When you think about it. Duty is the polar opposite of Monolith and yet the exact same. They fight for a purpose they believe in, and they are sworn to it.
I kinda feel sad to Monolith... that Radioactive Pillar isn't going to save them but.. they got their ends already. While Duty is doing their jobs where no one's going to do it but their own selves who are willing to sacrifice time and life. They just do it out of their worries against the Zone's negative effects on its surroundings and fighting every oppressive mutants they see. Freedom however are a bit crazy, but not as crazy, sadistic and psychopathic as Mercs.
Duty is morally good, they choose freely to fight the zone. They could be back home living comfortable and blissful lives. But they don’t, because the zone is ultimately the greatest threat.
Duty is my faction of choice. Even if I play as a loner/ecologist/military, duty is the faction i'll get my standing with first. They are the most reasonable and level-headed and fair. They don't attack others senselessly, they protect the smaller and weaker factions and take pride in it. Most importantly, I hate the zone... Well.. The C-Con and those responsible for it's creation. Duty has taken upon themselves to control it and make sure it does not impact or harm people, especially those outside of the zone. It's a very noble cause. Military are literal pussies, too afraid to venture in again. Duty are ex-military that saw and experienced the zone and it's horrors and took it on a personal level. Against all odds determined to complete their original military mission (to destroy it) as it was made up of surviving members from the second disaster that were tasked to destroy it, so they will - come hell or high water, while the actual military are just sitting around the zone, too afraid to go back in until all anomalies have been mapped out and save paths guaranteed (which will never happen since it forever changes) you just have to take your losses and push in, just like Duty is doing! My utmost respect for them.
@@916n8 They are partly responsible for the creation of the zone as well as the largest emission that killed so many, including themselves. Not to mention their leader Lebedev was the lead scientist in X8 which was the main lab that worked on the brain scorcher and inhumane experiments creating a lot of the human mutants... Then he actually joined his fellow bastard colleagues in the C-Consciousness pool. There's absolutely nothing to like about them. They are one of the main bad guys in retrospect. If it wasn't for them - the zone, including a lot of the atrocities going on in it would either not exist or would exist in a lot more stable state.... My first priority is to either wipe them out (if I play with a enemy faction of theirs) or do enough of damage to faction relations so they declare war and then I wipe them out. They only exist as a faction because they broke off from the other scientists due to some squabbles, but their guilt in all the atrocities that lead to the creation of the zone and everything bad in it is just the same. They can try to redeem themselves all they want but in my eyes even bandits and renegades have more redeeming qualities.
@@916n8 I proudly represent myself as Clear Sky member. They are somewhat similar to Ecologists, although I think they're more focused on Emissions and how to stop them, rather than Artefacts and other wonders of the Zone.
out of all factions dialogue it seems duty had remained the most human out of all of them, taking on an unshakable stoic martyrdom to destroy the zone.
Out of all factions, they seem to be the ones that are still the most humane after continuing to live in the zone. Interesting. And thank you for those translations.
@@killingfields6599 You're right. I think they may be very similar to mercenaries with that. But their "mission" in the zone is different. Mercenaries are lead into it by a new possibility of earning money, duty are here to don't let the zone expand.
This makes me love them twice as much. Tireless Crusaders in black armor, exhausting every last grain of their soul for a cause greater than themselves, no matter the fact that nobody will ever celebrate these heroes.
Duty are true heroes. They go into the zone without a single thought for themselves, they know they will never be known on the outside but they still fight to eradicate the zone to keep the world safe.
I appreciate their intentions and dedication, but their methods seem like an exercise in futility. To borrow a quote from someone else, if the Zone could be destroyed by shooting at it, it would've vanished long ago. While the C-Consciousness was still active, Duty's actions only seemed to provoke it, like poking a hornet's nest. Now that the C-Con is gone and the Zone is wild and uncontrolled, who knows if Duty's provocations will make things better or worse.
They’re so hard on themselves. They’re very dedicated. I really appreciate these videos. I always wanted to know what the inhabitants of the Zone were talking about. I always felt like an outsider when standing at a camp fire, unable to understand what the others were talking about.
Moraly speaking, with Clear Sky gone theyare the only ones who try to fight of the Zone. Yes it's npt going too well but everything they do is what I would expect from a bounch of people who saw the horrors of the Zone and thought "This cannot be allowed to exist"
They didn't really fight the Zone tho, rather, they knew it couldn't be destroyed since their leaders are ex-c-consciousness. They gave their all to stop Strelok from advancing into the Zone since they knew that would provoke the Zone. They are never portrayed fighting the Zone itself Also, despite most of the CS being mercenaries, they somehow had unshakable trust in their leader and followed every order no matter what, as if there's some controlling going around
First i want to say thank you for doing all these translations. A lot of STALKER players have spent many many hours myself included playing the game without knowing what anyones discussing. These really add a lot of atmosphere and lore. Youre the first person to do this, and its very appreciated. Secondly, the common theme i notice with basically every faction is that theyre all starving for decent food. It seems that food would be a huge moneymaker in the zone if you could ship it in since everyones living on bread, sausage and canned meat. I imagine that the factions whether duty, bandit, loner, or everyone in between would pay good money or even kill for good stuff like sweet canned peaches, candy bars, and good quality MREs
Constant lack of good (or even remotely decent) food is one of the reasons why “bars” are so profitable in the Zone. After days or weeks of living off hardtack, crappy sausage and canned meat stalkers are ready to pay hard cash for a portion of fried potatoes, pickles and tomatoes with some questionable (but freshly cooked) meat. Problem is that Zone does not grow anything remotely edible and no farms exist inside for obvious reasons, while food traffic from outside is blocked or fleeced heavily by military. However some stalkers developed a taste for mutant meat, eating bizarre “delicacies” like bloodsucker tentacles, flesh’s eyes (or whole Flesh) or mutated boar. Of course eating any mutant meat is risky since it carries unstable DNA strains, possibly unknown viruses or mutated parasites and of course radiation.
@@MrVlad12340 Not to mention that you gotta cook and purify the mutant meat instead of eating it raw. I imagine eating raw mutant meat would cause Clostridium, Listeria, and Campylobacter and also imagine the amount of radiation you would be consuming...
As an English speaker, I've really missed a lot with these campfire stories. In spite of everything, the only thing that holds Duty together is 'if not me, then who?'

Shit, I'm a diehard for Freedom, and I've had playthroughs where I'd go and wipe out the Bar of every single Dutyer I could find. But now, I'm not so sure. I feel like a greater monster than anything the Zone could ever create. These were men, with the same needs and wants as anyone else, shaken to their very core by the horrors of the Zone. Now, I'm not so sure about where my ideas have led me.
I mean, Duty would literally go hell and high water to defend against the Zone. I'd argue that their points to destroy all of the Zone can be quite tempered with goodwill, as seen with their defense for the Ecologists.. and even the Loners. If their flaw is that they will not allow anyone to use the Zone for gain... then why do they establish a base in the center of the Zone where Loners are allowed to roam and have a safe place to sleep before heading to the more dangerous parts of the Zone? If Freedom wasn't the one who was defending the Barrier, they'd protect that area aswell. I'd wager they'd practically even eat their own guts and ask for more. Duty is fucking relentless. With the Zone even increasing now, because of the deaths of C-Consciousness... we need more people like the Duty.
don't remember if it was an official NPC who told me this, but he said 'the Duty members are all great guys, but put enough of them together and they become raging zealots'. this dialogue cements that. they sound like average joes who had enough of the Zone and decided to do what others could not, or would not do.
This one is really making me look forward to the Clear Sky campfire conversations. I feel like if they hadn't been wiped out that there would have been more than a few joint operations between Clear Sky and Duty.
I have played this series from the first game and have enjoyed most of them. I really enjoy the setting and gameplay, but never bothered to look up what the actual spoken lines were. So I was basing that opinion of solely the text boxes and translated spoken bits, projecting my own opinion of factions personalities without understanding the untranslated stuff fleshing them out. So Duty goes from being just another bland ‘generic mil dudes’ group into a bunch of world-weary special operations types exhausted from having to spend years fighting nigh unending hordes of horrific mutants breaking free, random thugs, morons messing with reality warping artifacts, and the world itself. All this with next to no supplies in a world where no one seems concerned about this active tumor on reality slowly spreading. I actually like the series more now than before, a nice surprise for today.
Love the line where the duty soldier gives freedom credit for warfare. My first impression of them was negative in SOC since they block you from entering the bar unless you have something they want. They also mocked me for not killing enough mutants when they attacked the encampment out side. Maybe I would of been more receptive if I understood the small talk they had. They are clearly exhausted from a mission that may very well be impossible to accomplish.

Prefer not to pick sides, but I feel closer to Duty. I enjoy helping the people of the zone. Duty, freedom, mercenary, bandit. Doesn't matter. They're all the same. Bunch of people suffering. You can't just stand there and watch.
Humanity's last defense, whether you like to agree or not they'll still try to destroy the zone to keep people from getting hurt by it even if the military decides to run away from it.
Duty can be extreme but atleast at the core they want to do good, them actively hunting mutants and create safe zone like the Bar has helped alot of stalkers.
Man after seeing the zombie video it's not surprising how they are so jaded and depressed but bound by duty in a hope that they accomplish their mission.
This is how Stalker got factions right. In games like Skyrim, the only major two factions are either imperialist empires played like a puppet by elves or nord supremacists who want to kick out all non-nords. In Stalker, every faction actually makes sense. Freedom, who’ve seen the beauty of the Zone and want to live in harmony with it. Duty, who’ve seen the horrors of the zone, and want to destroy it to protect humanity. Ecologists, who want to understand the Zone to better mankind. Military, who try to contain the Zone and cordon it off to prevent people from getting hurt. Mercs, who want to make a quick buck. There are a couple others, but you get my point. The player is able to choose from a cornucopia of complex moral dilemmas and doesn’t railroad the player into ends that they don’t agree with. More than that, the game doesn’t shame you for choosing any of them.
Oddly, this gives me a much greater appreciation for Duty. I have only played Anomaly upto the point of driving out Sin as a Loner. I thought Duty was too square like Military but i might have to dig into them deeper.
absolute chads, instead of leaving the zone aftrr getting their asses kicked they made their own faction and stayied to fight for the safety of everyone
Fantastic work. Do you have plans to do translations from original Shadow of Chernobyl? I love these translations of the Call of Pripyat dialogue, but I'm curious what characters talked about in SoC. There are loners and bandits that sit around campfires telling stories and jokes to each other, I've always wondered what they are saying.
I can definitely respect duty for what they believe in, but I'm Clear Sky at heart, plus, I highly doubt that even with all their high end gear and noble cause, they can hold back The Zone, mutants, and C-Con forever, and the Zone doesn't seem like something that can be destroyed
The Khan music in that spooky level did fit well DUTY soldiers background. A tired person pushed to it's limits in a cold and cruel zone where you're used to kill inhumane things that go away from your understanding
Loner and Bandits are the working poor, looking for things that will improves their economic situations. Duty forces themselves to not stops out of fears toward what will happen if they stops, they are scares in the unknown possibility of what would happen if they stops destroying things of the zone.
In fairness, the Dolgovites can (and should) be understood - for the most part they come from the army, police and other security forces who are accustomed to strict control, and the average age of a member of this group is around 30-40 years old (and some Dolgovites are old enough to be fathers to their ideological opponents from the Svoboda group). These are people who are used to responsibility for their loved ones and their homeland, so even the very existence of such an abomination as a Zone (from which it is not clear at all what to expect) forces them to take up arms.
Duty ppl can be assholes, but they are the best faction. They lost brothers and want their revenge to protect others. Freedom is ambiguous with bandits, recruiting either from them or from loners. Pretty sure they buy their drugs from them, showing brotherhood to loners but helping their bullies prosperate.
Everyone starts a neutral stalker, enjoy the stay as freedom enjoyer but at the end, at the end we all rather die protecting our love ones from the zone with our brothers from duty

Freedom is right in that people shouldn't just prod at the zone, and they are right in that we cannot just destroy it. But now Duty is correct in that they must find a way to contain the zone and eventually destroy it, that co-existance is no longer a viable long term solution.
You get more and more jealus of Russian speaking people can understand what these NPCs are speaking. A true STALKER experience. Now I understand that I am a tourist with gun not an actual stalker among this depressing atmosphere.

When you think about it. Duty is the polar opposite of Monolith and yet the exact same. They fight for a purpose they believe in, and they are sworn to it.
At least Duty members have free will, they actually could choose their cause.
@@GeneralTantzu This is also true.
I think it's even more interesting that they have absolute polar opposite color schemes, Duty with Black and Red and Monolith with White and Green
Military is about not letting anyone in that's all.

I am dutyer also
@@916n8 Got wrecked in the same game they were introduced in pretty sure.
They're also implied to be paid by Russia to stop Clear Sky and Ukraine from changing the zone, but they don't know.
Out of all factions, they seem to be the ones that are still the most humane after continuing to live in the zone.
Interesting.
And thank you for those translations.
Ofcourse because they are one of the powerful factions and got to live comfortably in the zone

They go into the zone without a single thought for themselves, they know they will never be known on the outside but they still fight to eradicate the zone to keep the world safe.
they are doomed soldiers that didnt give up after the failure of their mission
entered as military or ex stalker military and stayed as duty
They are never portrayed fighting the Zone itself
Also, despite most of the CS being mercenaries, they somehow had unshakable trust in their leader and followed every order no matter what, as if there's some controlling going around
I love these translations videos, it's worth understand what they say to comprehend their way of thinking. Looking forward to seeing translations for Svaboda !

Good thing this evaluation happened through video games
don't remember if it was an official NPC who told me this, but he said 'the Duty members are all great guys, but put enough of them together and they become raging zealots'.
this dialogue cements that. they sound like average joes who had enough of the Zone and decided to do what others could not, or would not do.
mob mentality, all it takes is one in a group to move them to violence
Every faction in the zone: *Hehe Cheeki Breeky*
Duty: _Why are we still here..._
Military's the latter, though.
The best so far. Were all others succumb to the Zone's influence (with good cause no doubt) Duty keep their courage.
This one is really making me look forward to the Clear Sky campfire conversations.
I feel like if they hadn't been wiped out that there would have been more than a few joint operations between Clear Sky and Duty.
Not really, clear sky don't have a very good opinion on duty due to their struggle for power in the żonę. Source: there is a campfire phrase about it
I have played this series from the first game and have enjoyed most of them.
I don't think you have any idea how ready I am for Clear Sky's campfire chatter.

The things those experienced stalkers say and talk about... I wonder why they haven't got PTSD yet.
they probably have it tbh
Many of them have it already, even the military guys at the borders of the Zone. I'm sure i heard in SoC military recruit uniform talking about the body of his friend that was mangled by some creature .

Humanity's last defense, whether you like to agree or not they'll still try to destroy the zone to keep people from getting hurt by it even if the military decides to run away from it.

Man after seeing the zombie video it's not surprising how they are so jaded and depressed but bound by duty in a hope that they accomplish their mission.
The reason why i love stalker is because every faction actually are really amazing
Wow thanks, you just make me to love Duty even more

Fantastic work. Do you have plans to do translations from original Shadow of Chernobyl? I love these translations of the Call of Pripyat dialogue, but I'm curious what characters talked about in SoC. There are loners and bandits that sit around campfires telling stories and jokes to each other, I've always wondered what they are saying.
Duty= A good way die, serving humanity
I can definitely respect duty for what they believe in, but I'm Clear Sky at heart, plus, I highly doubt that even with all their high end gear and noble cause, they can hold back The Zone, mutants, and C-Con forever, and the Zone doesn't seem like something that can be destroyed
The Khan music in that spooky level did fit well DUTY soldiers background. A tired person pushed to it's limits in a cold and cruel zone where you're used to kill inhumane things that go away from your understanding
Loner and Bandits are the working poor, looking for things that will improves their economic situations.

Duty is Based
Duty ppl can be assholes, but they are the best faction. They lost brothers and want their revenge to protect others.
Freedom is ambiguous with bandits, recruiting either from them or from loners. Pretty sure they buy their drugs from them, showing brotherhood to loners but helping their bullies prosperate.
