  • Xiaomi SU7 is the first car in the world made by a phone company. It's so competent that I think it doesn't need to imitate Porsche. It's a Xiaomi Car. Why is that not enough?

I only believe that when I see a major European car channel claiming that - I can NOT imagine it matches Porsche in handling at all frankly… e.g BYD while impressive with data and interior (and decent software) was really lacking in driving dynamics. Xiaomi has amazing industrial design and demonstrated ability to build great UI but the have even less experience in building cars than BYD…
Even companies with decades of experience (Ferrari oder BMW) have not managed to match Porsches Handling
If Xiaomi would be even remotely comparable to Porsche Level Handling all western car manufacturers should be scared as hell! 😅

Imo, it's not a straight up copy of a Porsche, but it was merely inspired by the design and philosophy of Porsche. Having seen lots of imitation of European cars coming out of China, this one is far from those. This feels like there was effort into making this work well in terms of Xiaomi's standard of what a Xiaomi car should be and merely influenced by an already established car manufacturer like Porsche. It's a great first attempt from anyone let alone a phone manufacturer. If this was available globally, no doubt this will disrupt the mid to high-end EV market. Great video btw.

What Apple couldn't achieve, Xiaomi accomplished! The issue with Apple's approach to building an electric car, I believe, lies in their perfectionism. They aimed for unparalleled innovation and self-developed technologies, setting the bar extremely high. In contrast, Xiaomi took a more pragmatic route, incorporating familiar technology like integrating an iPad into their car's system. This highlights a distinct management philosophy and an openness to blending existing tech with new innovations.
My experience with Xiaomi's products, including their smartphones, has been positive. While not flawless, I've witnessed a consistent improvement in quality across their range. Moreover, Xiaomi has refined its pricing strategy over the years. Their products defy simple categorization as "cheap"; they boast striking designs, vibrant colors, and precise functionalities, without being burdened by unnecessary features that could delay product launches.

I have bought xiaomi products for my home and I love them, for the most part...
For us, in the western part of the world (EU here), the integration is a bit cumbersome and the cloud servers availability and response time varies, with occasional downtimes, so it's not ideal.
I'm sure that in China it's a different story and their products are much more refined and diverse.
I can say I'm pleasantly surprised by their first car and I don't find the resemblance to Porsche that striking or even bad. Nothing wrong with aspiring to be as good as one of the best out there.
I learned to respect their products and their efforts of going global in such competitive markets and with such diversity of products.
Their products have some things in common though, which people tend to not get when firstly coming into contact with xiaomi: they all have a good design and build quality and they all are very competitive priced + they are pretty well integrated, with the aforementioned downsides in the western markets.
When it comes to the car, it will probably be much more expensive in EU and NA, unless they come into these markets with local production too, to escape import taxes.
We, as customers, can only hope for the competition to grow and the prices to go down. Good job on the review btw.

There is a 10% import tax for selling Chinese cars into the EU. Producing locally and getting all the material sourced here probably costs just as much. BYD and the other manufacturers currently already on the European market are demanding the same prices as European manufacturers to not establish the image of a second tier option. But the cars just aren't on the same level yet. So they either have to lower prices, or they will keep their sold cars here significantly below the 1% level.

If we consider the concept that elephants, if capable of drawing, would depict their gods resembling elephants, it follows logically that design is often influenced by familiar shapes and forms. Similarly, in the realm of aerodynamic sedan design, there are limited options for achieving optimal functionality. Consequently, it's inevitable that modern cars, particularly electric ones within this category, will converge towards a similar design. This convergence is not indicative of mere imitation but rather reflects the rational pursuit of efficiency and aerodynamics, establishing it as a convergence design rather than a mere copycat phenomenon.

Everything works top notch for after 2 years and they are so much cheaper than other ecosystems like alexa or apple or whatever. @@makoado6010 i’m telling my first hand experience, and when you buy something that is cheaper by a wide margin than competitor products, you also should expect maybe it’s less reliable. if it turns out great then you get a great bargain, and for me i gret a lot of such great bargains. you can stick to apple products if you only aim to buy premium products that you don’t expect it to fail, but for me i never will buy a usd600 headphones or usd50 phone case, there are great cost effective choices 1/10th of the price for me

Xiaomi enters a chinese market with 100s of other EV companies
BYD and TSLA is still reducing prices…
Many nice care available… Xiaomi is nice too
But the big whales will squish smaller EV players…. they’ve already made Toyota, Mercedes, etc - throw in the towel in making EVs

@@HTx78 Its basically the race to who will produce a safe and nice looking family car with a good range for cheap. The first to do this will sell a lot of cars, but the trick is to wait a year or two, because car brands are always hopping on a band wagon when it comes to making money and competing with each other for the market and soon after the "revolutionary" model, you will have even better deals from other brands. If Tesla does this (highly unlikely), they will have a significant advantage, because of the brand name and charger grid. 150 hp and 100 mph is more than enough and i believe they can put a cheap (small) battery in such car to reduce the production cost and still have a good range.

Yeah impressive, the guy on the wheelsboy channel did say something interesting in his review of the polestar 4 though - he said the polestar 4 is about half the price in the Chinese market Vs western markets (he used the UK as an example), the reason being there are so many EV manufacturers in the Chinese market that competition is fierce and they have to set prices low to compete.

I understand the slight disappointment at the design being a bit..... standard (to use other word than 'unoriginal') but I also understand Xiaomi trying to play it safe on their first attempt. Considering they got everything else so right (which even I, a Xiaomi user, did not expect on their first try at a car), I think we should cut them some slack on the design.
