The idea L'isola disabitata comes from Metastasio's friend, singer Farinelli, who wanted to perform it at the court of Madrid. In L’isola disabitata, Metastasio took up the theme of the happy innocence of primitive people, a motif that had spread widely since Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe of 1719.
