to shame by Shaoshang if the marriage goes poorly, but Shaoshang would have to bear the ultimate responsibility if she were repudiated. When her mother is dead and gone, Shaoshang would still have to bear with that shame.
As long as Shaoshan marries into a household where her husband and mother-in-law won't expect too much from her (Lou Yao), Her mother could ultimately let Shaoshang be. The dynamics of Yao's House, and the Second Lou house in general (Yao's mother, Brother and SIster-in-law), and the dynamics between Cheng and Lou families are such that even if the two houses are not equal, the Lous can not outright bully the Cheng's and would have to treat Shaoshang with some manner of care.
The marriage proposal from the emperor takes all of the immediate duties of above and makes them an extremely frightening prospect.
-Buyi has a reputation. Shaojun speaks of it at her and yao's banquet. Marrying him would not necessary mean marrying well and happy just on the personal interplay.
-while Buyi is not actually Royalty, it was well known he was loved by the Emperor and he was de facto raised in the palace from a young age.
-The Cheng family can do and say nothing in the face of that.
Shaoshang's mother is playing a "long game" a small bit of public shame now, to save the possibility of eternal shame and misery later.
BUT as the OP points out. Shaoshang has her own thoughts, and she does have her own duties too. Being filial, being responsible to the direct family and the ancestors. And frankly she is getting used to taking on misery for the benefit of others.

(1) It's not just that LBY's family is dangerous. Don't forget when Shaoshang wanted to marry Lou Yao, her mother ALSO said no and came up with a bunch of reasons why his family was problematic even though Shaoshang herself proved she was smart enough to fight back against them. If even Lou Yao's family is problematic enough that Shaoshang's mother wanted to say no, then what counts as a conceivably okay marriage to her? A marriage where the dude's entire family is dead so there's no one to pose any conflict for Shaoshang? That's absurd.
(2) Notice the ONLY people who ever tell Shaoshang she's mannerless and rude is (a) the rich and discriminatory ladies from other rich families and (b) her own mother. Everyone who actually knows Shaoshang knows she's actually polite and learns quickly when properly taught. You say she never tried to get in her parents' good graces - BUT SHE DID! Her father adores her and she's incredibly sweet to her father on a daily basis. She's dutiful to her third aunt and uncle and she's dutiful to her brothers. Even when her mother is going all out to humiliate her, Shaoshang is dutiful enough to know what her mother is trying to do and goes along with it and agrees with her mother's humiliation out of duty (AND she only turns back when she realises that her parents might lose their positions as officials and she thinks the filial thing to do is to ensure they don't sacrifice for her). It's only in private moments when her mother antagonises her that Shaoshang antagonises her right back. That's not karma, it's Shaoshang applying the lessons she learned in her youth - when someone tries to step on you, even if that someone is your mother, fight back. But otherwise, Shaoshang constantly proves that she totally understands duty and filial piety and she's INCREDIBLY filial to her family (I would argue she's even filial to her mother to a significant degree, considering how completely unworthy and shitty the mother is).
I agree that Shaoshang's mother loves her to some extent. But Shaoshang's mother is so self-centered and arrogant that all of it outweighs any love she has for Shaoshang. She (a) always thinks she knows best, even when it's proven that her decisions are fucking stupid, she refuses to admit she's wrong (e.g the whole shitstorm with the writing desk), (b) her OWN guilt towards abandoning Shaoshang is the reason why she thinks Shaoshang is so bad. She's literally projecting all of her own bullshit onto Shaoshang - she's so guilty about leaving Shaoshang behind and not being able to teach Shaoshang, that's why she insists on having a worldview where Shaoshang is "bad", everything she does is "bad", and she has to teach Shaoshang the right way to do things. Her own guilt is the reason why she simply cannot admit that Shaoshang actually turned out surprisingly well in spite of her abandoning her. That's why in this specific instance, she decides she's not risking a "small" bit of public shame. She knows very well that Wang Ling, whom she's SEEN fight her daughter, multiple times, will spread this shit far and wide so no one ever wants to marry Shaoshang again. But her self-centered, judgmental ass has decided it's okay to sacrifice Shaoshang completely in order to avoid potential trouble for the family, because, after all, it's "just" Shaoshang, the problematic and useless one (in her mind), and not someone precious to be protected like Yang Yang.
So yeah, Shaoshang's mother does love Shaoshang. But she's also one of the most abusive pieces of work I've ever seen - she physically abuses Shaoshang, she gaslights her, she constantly belittles her and makes her think she's worthless, and all that just because of her own guilt that she can't get over. It's not about karma. Shaoshang did nothing wrong. Her mother just sucks.
You are speaking from your omniscient as a viewer. You need to speak from the extremely limited viewpoint of Shaoshang's mother.
TO specifically speak to number 1) at the time of LBY proposal you need to Stress the "L." LI's family is not dead. his "father" is very much alive. The mess of LBY household and his stepmother and how potentially miserable she can make is a plot point. before we see those plot points revealed, Those would be facts in Shaoshang's Mother's mind. She Doesn't know that LBY will protect her from what happens in LBY's house. She doesn't know LBY is HWY. She knows that: LBY stepmother is dear friends with the Countess Ruyang, who is Princess Ruyang's grandmother.
I really have seen so many of her movies and I have to say that this is her best one yet.....she had a good chemistry with so many male leads but I don't know what it is that makes their chemistry unbelievably marvelous...even when they are at odds they have it all just by looking at each other...thank you for making this master piece

Zhao Lusi and Yang Yang were great together. Drama - Who rules the world was well done. Strong male and female lead. The action scenes were top notch. Romance scenes were gentle and sweet but funny.

You can't refuse a marriage bestowed by the emperor. With his most beloved godson. While a guest in his home. And insist insist insist. She was practically begging for execution by that point, come on. It's not like they live in a time where you can base a refusal on feelings, and Ling Buyi may have enemies, but he's a formidable fighter, protector of the country, and the most sought-after bachelor ever. With all the criticism she always has for her daughter, this is the craziest thing anyone in their family ever did. And, I mean, if they could abandon Niao Niao when she was a baby, for the bigger picture, they sure af can let her marry golden boy there.

But that doesn't mean that Mrs Cheng is justified in acting disrespectfully in front of the Emperor, or cutting everyone off. Zisheng asking for Shaoshang in marriage is just one of many controlling things he does, but he's moving through etiquette here and doing nothing like any of his dark-streak deeds (say, torturing prisoners for personal interest, conspiring to have the Crown Prince dethroned because his personal judgment suggests so, or performing a massacre for vengeance when legal methods fail him, all things Mrs Cheng ignores). Here he's honestly proposing to a young lady in full daylight, asking the Emperor "to act as a representative of his elders". That's perfectly normal.
I'd even go so far as to observe that he also just recently came back from a major war mission where he sedated an attempted riot by an evil character, so he made the sort of military accomplishment that throughout history around the world might be rewarded with some personal grant by the sovereign. He's a coveted bachelor, and a respected nobleman. There is nothing that can possibly justify prejudice against marrying him.
On her part, Mrs Cheng is a pain in the ass wherever it's about Shaoshang's discipline, and she's full of rules, which she openly breaks whenever she wants. She's not a fair guardian. Perhaps she really thinks that Shaoshang's problem is being inadequate against sharks and tigers, or maybe she's just too obsessed with her own discipline and control. But here she's off the rails. You don't disrespect your superiors in traditional China, you don't refuse the Emperor anything, and when someone who's higher rank than you speaks, you shut up. The inconsistency of her behavior throughout is what makes Niao Niao think that 1) her mother is just prejudiced against her, 2) what her mother tells her can't be taken so seriously, and 3) whether her mother is right or not about her, Shaoshang may as well fend for herself in this world.
So, her mother mined her own authority with Shaoshang by abusing it. She's much more concerned with steering her daughter than understanding her. She doesn't really know what Shaoshang is capable of. And she's way off here, too, because LBY is a dangerous and dark man, but nothing she's doing here helps any, it's actually harmful to her daughter, and, honestly, the two kids are quite a match for each other. Shaoshang is no white lily, if you recall the kind of guts and almost bloodthirst she showed **when she saved herself, her aunt and most of their entourage from a band of assassins in the wilderness and then personally treated bloody wounds** at age 15.
Plus, if you nitpick there's not one family that's fine and dandy. A'Yao was the most innocent and harmless fiancé ever, and she was absolutely against him. And kept bringing LBY up as a better candidate. Now she does this? Her credibility is really null.
And when they get home she gets mad at Niao Niao? There was no way the Chengs could escape the day unscathed if Shaoshang hadn't accepted the proposal. Maybe there was a part of her that was genuinely touched by LBY's declaration, but the fact stands that she accepted him for her family's sake. Mrs Cheng was going to accomplish nothing but to bring some heavy punishment on her whole family. And I bet you she would have also blamed her daughter for it. So, sorry, but no "mother's heart for child's sake" excuse will work on me on this point. Even if she believes that, she's deceiving herself there.

My own experience, I had to seek shelter with neighbours when my own mother took out the cane just because I played with neighbours for hours and she had no idea of my whereabouts. Today I remind her of her then actions, she said that it was the then accepted severity of rule. It would be child abuse today but then the definition of child abuse comes from...... today's stds.
As for LBY and Niao Niao, I will only comment on their character development to the point of this episode. What happened in later episodes of course I now know. LBY was downright terrifying and later repentant and the producers turned Niao Niao into a boring character towards the end, what happened to her jour de vie of the early episodes, her gumption when she told off the 3rd prince that why must she die just because she is a young female and just because her fiance is lying at the bottom of a cliff and could be dead. If she chooses to die, it will be because she is tired of life not because of a man.
I think if Niao Niao and YSJ got together, her character development would be different. That would be a different drama.
When General Ling explained/started talking about why he do love Niao Niao , at that moment I understand why this drama is called "love like the galaxy" 😌🤌

shaoshang's decision, though painful, is very strategic. And i am glad the writers have written a smarter female lead who makes choices based on her resources and situation.
after watching this show and coming back to the moment where Shaoshang's mother humiliated her so severely, I know it looks terrible at face value but Yuanyi wasn't completely wrong. Shaoshang really was naïve and had a short world view of "kind people are good" and "bullies are bad". She didn't think much about human psychological complexity yet because she had never experienced that. her mother was right to be terrified for her. however, there was really no need to embarass Shaoshang so badly. it wasn't her fault she didn't know proper etiquette or didn't understand as much. if at this moment, Yuanyi had accepted her fault for leaving Shaoshang behind and not being able to raise her in stead, she would've saved her relationship with her daughter. all she managed to do was push Shaoshang so far away that she would never be forgiven by her in this life, no matter how much of the relationship the two of them manage to rebuild. Shaoshang would always remember her mother humiliating her and blaming her for all her shortcomings, adding to the bullying she constantly faces everywhere she goes.
the bit where Zisheng says "Madam Cheng, please don't cut me off" with that hint of resentment in his eyes speaks volumes. it's not just out of protectiveness for Shaoshang, but it's also after Shaoshang accepts her mother's words as the truth. he knows the damage those words did were not only to Shaoshang's reputation but also to her self-esteem and confidence. he has seen her accomplish great things without help, seen her fearless in face of certain death, so yes, in this case, he definitely knows and understands her better than her own mother. and it's so satisfying to see him stand up for her. speaking of which, the words her said "In my heart, she is the best woman in the whole capital. She is the best woman in the whole world. I will only marry her in this life" was almost word-to-word from when he overheard Shaoshang and Qiqi talking about Old Madam Wan and her late husband. Shaoshang had mentioned even then that she might never get such words from a hero and she would have to resign to the discontentment of her life by marrying someone ordinary. so Zisheng gave her those words and the promise to show that she indeed deserved it and that she has his heart. it's so beautiful, I'm crying 😭❤️💞✨
As if a fifteen year old know about that sort of thing. You still don't humiliate your own daughter like that in public, right or wrong!! Ling Buyi knows a side of Shaoshang her parents do not and that is good so. It is a connection only he feels and Shaoshang seems to have caught on to that within herself, but because she's been brainwashed how undeserving she is, actually believes it. Besides the Empress took Shoashang under her wing to teach her without judging something her mother failed to do, but had no problem running Shaoshang down at every corner she turned! Where was the mother's "wisdom" when speaking about Shaoshang's naivety/lack of knowledge? The mother was wrong in displaying such crude attitude to everyone's embarrassment, giving fodder to these "nobel" women for mocking Shaoshang even more!
@@vortex162 i agree with you. not only Long Buyi but also the Empress and Shaoshang's father seemed to notice that Shaoshang had accepted her mother's degradation of her as the truth even if those words her repeated stabs to her heart. if her mother had been kinder to her since she came back home, it wouldn't have come to this. when she has never tried to understand who and what Shaoshang really is, she really had some nerve going off about her daughter's flaws like that in front of everyone.
it's just that i understand why she did it. doesn't make it okay, but there was truth to like 5% of her words. the other 95% was pure evil whether she meant it or not. although her way of trying to "protect" Shaoshang was incredibly misguided. she could have disowned her in that moment and even that would've been less embarrassing.
I always hated the “love at first sight” trope. It’s so fickle. But I love how this portrays it not as “love at first sight” but “love at first understanding.” He understands her in a moment in the first episode even though he doesn’t see her and each thing he sees just deepens that understanding. Beautifully done.

I love the Emperor he actually laughs when the princess faints. Wow this was off the charts I cried when CSS said her life was a joke. Wow they almost lost their heads just to belittle this girl. The General gets bonus points for not killing both parents on the spot, oh he was angry. At least now he knows she isn't indifferent to him and she isn't blind. I gotta give her credit for keeping her cool and rescuing her parents even if they didn't deserve it.
Her parents were willing to sacrifice themselves because they thought she didn’t want to be married to him, look at the moms face as she looked on Niao Niaos stunned face, when LBY announced the proposal, she hesitated because she was looking at how NN reacted and when she saw that she seemed reluctant, that’s when she objected. Also mom knows that LBY has a very messed up home life and is dangerous to marry. Because of his high rank, the parents can’t protect her once they are married. she’s afraid that her daughter’s stubbornness and lack of conventional manners might endanger her life, in that family. Remember LBY’s stepmother is related to royalty and they wanted to marry one of the princesses to him to join the families, these people will scheme to kill NN. The mom knows that the only way to keep her away from this is to devalue her as justification. Even the third prince realized that she did this to evade the marriage.

Her daughter is on her own, and others can do and say whatever they want about her, and absolutely no one in her own family will come to her defense. This child is definitely worthy of admiration. And this is done with good intentions. She has the courage to take everything upon herself and give everyone (except her) the opportunity to get out of this situation without much loss. After all, everyone present perfectly understood this. She even gives Ling Buyi the opportunity to withdraw her offer, not realizing that her act only causes more admiration. If the emperor had any doubts, then I think now he understands why his pet chose this girl.
I «marvel» at her parents, especially her mother. They still have the audacity to say that she is not a grateful daughter and compare with Yang Yang. They definitely don't deserve a daughter like her.
The princess is a masterpiece, she is so stupid and arrogant. She exposed herself to ridicule, and someone else is to blame. He frankly avoided her, did not hesitate to declare in front of his family and guests that he would never marry her, but for some reason she decided that this was not true and he would change his mind. She never realized that the girl she despises had more dignity and courage than she did. That is why Shaoshan deserves to be near Ling Buyi, and not she - an arrogant, spoiled, stupid princess. Her only advantage is her knowledge of etiquette.
I sympathize with Shaoshan because she will have to deal with this tangle of hissing snakes ready to bite from around the corner. Arrogance will cover their eyes, they do not want to see that the general has chosen a match for himself.

She has been so spoiled that she does not understand that education does not mean the number of books read, knowledge of rituals and beautiful calligraphy, and respect does not follow the status of birth. CSS read much less than she did, but she comprehended it, passed through herself and her experience (this is what the imperial couple appreciated when they talked with her). CSS is a commoner compared to her, but she has self-respect and courage. The lack of education in CSS can be corrected in a few months, impulsiveness and stubbornness will disappear fairly quickly as experience and sensitive guidance are gained. The princess only has a chance to grow up if she has an experience like Yao's bride. The general is right, Shaoshan is the only one worthy of being by his side.

I felt so sorry for Niao Niao when her mother degraded her in front of the Royal family. Although I understand why she did that, it was still mean. I loved the General's words about her fierce and decisive and wears her heart on her sleeve. He describes her well. I cried at the end of this episode when Niao Niao told her parents where she stands the pain she was feeling so sad 😢😭
What bothers me the most is that her own mother cut her down so badly that if the emperor did agree to take back the proposal, everyone in & out the kingdom would ridicule Niao Niao. No other family would offer marriage to a girl her own mother detested. Her mother went too far & would cause eve more damage to her child not just emotionally but in all of their social networks surrounding her daughter. She doesn’t understand or want to understand her daughter. She’s more upset that she can’t control her. Very heartbreaking to witness. It showed on everyone’s face who liked this very sweet, smart & personable girl.

NiaoNiao is a much better daughter than her mother deserves, under the circumstances. I would expect a better 'argument' from some one who is as educated, with a military mind, as the mother is, and then she has no gratitude that NiaoNiao agreed to marry, in order to save her parent's lives. Still she can only find fault in whatever her daughter does. Ling Buyi has seen intelligence, honesty, courage, loyalty, compassion, and tenderness, and of course beauty
I've lost count how many times I've seen this series now, I notice something different every time. Mother stares hard when she wants to yell at NiaoNiao but when she knows what NiaoNiao is saying is right, there's no eye contact at all. She looks guilty and ashamed but never gives NiaoNiao any credit for being right or apologizes

@@Bumbum23 First of all, she's not 13 in the drama she's 15. I don't care about what the book says we are discussing the drama not the book. Second of all, people back mature much faster than they do now. Do you not know the story of Romeo and Juliet? Juliet was only 13 as well. In Les Miserables for example, Cosette at age 5 had to start working. That's how it was back then. And in fact, in some (particularly third world) countries very young people can understand very deep concepts after living in a lot of hardships, such as portrayed in the movie Capernaum, where a 12 year old boy sued his parents for giving him birth, because he was able to grasp the unfairness of the society he lives in. ShaoShang in the drama is supposed to be a prodigy, so it makes sense that she understands things better and faster than other girls reaching her age.

Nao Nao life is like a Cinderella story. She had to survive and fight her way growing up. Even though she had no parents guiding her, but her attitude and personality are way better than those spoiled princess. She only rude and wild to the one that cause trouble. But very loving and helpful to other. That is why there are three gentlemen that fall head over toes for her. She is pure innocence and straight forward.
At 15 (fifteen!) she is more mature than both of her parents!! Did you hear the sound of heart breaking during the parental refusal speech? That includes mine! 💔 how I wanted to hug her right there!
General Ling surely will do everything to protect her, am so happy the heroine has him by her side.
There are a lot of intense emotions and relationships in all of this episode and it was so thoroughly well done. I thought the palace princesses were unredeeming in their awfulness. Lin Buyi's love and sincerity shone (such a good performance, Leo Wu). Naio Naio is right because it is a bad matter when your own mother will not find something good to say about you. Just a great episode altogether.
Out of all the C-dramas I’ve watched (soo many!) he is my FAVORITE emperor. He actually cares of “normal” people and servants. He respects and care for both of his wives equally and loves he’s children AND he’s just funny
Kudos to this whole team and their talent. From LBY timely rescue, to the sudden proposal(like I'm making sure you're not getting away from me this time) with the emperor, to her parents belittling and humiliation all the way to LBY's opposite description of how he sees her. It was all portrayed so beautifully and the comic release strategically placed at the end with the emperor's reaction to the princess fainting and when CSS accepted the proposal so our hearts don't burst with emotion.

I love Bao Jian Feng as the emperor so, so much, lmao. He was also the emperor in Glory and Splendor I believe, much more serious and resolute by comparison.
