Nailed it with the 'over-the-top overlays' comment. I find it very difficult to find a stock overlay that isn't SO MUCH. I'd love a video where you recommend what levels music, games, and your VOICE should be at on the OBS Studio volume mixer! Also if you recommend audio ducking as well, etc. If there's already a video on this, I apologize! Lighting question: do you have tips for us glasses wearers? I take them off for RUclips videos, so no reflecting.. but gaming.... mama needs to see the screen
i cover my lights with a sheet of parchment paper so that the light isn't so harsh - much less glare and far less direct. I still have a bit of glare from the screens, but with the lights, that's a lot more manageable.
In my experience, bring your key light and fill light (if you have/use one) up above you and back away so they are at a 45 degree ish angle, reflections shouldn't show in camera much if any at that point. Definitely a balancing act, but it's doable. Also using a diffused light like a viltrox will help reduce point glare. Fairly cheap, about $60 for a panel and power cord.
Great video! Audio is so important for streams and I wish more people cared about it. The overlay part is very true as well, many new streamers will go overboard with a crazy overlay. And lastly STOP. TEXTING. ON. STREAM.
“Audio is more important than video”. I agree and I’ll raise you one piece of advice and suggest you add a de-esser to your audio-processing. I put that on the same prio-level as noise reduction. Especially for your viewers that are listening using earbuds. You’re welcome.
Wow Sam's backdrop/setup looks 1000x better than the last time I saw him in a video. I love the monitors in the bg and the coloured lights and everything. Looks comparable to Harris's setup now. Nice one, Sam!
Im guilty I want to have music on my stream reason why I got pretzel rocks for the year, just to have a nice vibe when people come in. I recently started streaming and now am a twitch affiliate. I'm still learning obviously Iv learned some much from your channel. Working on getting my audio balance on point. Thanks dude keep the content coming!
YES! still see so many people not realize how important audio is for EEEVERYTHING. Watch a few vids on youtube and learn how to make your productions sound better. It's not THAT hard to improve it by a lot. Audio allows your audience to feel directly connected to you instead of connected to a video they're watching. When watching a movie in a theater, if the audio mix is bad, you'll feel like you're watching something on a screen rather than being immersed in the movie. This is why they built surround sound to further implement immersion and connection.
I’m fairly new to streaming but I think I’ve done a decent job at making my stream look professional. The biggest issue I’ve come across is getting good constructive criticism. All I know is I want to make my stream as good as possible. The most ambiguous part of streaming is knowing whether you’re doing a good job.
I normally do music and just started streaming games yesterday! Ive been watching video after video all day and just dropped a sub because of all the help you’ve given me! Thank you!
Tbh I know I need to work on my sound and lighting but with been new to it all it’s work in progress, but like you said with the tweaking the overlays and lay out and logos I’ve been changing stuff on the weekly. development is key and finding what works for me is great and it’s fun doing that stuff the development is like seeing the progress from going to the gym and noticing you lost 7lb over the past 3weeks the buzz you get off it. But I found the clean look was better for me instead of all the banners and everything else. Like you said I was over compensating for been new. My streams was loud visually to much was going on and stuff. But I’m glad I ended up finding you on here I see that I’m gunna learn a lot from you and get better at what I’m doing. It’s a hobby but I want to enjoy and see where it goes.
YESSSSS i say this all this all the time audio levels , i would suggest most people recording over a test live stream for the inial test but then try test live streams to check how it translates to twitch
I got a gaming pc a couple months ago and it’s crazy to me because 6 months ago I would not have been able to even watch this video and even consider some of these tips. Now I’ve got 10 followers in a week and like 5 constant viewers. Thanks for the tips💙
Hey Harris, I was curious if perhaps you could look into doing a video on how to do a guide on a dual PC setup, like a full one? I know you have done a audio and capture card video for dual pc in mind for when you did it. But if you could do like a full tutorial? Like what wires go where, how do you setup OBS to capture 144hz on your gaming monitor and have your capture card catch it at 1080 at 60 without making your gaming monitor stuck at 60hz? I’ve been sending days on end on RUclips and no one has a settle, and really clear video on how to do it? Something myself setting up a dual pc I have been having big issues with. But thank you always for being the great guy and the wisdom you relay back to us!
Just started streaming again and I see this video popping up! Nice timing man! Love your content, have been really helpful for me as a music producer to livestream my productions and some games too!
I stream phasmophobia and what I've done for viewer engagement is that each form of evidence (X6) I have on the right hand side of the screen as an overlay although greyed out, I duplicated them and applied hotkeys (1-6) on my num pad so when we find evidence ie "Fingerprints" I'll press the corresponding hotkey and it'll highlight that on-screen for the viewers to see, also they can type !Fingerprints in chat and it'll bring up the potential list of ghosts each with their own command ie !Spirit !Phantom etc and if they then want to join in the hunt as a viewer they can type !Spirit and it'll bring up that ghost's evidence list and it's strengths and weaknesses.
I use Equalizer APO and add a limiter VST on my Gamesound -20db and Discord -5 (same for my mic) devices (Created with SAR) and my life has never been better. Never have your or your viewers ears blow out from loud sounds even when you or one of your friends shouts in the mic. This helps so much as gamesound is always lower than your voice if you correctly set up your mic of course. Just look at OBS meters. Gamesound = Green, yourself = Yellow with a touch of Red. That is what you want.
Like the color matching shirt and lights. Also, have you guys thought about making a better version of the spin wheel or slot machine widgets? Those are super interactive, but it’d be nice if there were simpler versions. Maybe you might know of some already out there that might be on a website not many people think to look?
Widgets don't make a stream look more professional, but on twitch they are essential. I think if people took it from that perspective they'd make less design mistakes in this area. Widgets make a screen look more cluttered and spammy. You have to have them though because they encourage engagement. So the key here is to have them and minimize their bad aspects as much as possible.
As a streamer and moderator. I like having a song command in chat instead of showing on stream. I also watch a streamer named Teawrex and his song command triggers it to pop up on stream it's not always there. Adds to the clean look.
Twitch on Xbox actually allows you to plug in webcams like the C920 (that’s what I tested), so if you really want to stream and don’t have a PC, it’s really useful.
What's a bad habit you see a lot of new streamers doing? Be constructive so it can be helpful to someone who might need to see it 👍🏻

"Hello!"
YES!!! OWN IT, THAT WAS CLEAN.
Lighting question: do you have tips for us glasses wearers?
I take them off for RUclips videos, so no reflecting.. but gaming.... mama needs to see the screen
If you have to wear glasses (I'll assume prescription ones) try to get gaming glasses that have your prescription medicine in them.
i cover my lights with a sheet of parchment paper so that the light isn't so harsh - much less glare and far less direct.
Get lasik eye surgery... JK
Diffused light, 45 degrees off to the side, brought up a little high and shining down. Should look more natural as well as reduce glare.
Great video! Audio is so important for streams and I wish more people cared about it. The overlay part is very true as well, many new streamers will go overboard with a crazy overlay. And lastly STOP. TEXTING. ON. STREAM.
Them wave mics are being price gouged like a mother on Amazon right now. Over 300$ at the moment
At that price you might as well pick up an XLR and interface!
Finally, a shorter video from Harris
Am I blind or is the link for the "Now Playing" widget not listed? I think this is a really cool thing to add!
looking for it as well i kinda wanted to see what it would look like on my stream as well, no luck finding it, if you do lmk!
I was looking for it too, I thought it would look pretty sweet on a stream
It's still not there but he has tweeted about it. It's part of Pixel Chat (spelling?).
@@BlockKayde pixelchat.tv thanks for mentioning this, I looked and found it!!!
I'm taking notes. Putting it all together one step at a time and learning as I go.
"Let's jump into it...." That Philly D influence coming through.
Philly D didnt invent it :p
@@misslala1377 I know. I'm just messing around because I know Harris loves Phil.
Thanks Harris. This was driving me nuts with Apex! You are the best and I love your stream.
Who’s remembered “RGB is not for me” when he said “audio is more important that video.”
“Audio is more important than video”.
I agree and I’ll raise you one piece of advice and suggest you add a de-esser to your audio-processing.
I put that on the same prio-level as noise reduction. Especially for your viewers that are listening using earbuds.
You’re welcome.
not finding the widget for the "Now Playing" for Spotify...
It's called PixelChat
Damn man the last 4 videos I have watched of yours. I have taking at least one thing away from each. Great job mate
“TFUE” in the beginning 😂 so toxic
Wow Sam's backdrop/setup looks 1000x better than the last time I saw him in a video. I love the monitors in the bg and the coloured lights and everything. Looks comparable to Harris's setup now. Nice one, Sam!
Im guilty I want to have music on my stream reason why I got pretzel rocks for the year, just to have a nice vibe when people come in. I recently started streaming and now am a twitch affiliate. I'm still learning obviously Iv learned some much from your channel. Working on getting my audio balance on point. Thanks dude keep the content coming!
These are very useful tips man, def going to use them 👍🏼
YES! still see so many people not realize how important audio is for EEEVERYTHING.
You had ambient gold in your thumbnail & that is 100% click bait for me to watch again haha. Love that!
Ambient gold is the BEST song of the StreamBeats playlist
@Gabe Mendoza depends what mod your are in lol no pun intented but they are both awesome
Fantastic video Harris! You’ve opened my eyes to some great products I had no idea existed 👍🏻
i think this looks better 10:10 than the bright lighting, i feel like its more welcoming and cozy
your vids are soooooo helpfull thankyou i have been from 0 twich followers to 7 and 0 subs to 13 just from you here you dropped this 🥇❤️❤️❤️
You are absolutely right about the bar being raised. Each year it gets harder!
Thanks for showing the tips, I don't understand half of it... but still, step by step!
I love the videos with you and sam mixes the content up
I did worked on almost all of them. But the 5th on one came out of no where LOL. Thanks Harris
I got a gaming pc a couple months ago and it’s crazy to me because 6 months ago I would not have been able to even watch this video and even consider some of these tips. Now I’ve got 10 followers in a week and like 5 constant viewers. Thanks for the tips💙
Thank you for taking the time to share very useful tips and tricks!
Thanks for all your help! I'm very new at this and any help is great!
Just started streaming again and I see this video popping up! Nice timing man! Love your content, have been really helpful for me as a music producer to livestream my productions and some games too!
Thanks for the help! Just getting started and also just looked up you’re playlist on spotify for the next stream! 👏🏼👏🏼💯
Thank you Harris. I recently started streaming and already have 487 followers in just one month
How do you not have 1mil subs the content is very impressive and professional. I love your videos!!
OMG I cant agree more with the mic thing and balanced audio!! So important!!!!!!!
those were some very valuable tips!! thank you so much for sharing
BOY O BOY .some technical issues might appear and we admit it does happen but we're doing our best to rectify it
Widgets don't make a stream look more professional, but on twitch they are essential.
Thanks for another great video Harris and Sam! Always helpful. And I like that shirt Harris.
Twitch on Xbox actually allows you to plug in webcams like the C920 (that’s what I tested), so if you really want to stream and don’t have a PC, it’s really useful.
