I like to keep electrical components dry, just cover it by wrapping with celophane or plastic bag then clean the nasty grease with degreaser and brush, rinse and let dry! Note: George does an excellent job explaining everything in detail, great video! thanks
George, best video out there for this repair. I’ve watched them all, maybe. One put me to sleep. Another omitted critical stuff. You covered it all and didn’t rush. I’m happy that you focused the lens well on all pertinent parts. Good job. Thanks again.
Today my new tensioner and belt arrived from FCPEuro. Easy to install...but when I tried to rotate the tensioner clockwise a bit to remove the retaining pin, the tensioner housing snapped. The metal had a casting defect. So I’ll get a new one free, but it’s a bit of an annoying delay. This by far is the best video I’ve found for this procedure.
Fantastic video thank you so much! I followed it step by step the whole way and I’ve just finished the job. Turned the car on and all is working great!
Excellent video about this careful maintaince job - personally I will only INA tensioner and idler and continental drive belt. FEBI Is a good brand but INA I believe is the supplier for OEM. Not done this job although have changed the drive belt before. I have had all the parts for a long time though might look at next year as I’ve seen this excellent tutorial. Thanks George - the torque specs were useful too.
Thanks for good video. Just having issues with my N54, & new belt moving slightly from side to side around tensioner. Tried two tensioners now, & both have a noticeable wiggle on one of the two pulleys. I used the INA tensioner & torque required is 40nm for tensioner & deflection pulleys. Something simple turning into a pain.
I'm about to do this preventative maintenance task on my UK 08 N52K 125i auto coupe convertible, 1 off 122 for 08. currently @117000miles. I shall use brake cleaner and a toothbrush for cleaning, I can do my teeth after too!! Thanks for the torque figures too, great video, thanks muchly!
great video again mate! NOTE: i have the later version of the N52 engine on my 130i..the one with the black engine cover! it has a different idler pully system!! its is attached to the alternator itself (so not a separate one just below it like yours) and it requires a special tool to get it removed/replaced!! just thought i should mention this...
Hi Mate, thanks for the video. At 02:45 there's no pin to remove / add when you remove the belt. Then at 09:20, you say a pin needs to be removed. Where did this pin come from? Is it in the kit? When do we put it on?
The pin comes on the new part only and is discarded once removed. It's there to keep the tensioner under tension to allow the belt to be fitted. You remove the pin to release the spring tension onto the fitted belt as per the video.
Hi George do you possibly know the Torque spec for the N53B30A tensioner bolt? Is it also 25NM +90 degrees? The N53 is not spoken about as much as the N52. Would appreciate so much if you could help me!
Yh its so hard to fibe stuff about n53b30. I just check n54 vids and n52. They all very similar. At least n54 is as its basically same engine aa n53 but with turbo
hi, i also have n53b30 engine on my lci 330i, i`m looking to replace the belt and pulleys but i don't know which belt to get as there are two types showing on realoem, for car with active steering or without, i found some info on how to identify by checking what type of power steering reservoir you have, but i don't have one so does this mean i have electric power steering? or is the reservoir hidden in another place? i`ve been searching on forums and internet and cannot find any info on this and i`m starting to lose my mind, is you n53 the same or do you have hydraulic power steering ?
@@GeorgeAusters yes, but I think I understand now that their must be a hole in the engine block to accept one end of the pin and keep the tensioner backed of , to allow the new drive belt to be placed in. I have ordered up the parts and will give the job a go when the weather is better- DIY driveway work is horrible in the UK winter.
I have a 325i, do you reckon on cold start a sort of “whispy” sound coming from the belt , almost like a faint squeak could be due to the things you replaced in this video being worn?
@@GeorgeAusters wow ok thank u so much man because my axel boot ripped and grease oil got al over my serpintine belt and alternator on my bmw e90 n51 engine.. so I really wanted to clean it off with a nice foam on top then remove my air filter then try clean belt and alternator with degreaser sprays and purple power spray and some brushes. Man, you are truly brave. Water and degreaser with the alternator uncovered.

@@azmaymi9237 I guess someone thinks that the water will short circuit something? Personally, I doubt it, but ok.

So what is the reason for replacement? Your old belt looks to be in good condition. Were you experiencing noises or similar issues? Thanks.
preventative, belts age, stretch, crack and can snap or fly off, tensioners fail, idlers bearing go bad like an old skateboard!!
Yeah and that belt can destroy your engine when it flies off.
Very nice job, all done ☑️😎😎😎👍👍👍
Thank you brother!
Best to use compressed air to clean the dirt of the front of engine.
Perfect timing as I just spilled oil all over this belt when doing an oil change
