I think in the original script Jack (Harry Styles character) was supposed to be way more angry, manipulative, and abusive. Not the toned down version in the film. There was also more signs about Alice having a different life. Like whenever she would wash her hands, she would wash them really throughly like a surgeon and stuff like that.

that's probably why Olivia was dicksucking so hard about Shia being in the film. I wonder if they had cast accordingly (Not shia but someone who could play that type of character well) how it could have gone.

    • @ivanhenderson31
      @ivanhenderson31 8 месяцев назад +60

No…dying, flight responses, or shocking events in sleep can easily wake people up…the random visions presented throughout the film are mangled together and don’t work well with the random events that take place in the dream world. It’s poor build up and then the execution dies multiple times when it should have taken place no more than 70% of the way into the film.

You gotta realize this wasn’t her choice, she was forced into this and chained down to the bed and she couldn’t move and we can probably assume she was drugged with something to stay in the simulation. There’s also something called sleep paralysis where if you have a bad dream or something you can “wake up” and you’ll just be stuck unable to move, this could also be a possible explanation. Sure the sequences are randomly thrown in with no explanation but that’s the point of it, you aren’t supposed to get an explanation and it’s like you’re living through her life.

So, I actually read the orignal script by the Van Dyke brothers while I was a Development Intern at a film production company, way before the second rewrite or any stars' attachment. It was messy even then, but it had closure. In the original script, we learn that 'Alice' (name changed from Evelyn) is in the simulation about 3/4's through the script. There were multiple portals around the town that the men could enter back to the real world through. She escapes through one of them, waking in the simulation machine in 2050. She climbs out, walks around the apartment where she discovers that her ex husband 'Jack' (originally Clifford) had kidnapped her and forced her into the machine/simulation. She was actually a famous surgeon, but he faked her death. Clifford then returns home, they fight, she kills him and escapes. The end, lol.
It seems the original script was a much more overt critiscim of the horrors of misogyny. Clifford was basically an incel and the simulation was for men who felt emasculated by the women around them being more succesful than them. So, their fantasy was to return to the time where women were 'put in their place as housewives'. Also there was no Chris Pine character or Olivia Wilde's character lol. They went to such lengths in the final film to 'keep you guessing' that no one knew what the fuck was going on by the end lmao

i just don't understand why EVERY director for thriller/horror movies make their characters so incompetent in order to build suspense. there is no reason for alice to be standing around so long after bunny explicitly tells her they are going to kill her. alice's LIFE has been threatened and yet no fight or flight response kicks in until it is nearly too late. the whole car chase would still be just as suspensful if alice runs away immediately like a rational person would do in that situation. there is no logical reason for alice to be standing around, especially after knowing what she is capable of since she just murdered her husband without a second thought.

I havent seen the movie, just this review but even i know that there are 3 biological responses..not 2.
      Fight
      Flight
      Freeze
Its actually very common for people to freeze. It has its uses, but oftentime freezing happens when it shouldnt and works against survival.
It is not rational when ur on the outside looking in, its actually frustrating, but for the person experiencing it...its disorienting and takes some time to figure out how to even move.
Commonly happens during shootings (in real life). U see people running mostly, but a lot of others freeze in place confused, trying to understand whats happening.

I actually loved it and am now watching critics tear it apart while all I can think of is that they aren't saying anything in particular which would justify them not liking this movie. I think movie critics watch too many films to be able to enjoy it completely. As you say, this movie does not have the same flow as others do but that's why it makes you keep watching. Sure, many things could have been done differently which would have improved it, but those are all just details and it essentially turned out good in the end anyway.
(I also think Harry Styles did a good job at acting 🤷‍♀ Anyone who says he underperformed need to realise that 1: he played alongside known and respected actors/actresses so it was a given that he would be outshone and 2: sure this isn't his first rodeo but he doesn't have years of experience either.)

I feel like the movie would’ve been great if shortened to one hour, and if they went with the ending the original script had instead of what they went with, I would’ve enjoyed it so much more. Towards the end of the original it felt like they rushed it and they ran outta room. But
In the original script, Alice discovers the truth when she finds a portal to the real world inside a house for sale. She wakes up hooked to an IV and to a machine that puts people into the simulation. Alice unplugs herself, sees she’s in her apartment and in the year 2050. Upon looking around, Alice discovers that Harry Styles' Jack, due to their impending divorce, signed them up for Alt-Life, the equivalent of the Victory Project. Jack had faked her death and forced her into the simulation. Alice re-enters the simulation so as not to raise suspicion, but Jack figures her out and sends her for shock therapy, but it doesn’t work. Alice tricks Jack and then one night forces him to tell her the truth about everything. Eventually, Jack admits that he put them in the simulation because he wanted them to be happy again and that he was angry she had put work before him. Jack tells Alice the location of the exit portal in their house and Alice leaves. However, Jack follows Alice to the present day, and they get into a physical fight resulting in Alice stabbing him with a knife. In the simulation, Bunny finds Jack dead and Alice unconscious. Alice wakes up back in the 1950s in a psychiatric ward, is told she killed Jack and had dreamed the future where she was free. The final scene of the film is Bunny visiting Alice in the psychiatric ward. Bunny reveals to Alice there is an escape portal behind them and leaves. Alice begins to head towards the door and the film ends.

I actually like how this movie was delivered…? The constant repetition helped show how Alice was living in a constant loop, and she would often get freaked out over things but wouldn’t question it because that was just how everything had always been. I also think Harry did a good job with Jack as a character because I think his calm demeanor about the whole situation helps show how he was crazy enough to know what was going on but was happy with the decision he made of making them both live there, even against Alice’s will. If he was too psychotic it would have created a type of chaos that could have lead to the discovery of the simulation because as it was stated in the movie, chaos is what breaks the system. One of my favorite things about this movie though is the soundtrack. There was this one audio that was consistently being played throughout the movie that really made me uncomfortable, which is what this movie was trying to convey. Seeing as it is a psychological thriller, it was supposed to leave you with questions, remaining a mystery even in the end. idk though I just loved the cinematography of this movie and the soundtrack.

Even these 35 minutes were such a pain to watch, thanks to Dylan's commentary I was able to get through it. This might be the WORST movie to ever exist
