Why does my protagonist think they will be victorious? What's happening that makes them feel like they are so close to achieving their goal and finding happiness at last?
    DISASTER

I am currently 14 years old, and your videos inspired me to finally put pen to paper and start writing my first novel. Your videos made me search inside myself and figure out why I wanted to write this book. I was able to finish my book outline in the span of a weekend thanks to your videos. I believe I would have just given up, but you showed me that writing doesn't have to be hard. Thank you.❤❤❤

This is my third time watching it. I watched it when it first came out. I came back to look over the story structure. Then this time I’m here to actually take notes and write it all down.... I finally had my own AHA moment when I realized my first draft feels so empty because my protagonist never had an AHA moment. And that she never CHANGED in the story! Now I know how to fix that thank you so so so much!!!!
I honestly don’t know how else to thank you. I’ll be using this to re outline the novel and I’m excited to get to work outlining.

Ditto. I’m a beginner but I have some themes in mind. I would say don’t let not having one put you at a dead stop. Our subconscious has a way of filling in the blanks.
A lot of people enjoy writing so much because it often shows them who they are and what they believe is true and important in their own lives. It’s revelatory. So just write and “listen” to what your pen 🖊️ is trying to tell you.
That being said if you can’t zero in on a theme focus on developing your characters! Answer all the prompts and questions Abbie raises to build your profiles for your protagonist and your antagonist. Their desires, fears and misbeliefs should rule their actions and if it’s true that our actions speak louder than words then what do their actions tell you about where their lives are headed ?
“Cause - and-effect” your way through some scenes and see if you can find a path that could lead to a theme after the midpoint twist. Try skipping to your climax. If you know the end work backwards through the events that logically could / would have led up to it. Can you reverse engineer your theme in that way?
Super general example: there’s a personality type that’s all about control. They are threatened by the prospect of giving it up. They want it over others. Maybe because they think it’s the best way to avoid being hurt.
That mindset would dictate their actions and relationships with other people right? In a romance that would eventually backfire (disaster ) and lead to a dark moment and then the aha would be as simple as you can’t control everything in life. Sometimes you have to relinquish control and have faith in the outcome especially when it comes to relationships with other people. The climax is the control freak being in a situation where they Have to demonstrate they have conquered their control issues and are now ready for the give and take and trust in a healthy relationship.
The theme would have grown from you developing the character’s misbelief. So start with the characters and know them inside and out. Once you know their flaws you’ll figure out what they need to learn. Then figure out how to show them learning how to be better (more complete/ unstuck) than they are at the beginning of their arc.
Another way you might figure a theme out is to go to any number of motivational websites. Or look at books with motivation sayings or famous quotes and see which ones speak to you. Which of them really connects to you. One that connects with me is “when people show you who they are- believe them”.
Then reverse the anecdote and make it a character’s misbelief. :- I should keep giving people chances to change as long as they keep saying they’re sorry. Even if they hurt me. As long as they’re sorry…I should forgive them and give them another chance to change their ways.
Then build your character out from that. Like how would a person act and see the world and relate to people and live their lives if they believed that lie? How would that misbelief define their lives and result in their (bad ) choices?
What kind of person could you portray? Victim of domestic violence might think that way. The fear underneath is “if not him who else will want me? I can’t make it on my own. I’m afraid of being alone”. I’ll stop there but see how a big general idea when reversed can give you a leg up on a character profile and Vice versa?
These are just things that I’ve taken away and thought about for me. You have to flesh everything out and make sure the ideas are big enough to sustain a full blown story.
But I bet if you think back through the 44 years you’ve been on the planet, you have some knowledge you could impart (theme) - something you wish you hadn’t had to learn the hard way - if only someone had given you the heads up 😂😂😂. It doesn’t have to be really complicated and heavy because it’s often those little things that are basic that we forget that cost us the most in the end. Not saying that you are but if you are intimidated by having to have a theme don’t be.
      Good luck to us both!

It’s occurring to me that the three act story structure not only provides a roadmap to good storytelling- it can also be the “proof” of whether your story premise is big enough to support a wip.
If I can’t “meet my burden” to outline / come up with the major plot points in the structure, something is probably not developed enough (most likely the internal conflict) which means it’s going to be a generic story that doesn’t matter.

    Hi Abbie,
I have a story I've been meaning to illustrate, but always felt unsure about the structures. There are sequences to the events but I really loved how you broke it down and show how to keep readers interested. Thank you, I've honestly learned a lot especially the terminologies, which was tricky since I knew what was going on in especially the character interactions but didn't realise they had names like the Hook or Inciting Incidents. They all make so much sense now!

Now I'm going to let my character's misbelief cause her to make a bad decision, triggering a disaster that brings her to her knees. Only then can she accept the responsibility she's been avoiding. I just watched all four videos to take notes and write out exactly what a 3 Act structure is and I feel so accomplished. I am not a plotter, but I like to have a basic idea and some notes taken before I really begin the book. Since I've been having such a hard time with Uprising, I'm going to act like I haven't actually written a billion drafts and know everything because I don't and I'm going to outline it with this structure so I can fix it up and get it ready for an editor. You are an excellent teacher! Not sure if you teach in real life, but you should! I stumbled upon your channel last night and just ABSORBED this 4-part series for outlining a novel. I've gotten to the point where my hand is not only cramped from taking so many notes, but my index finger is actually a little numb from holding my pen for so long LOL. No seriously, I've taken 12 pages of notes between watching the first two videos last night and the other two today. Let's just say I'm no longer afraid of outlining a novel I've been developing for over 10 years now (off/on) - but this helps me focus more on the main character. THANK YOU for making these videos! Abbie Emmons I wish I could show you how I’ve been organizing the story beats. I don’t have them fully planned out yet, but I’m old school and used index cards to plot out each act/beat. I initially had a chapter outline going, then realized it’d be much more functional to outline the scenes then write the chapters as they come. It’s still hard for me to write out of chronological order, which is why this method works so well for me! 💜 Also if I haven’t said it on any other videos yet I can’t wait to read your debut novel!

They're satisfied by the character's growth, but sad because the book's over, but satisfied because there aren't actually any questions, but sad that there aren't any questions since that means it's really the end, but satisfied they aren't left on a cliffhanger, but sad because there probably won't be any more, but overall satisfied.

The fact that you are STILL under 100k is unbelievably upsetting to me, because your videos have literally helped me more than practically every single other channel on this website combined. I frankly believe it to be that you tell the truth about writing, and ask the hard questions, and people would rather believe a quick "top 8 tips for writing your novel" video is more helpful than being told to sit down and actually think about their characters and story. You will be the first person I ever support on Patreon (assuming you have one) because you have been the most instrumental towards writing my story. Thank you!

I've always struggled with making character arcs and character development for a long time, and every youtube channel I've watched regarding character arcs says to just wing it and I really didn't understand what to do, but your channel has helped me so much! I've been able to make a character arc woven within the plot and I understand it perfectly well! Thank you so much!

Ok, new to writing, new to this channel!
I have to say, this girl is for sure- long winded but she says the exact same thing other vloggers say with a little extra something that really hits home for me. I watch some of the other gals, their sarcasm is fun and all, but I just get it when this girl says it, especially when she puts up her points on the screen. Thanks!! I am subscribing.

It hit me around the midpoint of the last video in the series that this is the perfect guideline to life in general. We go through this stuff IRL whenever we grow as people or face obstacles. Pretty sure that means it's gonna work just fine for storytelling lol.
Gonna be food for thought for me for a good while I believe so, thank you for sharing this. You really deserve a lot more viewers than you have.

Hey Abbie, I know this series has been on your channel for a while, but as a newbie I want to say thank you! I ran one of the stories I had started to outline through the questions asked in your templates and it really opened up the protagonist to me. I had to step back and ask what were they struggling with internally? Before this exercise they had blindly moved forward into the plot because I wrote it, now they have more to think about and a lot more at stake!

You're the first person I've heard explaining the 3 act structure (or any plot structure) in a way that's made me not-hate it; probably because I feel like story structures are always presented as a sequence of events (this has to happen, then that has to happen) but you've emphasized the importance of tying these story beats to why they matter :P
Or at least the examples people give are always super generic and never tie to the protagonist's internal conflict in any obvious way; e.g. the example inciting incident is always a call to a generic adventure or something bad that happens that would be bad for anyone, and it just turns me off from using story structures because I don't want to write that kind of story and it's not at all obvious to me how to use them to write different stories :'D

I love happy endings. 9 times out 10 I want to write happy endings and that 10th time is a setup for a sequel where the characters have a chance to either undo the downer ending or achieve an even better ending that wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for the initial downer ending.

Also a little idea: since I love how you explained writing a main character, it'd be awesome if you can talk about how to write side characters that builds the story and main character's arc. How to make them also three-dimensional, believable, and how to write their relationship with the main characters. Thank you, Abbie!

Why does my protagonist think they will be victorious?
What's happening that makes them feel so close to achieving happiness?
What does this disaster specifically mean for my protagonist?
How does it force them to realize
that they're to blame for this crisis?
How does it disarm them and make them face off fear + misbelief?
How does this disaster bring my protagonist to the darkest and lowest moment of their life?
How is your protagonist going to overcome their fear to continue to the climax?
What lesson are they going to learn (and teach the audience?)
How does my protagonist prove their transformation (crushing the misbelief + facing fear)
How has my protagonist change as a result of her journey?
